View Full Version : Some newbie questions~

Harro! :3

So, I've recently (finally) accepted that PSO2 is probably never releasing in the west and have started playing on the JP servers. (Actually tried to start a couple of years ago, but couldn't even get an account created) I was hugely addicted to the original PSO (GC version) and so I was really hoping they would follow it up here, but...eh, really doesn't look like it now. q.q

Anywho, had better luck this time and have been playing for a few weeks, and really enjoying it so far. I have a few questions though, and seem to be finding more all the time - so I thought I'd just make my own thread. So yeah, here they come;

1. Weak rare weapons?
I see already that rare weapons seem to drop alot more frequently than in the original PSO...but the majority seem really weak. Like, literally half the damage of standard weapons of the same type found in the same areas and same difficulty. What's up with this? Have they just become obsolete over time, or am I missing something?
Also, are there any drop charts similar to those of the original PSO, with drop rates and such?

EDIT: Seems people aren't understanding this question; I'm not asking what rare weapons are, which I should be using or why - I'm asking why, *for example*, an 8 star Photon Launcher is so much weaker than a 5 or 6 star standard launcher. There are a whole bunch of rare weapons like this that I have found, and it doesn't make any sense to me.

Answer: Some weapons have different advantages such as class availability, also OT & NT weapons scale differently when grinding. But it's true some are indeed just obsolete now.

2. Gathering~
I like the new gathering element to the game, but still unsure of some things. Is it worth gathering in certain maps more than others? Are all found materials worth keeping? And also, Yerkes' quests in Franka's Cafe are very tempting - are any of those worth doing or should I just save everything?

Answer: Basically farm the places for rings that i'm using, and do Yerkes's COs. (I didn't realize you could only do them once a week)

3. Costumes & Layering wear
LOVE the much deeper customization in PSO2. Though, I've noticed I can't really mix standard costumes with layered parts. Is there any way to show layer wear WITH a costume, or will the costume just always hide them?

Answer: Costumes and Layer Wear can't be mixed. Kinda sucks q.q

4. Star Gems & FUN Points?
I'm wondering what the best thing to do with each of these is. I notice SG in particular is fairly hard to come by, so I'm afraid to spend it on anything :x

Answer: Just use FUN for the FUN Scratch, and save SG for 2 collection file slots then use for SG Scratch and EQ Trigger.

5. Scratch Cards~
If I'm understanding correctly, the prizes for scratch cards rotate every so often. Is there anywhere I can check to see exactly what's available at a given time, and how often do each of them rotate?

Answer: Can see the prizes in-game (derp x.x) and they rotate every 2 weeks.

6. Translation~
I deeply appreciate the work that has been done translating the game <3 However, there are many things that are still unreadable to me x.x As much as I'd love to be able to read and speak Japanese, it's hardly a short-term solution. So, are there any tools out there that are quick and easy to use for rough translation? I imagine there's surely something for text that can be copy/pasted, but what about the text that cannot be? Such as item descriptions?

Answer: Not much choice other than learning Japanese for things that can't be pasted into google translate.

Whew..sorry for wall 'o' text, but I think that's it (for now) x.x
Any tips at all are greatly appreciated, not expecting every question answered by everyone! :P

About the Rare Weapons, yes, like the other games we have the Rarity of Weapons and/or Units. Better the Rarity, better the ATK and Potential (Special Ability of Weapons, unlocked when you get the +10 Grind Level).

The Gathering is a little bit broken because you only use this to craft rings, food and clear some quests (like get 600k every week)

Costumes and Layered are the "Most Valuable Item" in the Market, but they are diferent types of Clothes. Costumes are a 1 Set Only and the Layered are just 3 Sets (Outer Wear,Base Wear and Inner Wear, but you will only buy Ou and Ba)

StarGems are the "Arks Cash for freemium", you recive then using a Costume/Ou Layered for a certain time (10SG), clearing Bonus Quest (10SG for Silver and 20SG for Gold) or buying in the Casino and PVP Shop, but you can recive in a Login Bonus too

Scratch Prizes can me checked in "Prize List" option, but you can Check Bumped and go to AC Diretory

Now about the Translation, just the Necessary Things are translated, some items description, quests description, and some character dialogues in Story/Lobby.

Ohh and what ship is you playing?

