well i have the system tray icon (2 arrows) which i believe shows the status of the modem. WHen i hover the cursor over it. it says "BT voyager 100 ADSl modem: no signal" however once, it said "idle" which i assume means ready. but i think its stopping me connecting to the net on BB

Have you made sure that you have correctly connected the RJ11 cable from the USB modem to the phone socket? Since you mention that your status is idle, your USB cable should be ok. IMO, I think it's to do with the cable between your modem and phone socket. And please, DO NOT MISTAKEN A RJ45 CABLE (both straight or crossover) WITH A RJ11 CABLE. If you are using the one that came with the modem from BT, you should be ok.
You have installed the drivers correctly right? I know that this is stupid question, but has your line been activated yet by BT? It usually takes 5-7 days.

I'm willing to bet that your service isn't hooked up yet. Just because you have the modem, doesn't mean the phone company is sending the signal to your house yet.
Call them and see if it's active.

Most ADSL services in the UK have a 10 day activation period, and after the ten days is up, your ADSL modem should get a signla and sync with your local exchange.
thats 10 Working days if you read the small print somewhere about line activation
or two weeks overall.
go and take a look through the excellent http://www.adslguide.org.uk for more help and inforamtion on all things ADSL in the UK.

your line should be active around the 8th-9th of september, if you posted your message when you recieved the modem.
if your line is active, but you dont have your log in details, you can test it by logging on as the folowing
