Based on that everyone was having no lag, I'm going to say this was due to the area host

Yeah, bad area host. This is another reason why players force an area host(and hope their internet is stable).
The first one being the bombs in M9 to destroy all golds, and lilipa with one chain reaction explosion.

The gauntlets lag to hell if the area host isn't good.
Nothing'll spawn for ages and time'll run out. It's dumb.