1. 13* weapons are easier to come by now a days, work toward those and the ever so Mythical (for now) 14* weapon drops. grab a decent 12* weapon if you need gear until you get a 13* from Collection Files (I would avoid most Nox series weps varying on what class your playing)

2. Gather where you feel need be, especially if your working on Rings or certain Food Consumables. Do Yerkes Weekly CO's, extra pocket change. Keep Area Rocks, Gems, Special Area Drops (like forest Mushrooms)

3. Standard outfits will never be showned with Layered since theyre bother different types of clothing.

4. Realistically it's not and very easy to get, Spend it on either the Current SG scratch or buy EQ Triggers to use with your team or friends

5. Can literally check in-game for whats on the List and the Bonus items as well, every 2 weeks.

6. Google has some tool I think that auto translates in real time, friend used to use it, I dont know the name or whether or not it still works. Otherwise use the Eng Patch

The first thing I recommend doing with Star Gems is saving them up to get the two extra collection file slots. After that, do what Kril said.

There's a scratch catalogue on the official site, it includes all of the current AC, SG, and FUN scratches. http://pso2.jp/players/catalog/scratch/

1. If you need a strong weapon, just get Collection Files. You can currently farm 13* Evleda weapons fairly easily even at early levels by running Buster Quests. Until you can equip those you can buy 10-12* stuff from player shops. 10-12* weapons can be recycled in Recycle Shop (10-11* for Excubes and 12* for Lambda Grinders), so don't sell those to NPC shops.

2. As it was said before, you gather in the places that have mats for skill rings you need. Remember to do it right: make sure you have full stamina (it refills to 100 in 5 hours), fish until you get fever, then mine.

3. One-piece and layered clothing are completely separate.

4. FUN is used for FUN Scratch, where you can win My Shop passes so you could sell things. Keep those until you actually have something valuable to sell (when you expect, maybe, 10m worth of profit at least).

6. Make sure you are using the right patches. Make sure to turn on plugins and use RAISER instead of standard patches that replace game files.

Can confirm, killing Lv75 mobs with Lv40 charater is super easy with the HP +5 to 20%
and Attack power +5 to 30% boost.

Ohh and what ship is you playing?

First of all, thanks everyone for the replies :3 I'm playing on Ship 2.

Answers so far that are in the right ballpark;

1. None. Seems people aren't understanding this question; I'm not asking what rare weapons are, which I should be using or why - I'm asking why, *for example*, an 8 star Photon Launcher is so much weaker than a 5 or 6 star standard launcher. 6. Not really any definitive answers here either. I'm using the PSO2 tweaker english patches already, but there are still some items and such that aren't translated. I've tried using the Telepipe thing, but it was giving me login problems.

Also no word of any drop charts / drop rates. There's a lot of reasons for this, but the main one would be that rarity =/= power. What you should actually be looking at when comparing weapons is their stat requirement. Higher rarity weapons usually have more atk when fully grinded than their lower rarity counter parts of similar stat requirements.

Another thing to keep in mind is that gind scaling varies for Old Type weapons based on rarity. With the exception of 13*s Higher rarity OT weapons would gain MUCH more atk at +10 than a lower rarity weapon with similar stats. On the other hand, all New Type weapons gain 1% atk per grind level (A max of +35% atk at +35, when compared to OT 12*s getting +100% atk at +10) regardless of rarity, which means low rarity NT weapons are going to have surprisingly high base stats compared to their OT counterparts.

If you want drop charts you're gonna have to look at the Swiki. I don't think there's a full list in english anywhere http://pso2.swiki.jp/

4. Just use FUN for the FUN Scratch, and save SG for 2 collection file slots then use for SG Scratch and EQ Trigger.
You can also buy 125% tri boosters. Not a huge priority, but something to keep an eye out for in the treasure shop.

1. You can see what drops what on the swiki (https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjZqcG6-v_VAhURz2MKHcT0AzwQFggoMAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fpso2.swiki.jp%2F&usg=AFQjCNHwEBasL4qBK7Bj5vkx0Qt6QARYdA).
A lot of older "rare" weapons have become obsolete over time just due to power creep and the introduction of NT weapons, but in general low tier 7*+ weapons have several benefits over 1-6* weapons:

Have the possibility of being multi-class
May have lower equip requirements
Have potentials (OT 1*-6* weapons had no potentials)/more useful potentials (NT 1*-6* are just boosts for JAs)
7*+ weapons (except Extended/Crafted, Red, Blue and Invade) have a set 90% damage variance bonus, so your minimum and maximum damage is closer than with 1*-6* weapons.

