View Full Version : PSO just doesn't do anything for me anymore (long and boring
Sadly, I feel that It's time for me to spend my valuable and meager amount of time on other games than PSO. It?s not the game?s fault itself in general, but other things that are turning me away from PSO. For one, I haven?t played it for a while, and was just starting to wade into it when I noticed how much of a dinosaur I have turned into. I?m a useless relic, bottom line. The community is not as it once was. 8 pages of people on my guild card were slashed to 2, and of those two, I?d be lucky if one person was on. It?s obvious that I missed the rush, and of the other relics that still play, and there are a few of em, I just can?t play at the same times, and they too have changed. As to the rest of the POSW community in general, most of you are neophytes, after my time. I view it as the equivalent of being a middle-schooler and playing with kindergartners. No offence, but you guys are just too young to the game and the community for my tastes.
Look at this website. We have been mod-less for about 2 weeks I think, and if not that long then it will be soon. PSO lived a proverbial life of wine, women, and song, and flared out after short-lived life.
The game itself just isn?t deep enough. After 600 hours, the only differences in the game is when somebody hacks you or steals an item of yours. Running through the levels with any team of any players is just too dull for enigmatic old me. Coupled with the turnabout for the worse in server and player quality since my triumphant return, it just isn?t enough to keep me coming back.
This is also a pre-emptive strike. If I forced myself to play until PSO v.2 or the possibly canceled
PSO2, I would grow even more weary and pessimistic of the game, and by doing this, I will have enough strength and willpower to return to the series.
I will always have fond memories of PSO, like when I gave Mindblade an, IMHO lame old agito and he was grateful for it, or when Zippo, Underlord, and I faced Dark Falz on hard for the first time. I was so happy when he fell down dead, and was horrified to learn of the ?3rd form,? the hard way. I have also met many, many cool people through PSO and the online community supporting it, and do not regret ever picking up the game. I only hope that I touched some people (for better, but I?ll take worse too) in the same way.
I will, however, continue to be an active poster on this board, because I have played the game and demand that my voice be heard, not to mention that there are some real characters that hang around here.
I would also like to apologize to anyone that I was rude or crass too, including you cheaters out there, not that I?m submitting to you or your causes or anything, but just that I?m feeling in the apologetic mood at the moment.
*Blows off dust accumulated on Starcraft/Broodwar CD?s*
Cya on PSO v.2, should any of you decide to stick around long enough for it.

I went on today and got on for five minutes and was so disgusted with boredom I just turned it off
I don't think I'll play till version 2

Same thing here, but my highest level character was all the sudden "unable to find file on the vmu" even though i saved successfully the time before, so i started a new char. It made it a little more fun but i dont feel like putting in a hundred more hours so my guy is lvl 70

I still play a lot. The game has lost it's charm, and everything has been un-covered, but it's still fun to play with people I know.
I hope version 2 comes out soon. The new modes seem great. In Ultimate each level will feel new, and monsters and bosses will be redone. There can be a PSO World Soccer cup. The battle mode can be a blast as long as they find a way to make sure that each class doesn't have a large advantage and cheaters can't get in.
One thing is for sure. PSO has left many memories. One of the best times was when the game had just came out and everyone was a newbie. The game seemed endless, till every item was released. It was fun to be a level 11 bad ass leading level 1's through the forest.
The game is still fun thougth. A few weeks back with my new character, my whole team was wiped out except me on the worm boss. The battle took 20 minutes and at the end I was all out of monomates and monofluids making healing impossible.
There are a lot of new posters, but I see nothing wrong with it. It's good to see new people coming instead of the same old people every day. It's just the few who ask these stupid questions that don't belong here.

Well, their are rising stars of PSO world who are begining to over shadow the "relics" of PSO World, and thats somehting that just has to be dealt with. I too understand how frustrating it is to lose all ur pso buds, but the game only loses its spunk when you take it away. After 300 hours PSO gets boaring. And theres nothing you can do about it... Unless you mkae it fun again. I re-invent my gameplay all the time when i find PSO boring. Especially after reaching lv 100, i find their is less and less to acomplish. I supose im lucky though because by the time my 2nd char. reaches lv 100 PSO V2.0 will be coming out soon...
Im just so excited for V2.0 that i know if i put PSO1.0 asside, i wont have the heart to play V2.0 anymore... So im here to stay to say the least.... If it wasent for V2.0 however i know that i wouldnt be posting this or playing pso any longer for that matter.

