I made a post a long time ago saying that I find it insulting when people call HUnewearls HUnnys. I tried to forget about it, but there's a particuliar quote from another thread that really stuck out. It's almost funny to read it when you're paying attention to the right thing...
On 2003-12-08 16:11, Ian-KunX wrote:
...No, seriously, I've seen a billion HUmars with BKBs, 0 with DCs, and about even on BKBs and DCs with HUcaseals. HUcasts all use BKBs. I... Haven't really played with many HUnnys. The one I remember had a BKB, but that was legit('lo, Muff')
What's with the pet name, eh? It didn't strain this person's fingers to type out HUcaseal, what's so bad about typing HUnewearl? Why the pet name people? I'm just asking why. Don't jump down my throat saying I'm over reacting... I'm just asking why. I don't think asking is too extreme. Why make it sound like this character class is your sugar pie? Just answer me why, I don't care what it is... I just have to know why you must insist on calling HUnewearls HUnnys. Its pretty clear the pet name isn't just a quick alternative to the long HUnewearl name, and I want to know why.
Saying "omg its a game, I can do whatever I want" doesn't count. Same with "because I want to" and "because you're dumb" and "this is stupid". I want you to give a REAL reason why you use the pet name. Hopefully that isn't too much to ask. The only reason why I'm asking is because I can't think of a reason myself. Calling a HUnewearl Hunny makes no sense to me, and I can't imagine why anyone would give a collection of polygons a pet name like its their girlfriend. Let alone use it on an everyday basis. Please explain it to me, because I simply don't understand. Please be intellegent... and please be honest with yourself and honest in you're replies. I want to approach this with white flags waving, okay? If you really think there's nothing wrong with it, then just explain it. I'd rather understand you're true meaning, than get all flustered every time I see the pet name.

...I thought it was already explained before that when you're ingame and talking about the classes and so on, HUnny became pretty much the name for that class because of the limited message length.
There was never anything demeaning about it when it started being used(infact quite the opposite), atleast no more demeaning than the HUnny's outfits were by themselves.
Why is it an issue to you? Is a polygonal character with a nickname of "HUnny" ruining the experience or something? I, myself, don't quite get what the big deal is. There are shortened names given to most things, from firearms to vehicles.

Hunewearl = a bitch to type quickly in game when your running around trying to kill monsters.
Hunny = quicker alternative to say.
Its just a term that came about when version 1 was about and its stuck, nothing more then that.
I'll just said what I said there since you didn't bother to comeback to your old one.
Okay, I only read the first post in this thread. To me, you sound like the PSO version of a feminists. "STOP CALLING US HUNNIES!!!! THAT TERM IS OFFENSIVE TO HUNEWEARLS!!!!"
You don't know if it's offensive to all HUnny's (I use that term out of spite). I, for one, never minded being called a HUnny and several other HUnnys I know don't care either. I reccomend that you speak for yourself instead of an entire group.
Hey I made it to the quote, rox0r.
To the Author you realy need to loosen up.
Seriously its a-fucking-game. Do you take offense to acroynms such as lol too?
Its a little thing called slang. I have a level 172 hunny I dont take offence to such terms. If I did, man, I would worry about myself.

Odd indeed that the quotee writes all names full, except that particular one.
To add to the comments of ppl saying it's an abbreviation. Here's my abbreviations for all classes
HUm (Yeah, that's all that one is good for)
HUny (no comment...)
HUck (Sounds a lot like Hick doesn't it?)
HUcky (With the comment on the HUck, this sounds really insulting)
RAm (Hey wouldn't that be a better one for the Huck?)
RAmy (Can anyone find an insulting meaning for this?)
RAc (Considerin some comments on some bonkers, yeah, good for haning some tools...)
RAcky (As in Rackety)
FOm (Don't know what it is, but id doesn't sound nice)
FOmy (Like Homy I guess)
FOn (Another one I couldn'r find an insulting meaning for...)
FOny (my favorite!)
I admit it's not really that original, but at least we can now insult every one by class...

