View Full Version : Fanfic Feedback

The next chapter (14) of Before Twilight is going to
be pretty long, in order for me to catch up in chapters
(the plan was for the dragon fight to end on Chapter 12)

Anyways, I'm not begging for recognition or anything
like that, I would just like to have some feedback
on how the fanfic is doing. Frankly, there aren't
many reponses on the fanfic thread itself, and
that's fine.

I am mostly posting this in a seperate thread
because I believe that if I posted such a request
within the fanfic thread many people would not see
it if they decide the chapters are too long.

Since the length of Chapter 14 will no doubt take
more time than usual, I figured I would also take this
time to figure what you think of the fic, or if you
decided not to read it, why? Again I say I am not
pressuring you to read it and give recognition,
I'm in it for the writing. What I want is some ways
to make the fic more appealing to readers who may
not find the format to their liking.

I am well aware that in the end it is my choice, and
that I should write in a way most comfortable to me.
I am also aware that there may be those who read and
not post, and I am fine with that.

Maybe I just type too much http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

I just thought of another question.
At the approximate lengths of chapters, meaning
if I keep the same pace, the total fic will end up
being 3 "books", each one 35 chapters long.

In your opinion, which would you prefer?
Should I keep the current length chapters about the
same (which, on this forum, seem to be quite large in
comparasion, sorry about that)...

...OR...

Should I have the same amount of material, and break
each chapter into 3 different posts, making about
105 posts per "book"? That would be a lot of posts...
415 approximately... however it may make it easier
to read for those who prefer smaller chunks.

So, which should it be?

Larger chunks and less of them?
OR
Smaller chunks and more of them?

ok, i admit to not having read the fanfic in question, but you do deserve a round of applause for the amount of effort you put into your art.

im my opinion (which may not be worth much) it is better to do smaller posts more frequently. Surveys suggest web surfers tend not spend too much time on a page... shorter chapters mean they could read it and then have a reason to return (real soon http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif)

....BUT its only my opinion

PS I didn't vote on the poll so as not to skew the results.

I have read your fic and am enjoying what you have so far. I also say it's probably better to break it up into smaller chunks. A lot of people get turned off when they see a lot of text.

It seems true that shorter chapters usually fare better.
Would you recommend waiting until the next work to break
it into smaller chapters, or reposting the current
work into smaller pieces?

If I repost I can add chapter breaks at the places
where I have current sub breaks (the lines of ==== )
and then just make new names for the chapters
that end up created in the process. It would have all
the same text, but broken up more so readers can
have a more defined pause if they wish to stop for
a while.

What do you think?

EDIT- Also, the format I post the chapters in might
add to the idea that the chapters seem to long.
However, I would prefer breaking the chapters up
rather than change the formatting style...

i advise you to do it for your next work. when i'm calculating chapter length i format the chapter to that length. if you just chop up the story you have now without reformatting, it might spoil the flow.

Well if I did break it into more chapters, I would
break them at points where there were already breaks
within the chapters. I agree though that breaking
otherwise would destroy the flow.
