ok there are some words that just deserve censoring, but wtf is up with censoring the following:

Took out offensive terms. JP is an abbreviation for Japanese, the other is a slang term used offensively.

This is dumb. We need to start getting more mature about words, they are only really offensive in a certain context and if we can be mature about it then they are no longer going to be offensive.

I know I can't say the 'N' word here either, but that word is a case in point. Black people themselves started to use this as an ironic word in their pop culture - notice how blacks are now practically the only people to use this word? I do understand why this one is censored, because it has in the past been a terrible slur - it's just not so much anymore and this has resulted from black people being defiant about it.

JP instead of the J word for Japanese too. Here in the UK, the three letter variation has never really been a bad word. Importers have used it on Japanese games as an abbreviation for country of origin, much like Brit. = British. Nobody ever seems to take offense.

I find it ironic that I can't say such words on this forum, but I can say for example, spic. That is an offensive word for a Spanish person. What I am saying here is a statement, so I am not using it in an offensive context, and I hardly think my boyfriend (whose family is Spanish) is going to be terribly offended by me making that statement.

The ones on PSO I don't understand are...

Gay, as in "My friend is gay." I can't say that word without putting a period in or after it. It's NOT an offensive word, unless you use it in an offensive context. I never use it in an offensive context, so it's annoying to have to think about it. Not only is this not an offensive word, it's the word of choice used by homosexuals TO DESCRIBE THEMSELVES. Its a word they chose, that they are happy with.
Just because 5 year olds have made it a 'bad' word, does not mean it should be removed from a videogame where adults are playing. And how many gay PSO players do you know? I know 2, and they are not allowed to use this word without altering it. That's stupid. And if people start becoming paranoid about the word 'gay', so that the only people using it are those who intend it as an insult, it's going to become PREDOMINATELY an insult. Is that what we want?

Well, you have to remember some people are over-sensitive to these words. I laugh off racism, it's that pathetic, it really isn't worth my time anymore. I had to deal with it growing up in school, and I've realised that it was absolutely pointless of me to get all aggrevated over it.

yet again peoples fears of words has been the main culprit here. many words, these days, that are reguarded as offensive really have lost all meaning. they are so common in the world that no one cares anymore. if someone insults me i just wave it off, if im with friends and we insult each other its just a joke and friendly banter, theres no real offence intended.
as shimarisu pointed out most words arnt offensive on their own they need to be in the right context to be offensive, but how do u teach a computer context, MS Word has eough problems as it is so i seriously doubt ST, or anyone for that matter, could make a fully functional communication system for pso that could take into account context and any other problems our languages could throw at it, the fact is its just never going to happen.

From my understanding, offensive slang terms aren't to be posted, whether you mean them in an offensive way or not.

"Jew" isn't offensive, because it's a people. The instances when someone might use it offensively(much like how Cartman uses it offensively on South Park) is very far and few between, and if we editted "Jew" out of everything, that seems abit ignorant, right? Then it would be like we were censoring those people and not the word.

Maybe I'm looking at it wrong with how I'm editting it out, based on who might be offended and the context in which I know people mis-use the word. If I am, I'll change my outlook, if not, oh well. I'm just editting it the way I see it.

And when enough people grow up with how they (mis)use these words, then the forum rules will be more laxed when it comes to them.

"Jap" is an offensive slang, used more often than not. Thus, it is not allowed. If we editted "Jew" each and every time, we'd be getting harassed for somehow being against Judaism.

I'm not offended by very much at all, but there are roughly 23,000 other users, and more often than not, some of them are the ones being offended. Not negotiable, the rules have been in effect for quite a while and thats how it is.