I don't know about everyone else, but I use "HUne" because:
#1 - It can't get mixed up with "newm", as "FOne" might; no HUnewms!
#2 - I'm dyslexic and it's difficult to spell "newearl" - I can spell "caseal" fine, though.
#3 - No one complains about it, ever.
HUnny is just used because it's short and it sounds good. FOnny isn't a play on words, so people don't use it. >_> It's not meant to be degrading, so why worry about it?
To me, you sound like the PSO version of a feminists. "STOP CALLING US HUNNIES!!!! THAT TERM IS OFFENSIVE TO HUNEWEARLS!!!!"

ok, but many of the ppl using the shorthand are not dyslexic and can spell fine. And it can't even be said they are lazy. Like in the example, the other names (like HUcaseal) are written in full. It's ONLY the HUnewearl that has a shorthand name. And the complaint is that his shorthand, which is normaly used among dear friends, is used by many towards complete strangers. If that happens IRL, the next sentence may very wel be "Do you wanna f***?".
#3 - No one complains about it, ever.
uhhhm, wrong. This topic is a complaint. And it is not the only one. Although I have to admit the complaints are few.
HUnny is just used because it's short and it sounds good. FOnny isn't a play on words, so people don't use it. >_> It's not meant to be degrading, so why worry about it?
I use potentialy degrading words in a non-degrading manner only among friends that I know will understand. NEVER towards complete strangers. Just a matter of being polite.
And if you don't see the play on words in FOny, I think it sounds a lot like another word for fake. Talking about insulting...
LamerPanda

It's ONLY the HUnewearl that has a shorthand name.
Not really. I don't even give most classes the benefits of more than "HU", "RA", or "FO" if there's only one of that particular class in the game. If there's two HUs, let's say HUcaseal or HUnewearl, I might type out "HUcas" and "HUne". TEH HORROR.
And the complaint is that his shorthand, which is normaly used among dear friends, is used by many towards complete strangers. If that happens IRL, the next sentence may very wel be "Do you wanna f***?".
You're online, in a game, that has an extremely limited area for text. People are going to use shorthand, and it is generally not followed by lewd innuendo. There are different circumstances offline and online.
uhhhm, wrong. This topic is a complaint.
About "HUnny" more so than "HUne". If you're offended by "HUne", you're not the type of person I would give the dignity of a decent nickname to.
And if you don't see the play on words in FOny, I think it sounds a lot like another word for fake. Talking about insulting...
I've never known anyone that even *USES* "FOny", but if they did, it most likely wouldn't be used in an insulting manner.
Instead of complaining about a nickname that rarely, if ever, implies anything other than a shorthand form of a name, why don't you channel your energy into something more useful? I can think of better uses for your time than complaning about "HUnny". Focus on something else, this is hardly worth one topic, let alone two.
Makes me recall a sitcom that I watched yesterday, in which there was a girl who absolutely wanted to play Santa Claus this Christmas because she believed in the equality of the sexes and thought that the fact that only a man could play Santa Claus was sexist.
She could be Santa with massive amounts of makeup and props! XD

Anyways, "HUnny"... it depends on how it is pronounced on whether it is a problem or not. It could be pronounced "honey", in wish case I think you may be thinking of, and it's true that it could cause problems.
If, however, the user pronounces it differently, for example, "hyu-ni", it's not so much a problem.
It's all in how it's said.
I usually just say "hyu-new-earl" rather than "hun-new-earl" or variations of "hun-...", so "hyu-ni" makes more sense to me.
I think that's where some of the misconception around this thread may lie.

Unfortunately "Hunny" or variations of such, will remain in the pso community, just like slang will remain in the English language. Is it right? Is it wrong? Neither...it just is. I believe youll (the author) will have an easier time ignoring those that use that term, than to try and change the mind of a whole community that has used the term since the Dreamcast days.
I understand your position, I myself try to type the characters name instead of the class they are in. And if I do type the class, I do it completely..to me it is just common sense. For example, if I refer to the homosapien race in a term paper or such, I will not shorten it to "homo" for obvious reasons...
Hucaseal is a Hucaseal and Hunewearl is Hunewearl and so on and so forth...
It is doubtfull that the author of this thread is a feminist... the author is just a person that wants an explanation of why certain people choose that abbreviation of "Hunny".

