This new mobile platform game seems... too close to Final Fantasy Tactics stuff.
a) An armor model resembling the Judges in Square's Ivalice setting
b) The celestial north hemisphere in the background, which includes the 12 zodiacs at the edge. The zodiac signs play a significant meta-role in the Ivalice setting.
c) Since the celestial sky is both solar-system dependent (the apparent location of the stars changes when you change your own location in the universe) and time dependent (the night sky changes with the passage of years due to movements of the stars), and assuming that the writers/designers at Sega didn't forget to do their homework, this betrays that it will take place in our own solar system "close" to our time (give or take a few tens of millenia)

The arks find Kobol's the photoner tomb of athena, where lies a star map to the thirteenth Colony ARKS Ship, the very first one and the origin of all photoner civilization. Meanwhile Commander Adama Xierra decides to hide the truth, so all people in Oracle have something to do and not get bored.

New game hype! I also have no idea who this is. For anyone curious, I've been uploading the images as they appear (3 of them to my knowledge + star constellation background). These images are huge so have a spoiler box.

The problematic part of these sketches is... that they're sketchy so details are hard to parse. I clipped out interesting bits from the images that may be clues to this (potentially new) character.

http://www.pso-world.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=41691&d=1532269359

She wears very detailed cuffs and her left hand appears to maybe also be gloved? The details match the detail on the helmet. There's also this locket medallion around her neck with some kind of flower or scepter. Her body is mostly hidden beneath a cloak but we do notice that she is wearing some kind of armor underneath it.

The detail on the collar at least at a glance seems to match Alis Landale's armor.
http://www.pso-world.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=41697&d=1532272193

The one other person that has a precedent for cloaked armor is Lutz as you can see in his Gen1 art.
http://www.pso-world.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=41696&d=1532272160

Could be Alis. Could be Lutz doing ambiguous Lutz things. Could be an esper, some nameless descendant, or maybe even someone we don't even know. Alis and Lutz did get lost in space for a time between PS1 and PS2. However it's doubtful that it could be any of the mentioned characters because the constellations are from our solar system, so I'm leaning more toward PSO2 spinoff that's in JRPG form. Maybe it's a look into the backstories of Omega characters, but Sega could very well be throwing us for a loop!

If you're thinking what I think you're thinking, then we will probably also have to deal with time travel since there is almost a 500 year gap between PSI and Noah arriving in Algol.

zandra117
Jul 22, 2018, 12:50 PM
there is also at least a 1000 year gap in between the end of phantasy star 2 where Rolf and party encounters the earthmen and phantasy star 4 where the mothballed ship Landeel is reactivated.
Its possible that Rolf's encounter on Noah may have started a larger war with the earthmen in Algol. There is definitely potential for a new game within this gap. Even Alis could appear since we know that she uses cryosleep technology in Phantasy Star Gaiden similar to Lutz and had left to return to Algo.

If you're thinking what I think you're thinking, then we will probably also have to deal with time travel since there is almost a 500 year gap between PSI and Noah arriving in Algol.
We know Eusis/Rolf is the descendant of Alisa, but we don't know how much she lived, Lutz lived more than a thousand years thanks to cryostasis, Alisa also lived in a different planet outside of Algol (PS Gaiden).

Anduril
Jul 22, 2018, 02:44 PM
I completely forgot about Gaiden, to be honest. Taking it into consideration, that does reduce the gap for Alis to less than 100 years between her known adventures and Noah arriving. Easily enough time for her to travel back to Algol and get wrapped up in the Earthmen conspiracy. Alternatively, it could also be the story of one of Alis' descendants/Rolf's ancestors that survived the purge of the royal family, which could explain the necessity of a helmet to conceal her identity lest she face a French Revolution scenario.

zandra117
Jul 22, 2018, 04:16 PM
If Alis had continued to use the cryo pod after returning to Algo she might even directly be Rolf's mother.
Alis' "daughter" Minima from gaiden is also her clone which opens the possibility of a body double plot where the earthmen may have thought that they had killed her.

With the current market Sega has been crafting the PS series to cater to in recent years, I'm not feeling too excited about this. However, if this project is truly meant to celebrate the series as a whole and it's origins, I truly hope it's going to fit into the classic series and not be overflowing with, er, "fanservice."

However, the fact that it's on ios/android does not tend to leave a good first impression on gamers.

Looking at its countdown code, it seems like it adjusts to your local computer time. Which is kinda weird though why would they do that if it's not a global release.

I would assume that precisely because it is not a global release that they would do it like that since their target audience (ie. Japanese players) would all have the same local time.