The 8* Photon Launcher in your example is one of those OT "rares" that isn't really that great due to the fact that NT 1-6* weapons exist; its potential is very situational as all it does is increase Crit rate, but only when using Fi's Brave Stance, and since it isn't a multi-class weapon, it doesn't benefit from Fi's Crit Strike (a main-class only skill) since crafting it would remove that 7*+ variance bonus.

1) Low level rare weapons with low stat requirements compared to a higher level common weapon with higher stats requirement - this what you asking about?

6) I do not use the Tweaker myself but PSO2 is a JP game with no "official" English version that is up to date. (sure there was SEA version, but that was years behind in terms of patches) The game itself is like 50GB on my PC and people are already digging in the codes and trainslating it for FREE - if you want more to be translated perhaps help hire a translator/coder and get in contact with arks-layer. Not to mention the tweaker itself and other translating tools are most likely against the ToS, SEGA is just choosing not to enforce it.

PS: 4) There is also a FUN point shop where you can buy some consumables, lobby actions, things to do with your "My Room"

Use the Google Translate app for your Android phone and the camera translation method. Snap a picture of your screen and highlight the text as it asks you to do. Keep in mind that the text must be clear, and that sometimes it won't detect the characters on-screen properly. Should be self-explanatory.

If that fails, then your only option is to learn Japanese up to around N2 level which takes about half a year via a full-time course.

About weak rare weapons: did you fully grind and affix yet? This is impossible for a *5-6 star weps to outpower *8 ones.

Its common for the NT versions to overpower OT versions of higher rarity.
Thats probably what OP is seeing.

On top of what everyone else told you already, you had the right idea, they're obsolete. There's something you need to understand about the way Sega did things with PSO2, and that is that to keep the game relevant and interesting, they focused on regularly making content that feels "new". That goes for game modes, weapons, gathering, various currencies(a load of these as a matter of fact), etc. What they didn't focus on however, is balancing the old stuff so that everything fits together, and as a result, there's a lot of essentially irrelevant content in PSO2 nowadays. It's not necessarily uninteresting to experience (if applicable), but it won't really help gearing up your character properly in any way.

The weapons you see are an example of that. Yes, a lot of them are essentially worthless now, outside of mag feeding. That's just how it is.

Hope that answers your question.

There are a few reasons why higher rarity could be less powerful from what you see since you are new:
1. NT vs non NT
2. Different weapon type but has same attack type (you're comparing partisan to a sword, for example, they're both striking/melee type)
3. It has affixes that boosts the weapon's main atk power as displayed

1. Weak rare weapons?
The above 2 posters mostly answered but it could be exactly that: You are comparing -NT weapon type (new-type) with old type. Old type weapons generally have lower base damage but grinding them gives larger bonuses (+10 for old type far exceeds relative % boost of +35 of NT type). At the same time you have to consdier the potential of a weapon too.
This extends all the way up to 13*s. You will find 13* weapons that have lower base damage than lower rarity ones of the same weapon type.
Units (rear, arm, leg) do not have new-type equivalent, they are all considered old-type for grinding purposes.

2. Gathering~
Gathering/Fishing is worth depending on what you're after. For example, if you want to cook Karaage, the 5min food buff that increases RDR [rare drop rate] by 10%, you need to spend time in Tokyo and Vegas. Other interesting foods are Meat Stir Fry (if I remember the name correctly) which increases atk and the 50% hp one (stacks up to 5).
Yerkes COs are 600k meseta per week per character. But you also have to consider the random daily COs that may reward 100k meseta for 1 rare gathering/fishing material or the ones that give 350m/70xp for 1-999 common materials. This is again preference. If you make 30m meseta per week from other sources, then you're probably not gaining much from focusing on gathering/fishing. The main problem with gathering/fishing is the storage space (from a f2p point of view).
And of course get what you need for rings you intend to use.

4. Star Gems & FUN Points?
Again personal preference. FUN has not much wide usage outside of FUN scratch and room items/lobby actions. Plus it is very easy to come by once you start doing lvl70+ content. You can convert 10*s and 11*s to Excubes, which can then be converted to FUN (it can also be converted to other stuff, and I believe the majority of players would advise against going for FUN through excubes). SG is more limited and it again should be used as you like. There is no correct way to use it.

6. Translation~
Unfortunately I don't think there is an automated tool for translation of everything. If there was we would all be using it. There is an addon which allowed to translate chat from japanese to english and back I think.