Word Select is about the best you get from me if I need to refer to you, but sometimes I'll bring up class if I'm talking about a class to another person, which brings in the abbreviations.

If you continue on with my response, you will notice that I also use the class names, but I choose to type them out completely. About the only time that I believe shortcuts or abbreviations (in general) would be appropriate would be during a battle, not when you are at the lobby...the lobby offers the time to type out complete thoughts and sentences...
Btw, you could possibly ask the person how they would be liked to be referred to? For example my character's name is quite long, so I accept been called "Sen" for short...

All it comes down to is taking the word out of context and being offended by how you perceive it.
As already said, it's a term which has been used since the very beginning days of the first release of the game on the DC, it's not going to dissapear. So if you're offended by it, you might as well just play offline or stop playing the game altogether.

FOnewearls I'll say FOne. RAcaseals are RAcassies. HUcast, HUmar, RAmar, RAmarl, RAcast, FOmar, FOmarl and FOnewm aren't long enough to bother shortening.
And... Um... I feel loved? >_>;;;

I picked the 'let's shorten this a tad' thing while I didn't have a kb adapter, and it wasn't feasible to go to a second bubble of text if 'HUnewearl' or the like took up half of it.

Edit:
Hell, I have characters I don't even refer to by their actual names. 'Persephone' is entirely too goddamned long to type, so most of the time I call her 'Seph. 'CALLIOPEIA' is also too long, so I call her Callie. 'Kal'Roth-ylt' is once again too long, so I call him Kal. Is this meant as an insult? Uh... No, not really, it's there for convenience.

Wait a second.
Even if it degraded them at all, why would we assume that it would be into a sex object?
So is calling a child a "kid" automatically degrade them into a sex object?
Is calling an automobile a "car" automatically degrade them into a sex object?
Is calling a male flight attendant a "steward" or a female flight attendant a "stewardess" degrading them into a sexual object?
Some might contend that "stewardess" is degrading, but I don't think you'll get charged for sexual harrassment for using it.

Hey "HUnny" haters, I've got an idea. Why don't you sue me for my fucking capital sin? I'll drag you over in front of Judge Mathis, for the reasons The Great Maddox has laid down:
[Judge Mathis] happens to have the most finely tuned bullshit detector I've ever seen. Nothing gets past him. Sometimes he plays along with someone when he knows they're lying, letting the person build a complex house of contradictions thatched together with bullshit so he can come back and stomp everyone's ass in the court room. Judge Judy, Joe Brown, and "Texas Justice" Larry Joe have nothing on him. Mathis could chew them up and spit them out like a pile of soggy sausages. He's part Shaft, part Matlock (the non-flaccid, non-geriatric part), and all badass. Hail Mathis.
Take me on, Christian Mothers Against The Use of The Word HUnny. I'm convincing the judge you all need a shotgun up the ass or my name isn't KodiaX987!!!
It wouldn't be Christian Mothers against the word HUnny, it would be Insane Feminist Mothers aganist the word HUnny.

My main char is male, but all my other chars are female. When reading the strong points of the different classes, I seem to end up with the female time and again.
Anyway, during Halloween I took those other chars online to get more Jack'o'Lanters. My FOnewearl was first. As soon as I enter the lobby some of the male chars (mostly HUmars) flock around like I am actualy a chick. For the sake of roleplaying I wouldn't even have a problem with acting like a female, but those guys were the worst. If males would be coming on that strong to any new female that entered a bar, they would be thrown out. The use of the term Hunny often seems to follow that same pattern of adolescent behavior.
The reason it took me so long to remember is I managed to cut it short by simply typing 'B U R P !'. They all left immediately, 2 of them even noting 'oh, you're a guy'. Like there's no chicks that ever do stuff like that. I even smile on the memory now that i found it again...
So, next time something like that happens, just show some 'manly' obnoxious behavior. That oughta teach'em.
