Communism doesn't seem like a bad idea at first glance, but when you consider that in most cases of its use everyone gets equal amounts of everything despite unequal amounts of work, it doesn't seem that great. Not to mention that having the state own your posessions would sort of suck.

The pilgrims were originally using a sort of communist system, but they were unhappy until they switched to one where you got what you worked for.