Sorry to hear that Spy. But your right, the game isn't exactly deep. I've been clearing out the same 4 levels for a couple of months now. I would have quit weeks ago, but I still have a few friends that keep me comming back. I still have fun standing around chatting the night away.
I bought a PS2. I thought that might have been the death of Danger Girl. But the games out there for it kinda suck.
I'm not burned out yet, but I may be one of the last of a dying breed. I too have gone from 15 pages of guild cards down to two. The game has changed for me. But If I said I still wasn't having a blast, I would be lying. I can't wait to get home and play http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_razz.gif.

If you overplay the game, it's going to become boring. I only play once every other day or so... Only for an hour or two at a time. This way I won't become bored, plus lets me do other things.

I've heard this kind of alot lately, people quiting because they are bored, but will come back in ver.2. I guess that's ok, but are you really quitting? No, you are just taking a break. I admit the game gets boring at times, but in other ways it never will. I was standing in town for 2 hours last night talking with my friends and making perverted symbols. That's what brings me back, people. Being able to meet people is an awsome thing combined with PSO the game itself. I almost never play offline because it drives me mad on how extremly boring it is. Spy, mabey you shouldn't "quit", just don't go on alot. I'm sure one time if you log on and there are alot of your friends on you would love to go play with them. Oh well, these are just my thoughts.
Overall I think you can't quit really. You are just halting your play for the time being. I stuffed away my playstation and I though I would never play it again, until one day I just decided to pull it out again. I didn't quit at all. I just didn't play for a year or two.
And if any of you guys want to go on PSO and play, I will most of the time be on during weekends, and all of next week because of spring break. Look me up some time...Peace.

True, true. It's boring now, and the only reason to keep going back is to find that ever-elusive rare and to hang out with friends.
Not that this has a lot to do with anything, but my best PSO memory stems back to Dark Falz in Hard as well. It was a cold night that night. The steam was rising and I just knew something bad was going down. My party apperantly decided it was best not to save their scape dolls as they had none. I had about 10 or so. We hacked our way thru the spikey things and the first two forms of DF and the my horror there was a thrid form. By this time I had used about 4 Moons and being that I was an android and the only one who could take DF's Grants w/o dying, I soon ran out of them. Of course when I called for everyone's Moon's they refused. Very foolish indeed. So there I was, a puny Lv 55 (I think) alone with the true Dark Falz. I didn't think it was possible, but when I had finally ran out of Dimate, Trimate, Star Atomizers and all but three Scape dolls, I saw DF rear his ugly head, vanish and be replaced by Rico. It was truly a beatiful thing.
Oddly enough, two of my other best memories are of me being robbed. It gave me something to think about and made me a lot more cautious.
Anyways, I don't mind new people on PSO seeing as how I'm stuck playing with the same people everyday. (Not that I mind.) I've tried playing in public rooms but it's just not fun. I get bored within 5 minutes and when the most stimulating conversation is "WUT RARES YO GOT?" I'd rather play alone.
04-08-2001, 10:20 PM
Good point Tolwyn,
I have the game for a long very time, but don't have the time to play it endlessly like other people, thus I am not bored with it yet. My highest character is at level 75 and sometime it took me 3-5 days (not consecutive) just to go up one level.
Couple more things to keep the game from getting too boring is to create different characters, I have four of them now (the level 75 Keyser Soze, and three other characters who are in the 20s levels), and try to find all the "rares" by yourself, and don't trade. If you get new, neat, awesome, or whatever weapon all the time then the game will get boring very quickly. If you set goals and keep imagining what you'll find next, then the game becomes fun again.
If all your friends are all gone, then try to find new friends. I know the game is clutter with assholes, but there are some good people out there.
But then again, leaving PSO might be a good thing. Because sometime the game can become a social life killer.

Yes the game does get boring but i still play becuase i hav eno life. And one other thing just because we are called neophytes doesnt mean we are "newbies", we just dont post alot. (no offense) http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_smile.gif

After 600 hours...umm...Six HUNDRED hours!!!!!
Any game you enjoyed playing for even one hundred hours was money well spent. I can count the number of console games I've played for a total of 600+ hours on my fingers. If you spent $60 on PSO, that comes to 10 hours of gameplay per dollar.
Frankly, I don't think the majority of PSO players get to 600 hours before they get bored of it and move on to other games. That's a heck of a lot of gameplay value to expect out of a game already.
I'm not bored with it yet, but I'm more into arcade style games--and PSO's arcade action is simply more interesting than that of most shooters and beat-em-ups (not that there are lots of beat-em-ups nowadays).