So the story seems to be another "Dark Falz must be sealed." The style of the game reminds me of Fate/Grand Order, which I enjoyed the gameplay and story of, not so much the Hero summoning/gacha mechanic which I imagine will also be part of this game (and it looks like it may be characters from across the franchise that you can collect, judging by that Quna artwork at the end).

Our main protagonists are Stella and Yuri. Stella is the owner of the organization they're both part of, 白羊騎士団. Very weird name. Shirohitsuji Knights/Order of White Sheep. Not much is said of her beyond she's a shy, sweet girl. Yuri was raised as a sailor with the man that took him in when he was orphaned at a young age. He become the commander of their organization when Stella recruits him.

because when anything PSO2 related gets announced (including the monthly streams), people who still refuse to use the English Patch to play will continue to keep asking for a game that they'll literally get to play tops 4yrs or less before the next installment hits and they'll keep doing it even if they got the PSU treatment again. pathetic

theres no way you think this is a bunch of English players thumbing down the video, not only is it basically a meme at this point for almost every PS vid to have a thumbs down side higher but this isn't exactly what people even want: another mobile game when they need to focus more on the current main games issues. oh but dont worry, we're gonna have this shoved down our throats and eventually somehow ties in to Ep6 or Ep7. (im also under the assumption they have a seperate team working on this as a 2nd guess but i have my doubts)

I honestly don't see what's so offensive about it besides the motion tweens and autotune. That scene where she wacks a sandworm just got me all nostalgic for IV. Optimistic Stockholm Syndrome?

From what I've read, it's definitely still a lucrative business and the Switch version has loads of downloads but not as much activity as those downloads would suggest. Haven't looked too much into the nuances of the Hero class and the newest episodes but I'll take your word for it.

Reading more about this game got me hype for deep lore, but the cash grab will most definitely be intense. They're already throwing out bucket loads of currency gems for preregistration. Love the prospect of a new RPG! Hate the greediness of their business models. Sure would be nice if our fandom could get a Christian Whitehead dev.

the Switch was a good idea but realistically i thought Cloud wasnt the way to go and Cartridge would have been better but i still have the idea that this is them testing the waters and seeing what their team can do seeing as theyre still going to improve on it instead of giving up or w/e. the game itself isnt dead by any means again, JP hours or Eng, Blocks still fine either a bunch or at least a couple full for EQ's (as usual)

100SG's is not a lot, easily spent on one SG scratch turn or used for monthly SG storage. even if the game turns Gacha (which i dont doubt by any means but I like to give that benefitted doubt), as other games, you DONT have to invest money into it unless you want to which is the players choice to be smart or just irresponsible (its your money so do w/e) with their money so they can complain about spending $1,000 or more and then whining about rates etc but idk cant say until its in full swing unless its like $9.99 for the game and it doesnt have a Gacha

Even if they threw in UwbaaaKireek and SEED infected Lou on the gacha, I still don't see the "phantasy" on the main cast. Looks like some random mobile game they put a known name to grab extra interest. There is a mag-like thing floating behind one of the characters, so it is possible that they just haven't shown the full extent of what technology is there and/or discovering it will be a plot point.

And yeah I honestly don't know what Sega expects us to do. It was clear from the moment the website was online for the countdown that it's gonna be a money making machine and not a celebration of 30 years Phantasy Star. I'm pretty sure the tiny content update in PSO2 at the end of the year will be a better celebration of the Franchise than this is. That's besides that I couldn't tell this game was supposed to be a Phantasy Star game until someone mumbled the words "Dark Falz". I assume, most people who downloaded it are active PC/PS4 players, and they did it only so they could get that Link costume. It also didn't help that the launch was plagued with connectivity issues (yes, for JP players) and that servers have constantly been full so players had been put in a queue. Oh, and also 30 FPS (but it seems like they're going to address that).

He become the commander of their organization when Stella recruits him.

Someone mentioned this on Twitter and I agree that the artwork has newer Shining vibes to it. I like it; it's pretty.

The way Sakai was explaining it funny that you mention that is because they think it has to do with creating a Sega ID. So he mentioned that they may look into ways you could play without one. I remember the hassle of creating one for sure but I'm not sure that's what's entirely to blame for the Switch's funk. If I was still playing, I agree that downloading on the switch just for the costume would be a thing I'd also prolly do heh heh.

The chronological mirage was such a tease in the beginning, and I got my hopes up that it would be a mobile experience I’d be on board with. There’s nearly nothing here celebrating Phantasy Star’s legacy besides the enemies. The characters look as though they were taken directly from another scrapped anime, and look generic. I don’t understand why Sega’s management has been so incompetent, it’s clear they know how to chase profit margins while ignoring what previously made their brand successful.

