Also, are there any tricks to finding rares, and how rare are they? I've played through the whole game on normal 4-5 times and havent seen a rare, is this normal?

yes It's very VERY difficult to find a rare in normal I haven't yet and I'm in ultimate. Mind you I don't play in normal. Try hard my first rare was in hard mines