Seeing that second-to-last line you typed, Spy, makes me want to take a shot in the dark and say.....I take it you're a big PC game fan? If so, I can share your sentiments toward PSO not being deep enough. Seeing as how PC games (especially CRPGs) tend to be more lavish and feature-rich, one can easily become bored with PSO after being subjected to such games as Baldur's Gate, Wizardry, and Starcraft, etc. From this, I can understand.
Also, one of the reason's I'm starting to get turned off by PSO is the fact that--and it may seem silly to some--you don't really have much that you can do to your character to give him/her a real sense of identity. One of the most uncomfortable things for me is to teleport into a certain ship, hop over to a certain block.......and have 90% of the characters there look EXACTLY the same as you. It's disheartening at times. I mean, you put all this effort into making a seemingly original character, only to have the vast majority of the world sharing the same look. Makes you want to delete that character and start a new with something more unique....
Other reason's i'm getting turned off are that all my real life friends don't play AT ALL anymore---all 14 of them. Not a single one plays online for even an hour. They're all heavily burnt out on the game. Reason? The dupers/hackers took all the mystique and enjoyment out of the game for us. No longer can we find a rare that no one else has heard of before, or recieved in a seemingly legitimate trade. Sure, finding a legit rare is ::ahem:: a rare and wonderful moment. But after seeing that same rare being used time and time again by everyone and their grandma (read--Spread Needle, etc), the item quickly loses it's appeal. Do you get what i'm saying? You find something that no one in your crew has found before, and you're hoping to impress them with it.....only to have them ALL say, "oh.....i've seen that before...it's decent". Disheartening to say the least.
And even despite all this, the main allure of PSO is COMMUNITY. Getting together with friends to BS around and romp through the levels, cracking inside jokes that no one else would get, and poking fun at your friend for thinking BotsMaster was an anime.....all in good humor, and all for a laugh. But sadly, even those times are changing. No longer do these same people log on late at night/early morning. They've all moved on to other things--life, other games, etc. And of my 14 friends, only maybe 3 or 4 are interested in PSO v2. The rest say "it's more of the same....why bother?" Maybe it's just that fellas like me enjoy the game TOO MUCH and expected everyone else that I've played with to play the game as often as I do. But not everyone has the flexablility in their schedules as I do (I work 11 hours a day, 4 days a week, have 3 days off a week, have 15 days a year that I can take off, and I have Intermediate Medical Leave of Absence in which I can take close to 2 months off of work if I so choose--I have insomnia which affects my productivity at work....gotta love United Airlines =)...so that may contribute to why all my friends don't play as often anymore.....I dunno....
But anyways.....sorry for the rant. Just wanted to let you know that you're not the only one getting burned out on the game. We all might have different reasons for being so, but the end result is the same. I've been a long, long time lurker around these parts, but never really bothered to post. Now that I have more time on my hands since cutting down on my PSO intake, I figured i'd contribute more to these parts. And who knows? Maybe by hanging around here more often, it might spark a newfound interest in the game for me. Time will tell. Anyways, sorry again for the rant. Hats off to anyone who bothers to read the entire thing. =D Most people never seem to bother reading my stuff.

For the record.
This board is still modded and will be modded at all times. I will be leaving once gideon makes up his mind (this could take awhile), on a replacement.

I understand the thoughts of Spy...even after my measley 100 hours (between 2 characters) it's gotten pretty repetitive. The chatting with friends and meeting new people always makes it more fun.
Right now, I haven't played PSO since Saturday night sometime...and only then for an hour maybe.
I'm torn between quite a few good games out there across all platforms. Maybe this list will helps some that are getting bored with PSO until v.2 comes out.
Zone of Enders (PS2) - cool mech game done in anime style. Kinda like Gundam...
Metal Gear Solid 2 demo (PS2) - Totally awesome...even if it is only a small portion of the game...
Black & White (PC) - Still haven't gotten past the tutorial island, but fun nonetheless.
Onimusha: Warlords (PS2) - Awesome game too. Using the engine of the Resident Evil series, but based in feudal Japan.
EverQuest (PC) - Yes I still play...addicting game it is, but still fun. Started up an Enchanter who is lvl 4 now.
That's just a short list of what I try to actively play right now when I'm not on PSO.
Danger_Girl - Let me know what kinda games you like and I can try to tell you some good PS2 games that you would enjoy http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_smile.gif