Perhaps the reason is because Sega lacks faith that there is an actual audience. They've deprived western fans of so much content in all the online titles. It could be some negligence on the team's side with the content that often lagged behind the JP version or outright didn't even include in PSO and PSU that bringing over PSO2 just didn't seem profitable in the long term. They could look at gaijin ship 2 and see how many people have played despite the hurdles of the language barrier, but besides that hub, the rest are mostly relegated to a single ships and a small population spread out elsewhere.

Sega has been in a rut for awhile. Granted all businesses want to make money, but I think if they satisfy the fans and appriciate their customers, they could potentially profit more. As I said, this is a good time to be a Sonic fan. And I'm sure we all know about the dark age his series went thru. We need more people like Christian Whitehead that get their foot in the door doing simple ports and eventually work their way up to Mania status. He tugged at my feels from an interview he did recently following Plus' release in which he said his team often joked about the potential for toying with a Burning Rangers concept. After seeing what he had managed to accomplish, I could trust him with something like that. Their team needs to open the doors for new blood to bring in fresh ideas. Like, for real.

They should've either used the Shining IP for this. If they have such a hardon for medieval high fantasy perhaps make a Shining mobage and a Shining MMO instead of leaking it into PSO2 and creating this?

Alternatively make it a sci-fi game about a solar system with 3 planets and have neon haired space elves in black leotards using claw weapons, a blue-haired mage guy and a heroine throwing laser boomerangs. That'd be a Phantasy Star.

I don't get the cheap looking sprites that look like stick puppets either. They have the Virtua Fighter franchise, they have a bunch of games using 3D engines, PSO2 included, which they know inside out and have character bones and animations all sorted. If they wanted a 2D look just recycle the engine, use cel shading but keep the animations so that they don't look cheap.

Star Ocean Anamnesis and Honkai Impact 3 were my expectations in comparison. They both have 2D illustrations and 3D models of the characters and real-time 3D combat. I expected too much.

Well hopefully this game works well and gives a better hope for PSO3.

the problem is in the interviews they said theyre going to get rid of the "Advanced Class" category and just have Hero and future classes bunched in as normal class so despite what it may be, this could be a teaser to a new future class but at the same time it's just wishful thinking. just saiyan man

to be fair, since this game screams of Grandblue Fantasy/ Fates Grand Order and how foolishly strong the gacha game is for those kinda things in the West (see any of the danger threads of "whaling for X unit for any of those games.") It'd be a foolish game to not let it cross over.

It's more about the Phantasy Star itself turned into "that" I think. Gacha itself is nothing new to us who play PSO2 anyway. Like, "I'm ready to burn my money, but why you do this Sega?"

It would have been passable for me if they at least made the battle perspective look like the classic series, and had the camera behind the party staring down the enemy. but as it is now, It's in no way a tribute to the series, just them trying to capitalize on other popular games.

basically kind of like how PSO1 was going to be an original IP as a sci-fi diablo clone; but Sakai just wouldn't stop drawing dragons, which reminded them they had a sci-fi/fantasy IP they could slap on for branding

....

suddenly that fake screenshot of "pso2 battle royale" doesn't seem that too far flung of an idea...

http://www.siliconera.com/2018/07/27/idola-phantasy-star-saga-director-and-producer-explains-why-the-game-has-a-different-setting/

so I was looking at the summary of this interview and I saw this line:

The gameplay consists of command-based battles where players defeat enemies and advance on the map. Tanaka states that they deliberately chose this to mirror the roots of the series.

They deliberately chose this to mirror the roots of the series.
That's just a slap in the face. They either have no idea what they are doing, or corporate was calling the shots about wanting a FGO clone and they're trying to save face and doing a horrible job at it.

I might not have played much of the old games, but I know enough that there was a strong focus on Combination Attacks to get stuff done, and that trailer just showed off a bunch of totally-not-Noble-Phantasms. also somebody pointed out the "auto battle" button, that would have been a perfect opportunity to implement the Macro system.

Chin and Tanaka want to make this game a title that won’t let down the players expectations or the legacy of the series.
The only people they are not letting down are the people who haven't played any other game in the series.

Also somebody pointed out the "auto battle" button, that would have been a perfect opportunity to implement the Macro system. Both Auto and Macro can exist at the same time. And let's be honest, the Auto option exists because quite a significant majority of players do not play the game, they just put it on Auto while they do other stuff. In fact, not having the Auto function would pretty much mean the game is DoA because it wouldn't be able to compete due to lack of accessibility. That's the sad reality for games today.
