I have a question.

After recently getting Nova (which I love) I thought about getting PSO2. Now just looked on play-Asia.com, and there is now Episode 4. Do I need to purchase episodes 1 through 3, or can I just get ep4 and go from there?

you get access to all episodes no matter whether you buy a physical edition or don't buy any at all and play f2p

It's all one game, I think the boxed copies just come with different item codes.

I may get all of them, for collection purposes. But the item codes, do you use them in game or PSN codes?

There's an option on the Visiphone to redeem codes in.

I don't think you need to pay anything to play this game at all. Vita, pc, and ps4 all have the option to download the game for free. Of course, for vita and ps4 you'd need a jp psn account to download it for free, but that's not much of a hurdle.

The boxed copies just come with item codes and sometimes a 30 day premium ticket.
