View Full Version : What the hell is so great about anime? >:/

As the topic says, what's so great and wonderful about it that almost everyone on the internet has some kind of anime SN, E-mail, or signature?

Why is it every-fucking-where? >:l

It's just another form of medium.
Animation.
It's like asking whats so great about music or film? (Maybe not as drastic as that) http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif
But I do see what you mean. There is an abundance of anime fans on the net (I for one, being one) and if your not a fan, I guess it can be a bit of a drag having it in your face all the time?

I have a rather long-standing distaste for anime. The general fixation on it got very old very quickly.

People! Guess what! If you're obsessed with anime, THIS DOESN'T MAKE YOU UNIQUE! It's not special, or even that interesting! So please, unless you're at an anime forum, tone it down a little!

It is just another medium, but people forget that it's essentially animation. A cartoon.

It disgusts me when people believe anime is better purely because it's made in Japan...

Funny how you made this topic, Uncle. Did something new happen, or have you just been holding out this hatred and frustration from PSOW for so long? I know you hate the stupid anime bandwagon hoppers as I do http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_eek.gif

I have to agree with Rotis on the Obsession part.
Unless you are at an anime based forum, please keep the anime obsessions to yourself. Hell, I'm an otaku, but I don't spread my 'anime-lovingness' all over the place. I keep it where it needs to be, that being to myself, thank you very much. It's great to love anime, it's something to do. But don't show off to everyone. That's all this world needs is a whole bunch of Anime Lovers going too far and trying to spread it all over the place!

The reason people are obsessed with anime is quite simple: It's a change. For most of your life, you have probably only seen cartoons made by Warner Bros. or Disney and after awhile, it gets pretty monotonous. Seeing anime is something new and something different and people like change. After awhile anime will become old news and people will move on the the next change.

But anime is so great. There is always some main charactor who is a famous gunslinger/swordsman who is good with the ladies and wins every battle he can have. Or there are tentecles and.....what this is a PG-13 forum.

Nah, nothing new happened to cause this, Uncle is just fucking tired of seeing anime being talked about ALL THE FUCKING TIME. My God! It can't really be THAT GREAT THAT YOU HAVE TO TALK ABOUT IT, MAKE IT IN YOUR SIGS, USE NAMES OF THE CHARACTERS AS SCREEN NAMES ASDNF ASDFSDNFNSADFNJKSDF!

Alrighty, I feel better now. I don't mind that people like it and watch it, it's just annoying when people talk about it 24/7.

I've enjoyed anime for so long because it spans so many genres. There's a series that suits every taste in anime. Not many mediums can say the same, really.

Hell, if we're complaining about anime, let's broaden our horizons. What's so great about porn and sex? It's everywhere and everyone's talking about it. There's nothing new about it, it's pretty much been the same for centuries. Ha! = P~

I was watching some cartoon movie festival on IFC some 3 years ago. The instant a certain Russian cartoon was on, I swear I couldn't get the subliminal thoughts out of my head for 2 weeks. It had that erratic style... -_-;;

i blame my older brother. i can remember watching lots of robotech in the early-mid '90s with him... ahh... that was only the beginning. i like anime for the artistic style. that, and REAL anime (anime has to come from japan, otherwise it is just a cartoon from another country, aka afganistanimation) can be a bit of a culture shock. i was watching gatchaman with my brother (a late 70s anime) in japanese and in english dub (g-force). in one scene, the heroes are trying to save some astronauts. the japanese version was like "even corpses are useful sometimes! bwahaha!", and in the american version, it was "we saved the astronauts!".

i have always liked anime because it was an art form that i really liked. to compare this to paintings, i will say this. i really like lots of genres. but impressionism sucks. i just don't like it. with media, like anime, either you like it or you don't.

as for flashing your anime in your sig or whatever, it shouldn't bother you. i will never be a fan of many things, but seeing as how it isn't offensive, you shouldn't have a problem with it. if anyone wants picasso in your sig, i won't bother you.

Anime is an acquired taste. Not everyone likes it. Even though I do enjoy anime I tend to avoid certain genres because it's either too far fetched or its too internal (i.e. Gasaraki seemed too...i dunno, internalish for me, and Sailor Moon I wouldn't be seen dead watching).

It's like asking what's so great about motion picture? Motion picture is becoming almost hackneyed yet a majority of people like it despite the struggle to find new ideas and finding fresh idea seams to draw from.

Last night while watching the South Park movie (1:00 in the morning, yay! http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) this poorly drawn AOL/Anime commercial came on. Some generic-can't-ever-die-cause-he's-so-1337 anime hero character was running around on an airplane or something crazy. And he had this portable AOL phone thinger and he was all "LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL I R LONELY!!!11 http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif" then a giant piece of metal almost sliced his ballsack off.

Anyway, I don't see you complaining about anime that big of a deal, to be honest. I'm also not a big fan of Japanese cartoons or any form of animation, but that doesn't mean that I want to stand on top of a soapbox and preach about how bad it is.

Look, anime is a bit of a phase at the moment. It will eventually die down and kids will move on to the next bestest thing, so don't worry too much about it.

Actually, I think it's only become a recent 'trendy' fad. I remember back when Robotech was popular, unless you were a closet geek or a little kid, you didn't watch it. Nowadays, they have a whole channel dedicated to Anime.
You look around a mall and count how many people you see wearing anime t-shirts and stuff.

