Parents do the things they do for a reason?
Oh good, so someday I'll understand why my mother used to beat me over the head(closed fists) and call me a worthless failure and a whore and other such niceties for such things as the cats urinating over the side of the litterpan, and earlier just randomly stormed over out of nowhere and screamed at me about running a virus scan on the computer for no apparent reason at all, and told me to get off it since I'd been on it all day despite the fact that I'd only been on it an hour.

Righto.

By the way, I'm 20, when the holy hell am I supposed to understand this? When I'm 80? When I die?

I've never been grounded. Mother would never take me anywhere, so I've spent my entire life sitting in my room doing a whole lot of nothing anyways(Can't drive yet. Afraid. Mother gets violent in the car, and I see two dimensionally. Recipe for disaster.)

Not as easy as just moving out.. Even harder when he/she can't drive.. As for being grounded for 3 weeks for gameboy advance.. That sucks.. I stopped getting grounded.. Now they just come in my room and start looting stuff.. No words spoken.. You made a bad grade on the science test? ::Goes in my room and takes the tv out.:: You didn't pick up the phone when I called? ::Takes the xbox or phone:: Continues on like that until I have nothing left but clothes and my bed.. Unless they are really pissed.. Then they take pillows too.. Don't believe me ask Stardragon159..

My two brothers were both geniuses though...one lives in Mexico imprisoned for fighting in the Zapatista movement and the other runs a business in Detroit...and I live on the computer.

lets not be making fun of weasels...

my parents didn't ground me... they realized that it wasn't an effective tool. on the other hand, removing luxuries such as a GB or other such video game systems, tvs, and such, that was easy for them... now that i look back, i think it is rather silly how i begged to get them back. i can see why parents do certain things (outside of the abuse iankun spoke of), but parents do make mistakes... i don't think there is a parent alive that hasn't said "i'm going to make changes so i am not the same kind of parent my own parents were"... and i'm sure you are saying the same thing. you can have spoiled brats if you want to.

And this, folks, is why I never bothered to tell anyone when I was younger about what went on.
And I highly doubt she'd want me to be a boxer, she's always whining that I'm not feminine enough. And then I sit there and think to myself, "Gee, I wonder why".

Parents aren't so bad, even when they make mistakes. Generally it's just that they want the best for you and aren't always correct in how they implement that. Just like us, they do silly things.

Heck, I used to get grounded every Sunday morning because I'd walk my friend home. Granted, I didn't tell my mother where I was going, but after the sixth time you'd think she'd learn...

My biggest beef with parental punishment is that they always punish one child more than another. When my sister and I were little, I always got grounded and she never did. Right annoying, that.

To Ian: I know this won't help you any, but I'm sorry to hear about how your mother treated you. Unfortunately, there are some bad parents out there and there is no excuse for how they treat their children. It's just nice knowing you didn't turn out like her. Besides, what's wrong with "not being feminine?"

To Servbot: You're fourteen and studying Silvia Plath? You poor soul...her writing is incredibly depressive and deals a lot in symbolism and imagery. I never even looked at Plath until I was sixteen or so. A couple of girls in my AP English class did a project on her back in high-school. It was an...interesting...presentation, to say the least.

Fun tidbit, though. Did you know she killed herself? Ah, learn something new everyday.

My dirtbag, drugbag, unemployed older brother who moved in with me always does that shit with my Xbox games. Any game left out, or left in my Xbox, I delete his saves for. If he puts his games away, but does not put my game back in, I delete his saves. If he does not put my video game chair back where I like to sit, I delete his saves. If he leaves any food trash in my room like empty soda cans (which i pay for) I delete his saves.
I can't try to kill him because he could rip me limb from limb if he wanted to.
It just really pisses me off to come home after working sometimes 16 hours to find all my stuff messed with by someone who hasn't worked since February.

Believe me, I had a younger, dirtbag, drugbag, younger brother (I'm 30, remember?) that lived off of my mom (RIP) after my dad's death until she died... and he wrapped himself around a tree.

Beleieve me, it's true what one says; "You never know what you've got 'till it's gone".

My family may have never amounted to much (abusive, neglectful, hateful, spiteful, hurtful, lot), but they were all I had.

And they're gone.

Friends and the internet help to fill the void a bit, but having no living relatives can be a real drag a lot of the time.

Take it from one who knows.

I got a "b" on my interm report (three weeks into school) my mom flipped, and told me to go to guidance ( http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_lol.gif ). when she saw me on the computer, she told me to get off, when she saw me watching TV she told me to do homework (I had none). I merely shrugged my shoulders, and started reading. Later, she screamed that i spent too much time reading, and not enough studying. I laughed in her face.
Now i hang this moment over her head.

her -why are you on that damn computer again?

Same here. I think its due to the fact that they arent that older than me. When parents are overly strict I normally find its due to the difference in age. Grounding is the stupidest punishment ever. It doesnt work and you get a hatred for your parents. All you need is for someone to inspire you into doing someting.

It's the whole punishment vs. reward vs. positive/negative reinforcement. Children respond differently to various disciplinary tactics, but generally all-out punishment (like grounding) just makes the child hate the parent.

Of course, we could also get into authoritarian parenting vs. authoritative parenting, but...*shrugs*

I don't know about that, the age difference between my parents and I is quite large, but they aren't over harsh or strict. I think the way parents operate comes from their own upbringing and from what kind of people they are, not their age.
