Yes, aside from a long list of improvements, you will also be able to keep your characters from version 1.

Actually, from what I know, the game disc itself means nothing. Your Serial number and access key may every well have nothing to do with your copy of the game at all.

The actual reason for these numbers are so that illegal copies of the games CANNOT be used to play on-line. These values varify to the servers that you rightfully own the game. They also link your DC and your characters together to keep people from duplicating their characters and giving them to friends (there might also be other security issues invloved).

Anyway, I'm not sure of this, but it might very well be possible to use the game disc of some one else on your system, and nothing would actually change (could bne risky to test this though).

I've also heard that some people who bought used copies of the game were able to call Sega and get a NEW serail number and access key. This might just be a rumor though.