People use anime names and pictures in their sigs to show that they like it and attract other anime fans. Someone may see someone who has a certain anime character in their sig, realise that they like the same thing and PM them, simple as that. Same as how people who support certain sport teams will wear the kit, just to show they are a fan.

And if your not a fan of anime, your not being forced to look at it/read threads about it. There just happens to be alot of anime fans on this board (PSO is a really anime styled game) and of course people will talk about it here.

one thing about anime that's always kinda bothered me is the fact that Nearly EVERY girl is made to almost complete sexual perfection.

....seemingly made SPECIFICLY Tailored to males and the perverse taste.

Inu_Ranma
Nov 30, 2003, 03:29 PM
Ummm...that's not even close to being 'almost every girl.' You're talking about a few Anime which were made with characters who were supposed to be sex symbols. There are quite a few, most even, females in Anime who aren't drawn with sexual perfection in mind. You just won't find them drawn by Gainax or the Tenchi crew, who both know that about 90% of their fan base is people who are...male.

And Lain? Are you serious? Are you actually implying that the 12-13 year old kids in Lain who were actually drawn to look that age (for once) were sexy? If so, you have problems.

For non-sexually-perfect characters in good and popular Anime, see works by Ghibli or Satoshi Kon, see Lodoss War, Slayers, Trigun, Noir, Maze Trigun, and a few others, just to name a few that are currently popular in the united states. It seems to me that you've just been watching the wrong Anime.

Back on topic. I have an Anime name because I've watched Anime since the late 80's. I grew up on Anime. I don't like all, or even most Anime. I like some Anime (such as, duh, the works of Takahashi Rumiko). I don't quite see the dearth of Anime threads and whatnot that you seem to see in this board, either. There are certainly a few, but they're not exactly hard to avoid. I'd be more annoyed by that one Boondock Saints sig that like 50 people on 30 different random online forums seem to have. At least my unoriginality is original. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Come to think of it, I recall you posting this topic before too...

[not insulting anime at all]
Anime is a fad. there is no way to get around it, under it, or through it. Things will change, as always. Just as there will be no more little white kids telling me that i am "wack" this japanese subculture will fade.
[/not insulting anime at all]

The question is, why has anime managed to stay popular and increase in popularity for so long? My theory is that it applies a very large group of people. In NA cartoons, nothing really applies to the ages past ten or eleven. It provides an escape for only them. With anime, there are fanciful dramas that cater to many age groups. Weather it be the ten year old girl who wants to be tall, blonde, and strong like sailor moon, or the sixteen year old boy who likes inu yasha because it is something that takes him out of his boring life. People always want to be more than they are, and sometimes Sports icons and rap stars cant give them that. It also lets the older crowd hold on to their childhood, while still experiancing an adult storyline and action.

Naturally, one will hear about anime all the time (especially in the age group that this, and other forums are aimed at).

Captain logic to the rescue once more...

I don't know about the rest of you, but I watch what I want to, not because its a fad or something. Talk about it or don't, love it or hate it, do what you want to (as long as that isn't killing people or something). Go ahead and inhale a can of pesticide if it pleases you (not really, its kind of bad for you).

Ehh ok let's see...
As previously mentioned, Anime is a medium. Like movies or comics or breakfast cereals or what-have-you.

As such, I watch Anime, just about as much as I watch other shows that would be considered "normal" to some, and movies that are not animated or Anime in nature.

I have favorite Anime, just as I do favorite "normal" shows and movies, and books, and video games.

There are genres within the media known as Anime just as most other mediums. Action, romance, comedy, all tailored to specific target audiences. There are Anime I like, and Anime I hate, just like video games, shows, movies, books, and breakfast cereals.

Anime, although often hidden, also carry values and their own message that they try and get across (which, after all, is the reason people make things in a medium) to their intended audiences.

Is it annoying that some people think that ALL Anime is automatically good? Hell yes, I agree on that.
But...
Is it annoying that some people think that ALL Anime is automatically bad? Likewise, yes.

Also as noted earlier, it's nothing special.
But as video games become more popular/advanced, so does the Anime that carries the same style of flow as derived from the Japanese culture.

Make sense?

I hate the crappy "anime" that they show on TV nowadays (Pokemon and the other ripoffs), or the anime where they reuse the same clips over and over and over, only flipped around so it looks different.

Oh, speaking of which, I saw a short part of the .hack anime on TV, and that anime looked awesome, or at least the drawing style (anime, right?) I dunno if its called anime for TV but it definately has that eastern feel to it, and that cartoon looked like it was drawn really well!

Story.
Every 'American' cartoon is just a thirty minute this and that. You can watch every episode in any random order and that would be that.

Anime on the other hand, has a storyline that lasts season per season. "...To Be Continued"
usually ends most epidsodes. Oh, and the cute teary eyes !! http://mywebpages.comcast.net/juzzam1/lh15yoproms.jpg

I don't think that anybody's uncalled for in what they've said in this thread, personally.

The originator did, after all, ask what the hell we thought was up with Anime. Many different answers were given, and that's because everybody sees something different in Anime. Some people see crap, some people see art. It's like anything that someone may call art, in that way.

What's the difference between anime and a cartoon? I don't see one at all. Drawing style? Then we need a name for Simpsons animation as opposed to Batman. Seriousness, subject matter? The X-Men series got very deep just like the anime I see, yet isn't called anime.

Anime comes from Japan, and thats about it. I think their original term for animation over there was Toie (not the studio though), but it got changed to anime in the 80's.
