View Full Version : Could anyone give me some advice on making a cool looking male with red/ginger hair?

Something about PSO2's character-creation system is just super overwhelming to me. There are just too many options, and I feel like my character always looks just a little bit... "off".

I'd like to make a Deuman (shame Beasts didn't make it over), but I prefer keeping the horn covered-up (I know you can basically shrink it and point it upwards, to the point it's basically, if not literally invisible.

As far as eye-color, I typically prefer blue eyes. That can range anywhere from steel-blue, to cyan. I'm not a big fan of differently-colored eyes, but then, maybe I'm just not creative enough with colors; totally open to ideas! Just nothing, like, SUPER generic, link pink or red.

Anyways, the biggest problem I always have is with proportions. I like characters who are a little bit muscular, but not so much that they look "weird" or anything when wearing different types of clothing. I generally stay clean-shaved with characters, but it's super hard to make them look "cool". I've always thought Crono from Chrono Trigger looked awesome, but can never figure out how to make a character look anything even remotely like that.

Probably a big task to lay on someone else, but I'd appreciate any tips for making a cooler-looking character!

While I don't know a damn thing about this anime, I've seen image of him enough to remember him (oh and his name)
Do Grell from... whatever anime he's from:

Lucky you OP, as I happen to be an expert on the matter! /bricked

Anyway, first thing right of the bat would be hair color. While you specifically stated you wanted a red-haired male, there are many different shades of red you can go with and some of them still qualify as 'red' even though their actual color is actually closer to orange or a really dark brown

Samples of this:

A tip in picking hair colors (not just red, but any other haircolor aswell) is not to use 'pure' colors or those with max saturation and/or have no tints/shades. It looks very unnatural and often makes hair look like a wig ^^;

While the second picture actually looks passable, take note that the salon lighting only makes it that way. When playing the actual game, there are certain lighting angles that make the haircolor look too glaringly bright to the point of being obnoxious

Samples of lighting affecting haircolor:

As for body proportions, I find that the defaults Sega has in their default stock characters are too pudgy (see below) that you really do have to adjust body width and arm width to make them look normal in any clothing.

For face proportions, I find that having the eyes upturned at the tips generally looks more 'cool' according to my friends. Eyebrows and eyelashes also helps in giving shape to the eye area.

I could give some other tips but this is it for now (or, what I could think of for now)

Awesome, thanks for the tips! Yeah, getting the right shade of "red" is hard, as I want it to be red, but also more natural-looking (like you said, most red hair is closer to orange or brown, hard finding a happy-medium). Also glad you mentioned lighting-effects, because that's definitely caused problems for me in the past, as well.

In fact, I also had a problem with skin-color. I have a tendency to make my guys either way too pale, or super tan, "burnt" even. So hard >_<

As far as proportions, I normally veer more towards muscular guys, but worried he might look "pudgy", as you say, when wearing most armor.

I wrote a post then realized halfway that your preferred race was deuman oTL
Deuman skin color can be tricky, since while human and newman counterparts have yellow and peach as skintone biases (AKA the natural skintone range you usually see on people), deumans have red and blue; hence it's harder to get a more natural looking skintone on deumans.

If you want a medium-range deuman skintone color, I find that the ranges in the encircled area below are closest to natural skintones without looking too pale or too dark

If you really want a really broad, muscular character (Berserk manga level-esque) without being pudgy, a tip I could give is tilt the sliders so that the torso has this 'inverted triangle' look (see below) in the sliders and adjust waist sliders accordingly so that you dont end up with this really thin waist while having broad shoulders.
