If I haven't read the manual right and missed this, please shot me. But what do the stars mean in the item screen, and what does 'Slot' mean. And I have Kight/Power and can't equip it, why is this. Why, why, why……… (get's smack round head from irate parent)

As for the Knight Power, try to get either an armor or Frame that has at least one unit slot (unless they changed things with the newer versions of PSO, there can be up to four, but one or two is most common if they have any at all). You would equip the unit the same way you equip anything else, but the slots for units do not appear unless you have an appropriate Armor or frame equiped at the time.
And yes, taking off the armor automatically de-equips any units as well.
As for the stars, that basicly lets you know how they rate in comparison to other weapons of that type. A weapon with bonusses or special abilities will likely have more stars than one that does not, and the next level of that weapon series will have more stars than lower levels of that series.
More stars also mean that you can sell them for more messetta. Do not expect to recoup your investment with any interest if you buy a weapon and pay for grinders to upgrade it with. Grinders are expensive, even if they do nice things to your weapon bonuses. If you are going to use them, make sure that it is with a weapon that you feel that you are going to use for a while. Like one with the afore mentioned special abilities or percentage damage increase vs type bonuses that you really like.
For example, I love my Railgun (handgun series), with the +10%, +20%, & +25% vs A. Beasts, Machines, and Dark respectively, so I have started investing in grinders for it. Which pretty much meant that I was forsaking my previous Lock Gun (also of the hand gun series, but of the preceding level) that had +15% vs both A. Beasts and Machines. A weapon that I had invested in and had improved to +14, so it was doing an additional 28 points of damage per shot.
Granted, I started out doing slieghtly less damage over all, but the growth potential is greater, and the next level of the handgun series will not become available to me for a while yet anyway...
I hope that you found this helpful.

I understand what you mean about the weapons. I've been trying to save any potentially good weapons this way, for the day I start finding a few grinders to boost them up. Now if I can just get through the caves...
