Heres a quick rundown of a couple of ways that you might be trying to connect your gamecube to your ADSL service.

Router
Gamecube BBA, conected to a socket on a Router with a RJ45 Patch lead, router conected to modem, or has modem built in, another RJ45(ethernet) lead is connected to the P.C ( or P.Cs) for your internet service, and you have a network set up

Direct
The gamecube BBA is conected to an ADSL modem with a RJ45 (ethernet) Lead, you have to unplug your P.Cs Ethernet lead to plug the gamecubes lead in.

ICS
You have a USB ADSL modem, and the gamecube BBA is conected to your P.C with a Crossover RJ45 (ethernet ) cable, with Internet conection sharing on your P.C

If you are using ICS as I am, just rename the Provider 4 and then choose the first option and leave everything blank but make sure it's on automatic. Everything should be done then and all you need to do is make sure you're connected to the net and then you should be able to play online. It really was that simple for me.

Have you ADSL broadband?

I use ADSL broadband, and i have a USB modem, that plugs into a USB socket on my p.c.
My Gamecube Broad Band Adaptor ( or X box) is conected to my P.C using a CROSSOVER ethernet cable.

On my P.C i have internet conection sharing enabled on the network card, that the CROSSOVER lead to the gamecube is conected to.

On my gamecube i have named my ISP ( not important)
and i selected USER ISP or (something like that)
in the network setting on the gamecube, everything i left at default, although you need to check that Automaticly detect IP is selected, the rest stays as it is, then just click next on everything until you get to the end of the set up.

once done, conect everything up, conect your P.C to the internet, then select HOMePAGE on the PSO title screen and it should xonnect to the PSO homepage.

one cable (Crossover) conects the Gamecube BBA to the P.Cs network card, as there is only one port for one cable.

Well, I just bought a new 5m crossover cable today for 4 pounds sterling from http://www.ebuyer.com but im not sure if they deliver to where you are. It's much cheaper to buy it online since in retail stores, it can cost like 3 times as much for just one cable.

If everythings conected right, and your P.C is switched on, you should get a message saying "local area conection conected" when you switch on your gamecube.

With internet conection sharing, the P.C should be online before you try and get the gamecube online

Well, I'm using a crossover since I'm plugging my GC BBA into a network card in my PC. However, if you have a router, you will need a patch cable. Some routers might accept both crossover and patch cables.

There are 2 network cables:

RJ45 Network Patch cable

RJ45 Network Crossover cable

Don't get the 2 mixed up.
