the HU in a hunter class name? I say "hyu"
the RA in a ranger class name? I say "Ray"
the FO in a force class name? I say "f-oh"

I pronounce pretty much everything in the game like it's latin... Thus HU="who", RA="rah", and FO="foh".

MUUTS DITS POTUM means nothing at all in latin.

Yup, same here, but i'd say Spanish not Latin, and MUUT DIS POUM or however, are the 3 planets of something in the series of phantasy star, Sinue knows a lot about it

Also there's a weapon that's HUnewearl only, and it's called Heart of Poum, or something like that, but it's exactly like the last word of the other weird words

I never said it was latin... Just that I pronounce it like it is. Gods, I've listened to too much music in foreign, latin-based languages. I say "Muut dis poumn" like "moot dees poh-oom" because I'm weird. *g*

spanish is a descendant of latin so pronounciations would be the same. If you really want to pronounce everything perfectly, pronounce it like in japanese:

A= "awe" as in "Ah"
I= "eee" like when you say "we"
U= "ooo" as in "soon"
E= "eh" as in "get"
O= "oh" as in "old

after all, the game was originally in japanese...

Stupid question here, but why does everyone pronounce it "Hyu" when the HU sound in "Hunter" isn't pronounced that way at all? (then again, I pronounce "ra" like the Egyptian god, Ra, not like it is pronounced in the word "Ranger") I go with JadeRiver on this one...I say it "Hoo" "Rah" and "Foh". I dunno..."Hyu" just sounds stupid to me.

EDIT: I just thought of a question about Japanese pronounciation - how does one pronounce "ou" (as in Poumn) Japanese style?

To answer LadyRedComet : because the japanese reads so.

Otherwise, most of the time I pronounce it the French way. Not a big help, heh ? http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

I have a question btw to you all English-speaking people :
--How do you pronounce the "y" in Ryuker ? like in "why" or like in "ready" ?

LadyRedComet

I didn't ask why, I asked how...meaning do you give it an "oh" sound or an "oo" sound or something else altogether?

And I say it "ree-oo-ker".

I took Japanese, and the answer is simple. The "U" after the "O" is an irregularity in Japanese. When "U" comes after "O", you treat it as another "O", making the "O" sound longer. So, instead of "Oh", it is now just a longer vowel sound "Oooh". Essentially, you're giving two syllables to the same vowel sound.

It's basically an extension of the "oh" sound.

MUUT DITTS POUMN...

I pronounce it "moot" (cross between woot and moo, rhymes with 'poot')
"ditz" (like a ditzy person)
"pome" (silent 'e' makes the long 'o'... rhymes with 'home')

I read it like it's written HUmar= "Jumar".
RAcast="Racast", and such, except for HUnewearl="Hanwerl" and FOnewearl="Fonwerl". For some reason, even unknown to me, I pronounce them like if they were written in English, tho I'm Spanish.

since its japanese origin...
HU like the "hah" in hunter.
RA like the "rey" in ranger.
FO like "foh" not quite like in force... but exceptions only prove a rule, dont they.

I don't quite understand where your pronunciations come from. To me, "hah" varies from the "huh" in hunter. Maybe a dialectical difference? Or I could just be misinterpreting. *shrugs* Linguistics are so absolutely fascinating.

I can answer that for Rena. The Japanese phonetics (romaji) for hunter is hanta-. hah-nnn-tah. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

However, I got to thinking that words based in latin should probably be pronounced as such. Hunter, for example, would have roots in a latin-based language and not Japanese. But I still tend to mispronounce things because I got into the habit long before I thought about it.

Hyoo
Rah
Foh

I'm funny that way. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif

*smacks forehead* Hi, I'm an idiot. I was completely thinking in the wrong phonetic group. *sigh* I tend to do that on occasion. Thank you for your help, though, VulpesMundi. I'll go sit in a corner and look vacant for a while.

Wow... I have been gone for a while... this topic is new.... anyways... I say...
HU = Hyu
RA = Rah
FO = Pho... like what someone said earlier as in phone...

Pronounce things as I see them... although sometimes people say I talk funny... eh... whatever...