ooooooo i see i feel your pain
04-09-2001, 12:39 PM
To this date, I think there is only one game that I played more than PSO, Shining Force 3 (all 3 scenarios). I'd play through everything, defeating ever single monster, continously level up in the training dungeon, even after completing it so many times, just because I love the game. Though, I might have played Starcraft or Madden/NHL on genesis alot, but I never really counted. It's understandable for PC people to say that PSO is not deep enough. PSO, after all, is on a console, and not on a PC where you got yourself all that memory space, etc. And for a console game, you gotta admit PSO is pretty dam good.
As far as PSO straying me away from other games...definitely. I got 74 Dreamcast games, not to mention my other SAT/PSX/GEN/NES games. 73 DC games collecting dust for now. There are plenty of games I haven't touched enough. Sooner or later I'll stray away from PSO for a bit, to play these other games. Heck, yesterday I did something I didn't think I would do. With all this hoopla during the PS2 launch, I was lucky enough to walk into Best Buy while they were re-stocking, and happen to grab a PS2. I got one to sell actually. I wasn't too lucky selling it off eBay or asking people. And since it's in every stores, I don't think there really is any need for me to sell, plus Sega is developing for it (bittersweet). For months I was trying to find reasons to open the blue box, but darnitt, many games are lacking, and plenty are very lacking. Many of the games I initially wanted to get, became disappointed. *cough* Bouncer *cough* As far as ZOE and Onimusha, I'd get ZOE and spend the $50 for that and the MGS2 Demo. The 2 games alone appear to be short games, as good as they are, but I dunno if I would spend that $50 for something too short. I dunno I guess most Playstation games are lacking, like there just bland, re-hash. Of course there are those gems, that I can't wait to get. Enough of my PS2 rant.
Well Spy and every one else who feels the same way... we'll welcome you back when PSOv2 comes rolling out... (of course when you make the occasional drop by in PSO). Or maybe I'll hit up online with Broodwar.
As for the Neophyte thing... well I may be a "newbie" to this Board and to you, Spy, as for the game, I'm no "newbie." I got the game on day one, and after trying the game out for 5 minutes offline, I played my first hours online, and was it sweet. Unfortunately with all the bad ish going on earlier (hacking/cheating/stealing/PKing/BSOD), I strayed away from playing online. Heck, I think I played the next 100 hours offline with, that's how concerned I was about going online. Now I go online primarily, and many times, just chat online. Now can anyone tell any console game allows you to do that (ok a non-dreamcast game)? And like I said above, 73 other games are sitting on my shelf, yelling, "Play with me... Play with me next." =)
One more thing to add (like I haven't said enough)... I'm just glad there are people like everyone here, who make the PSO a worthy experience.
PC gaming generally sucks, with the exception of a few games, like the aforementioned Starcraft series which is still fun, 3 years after it's release! Patches, updates, addons, hardware requirments.... it really can be a pain in the ass in general.
Now, as to the newbies/neophytes:
The online and offline games are totally different from each other, and if you have 100 hours offline and 0 hours online you are an online newbie. If you are a neophtye, or new to the forum, you're a newbie to me at least, and I'm deluded enough to have my own pig-headed opinions http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_razz.gif.
04-09-2001, 01:37 PM
I think judging someone by their post count is kinda out in left field imho. I bet there are tons of people who never posted here or just started but could school you spy.
Well I know I have put in around 500 hours with all of my 7 characters that i have had and the game is somewhat boring now but its still some what interesting with my new character Ice who is at level 57 now is fun to play with since its a different section Id i am gradually finding different items and rares...... and since I don't trade there are still weapon I have not used and would like to find on my own ( witch will never happen but o well)..... but once I get to level 100 and have a good number of rares i found the game might get boring but by that time PSO ver.2 should be out and bring that spark back into the game..... the only thing that has gotten kinda boring to me is posting lol
The newbies have shared none or few of the experiences that I have. To me, there are two classes of people on PSOW, people that I know and can recognize, and people that I don't. Most of the people that I don't know are neophytes and newbies, simple as that. As for being schooled, I have no problem with that. I am not all knowing, even though I would like to be.
Most of the newbies will always be newbies to me.
04-11-2001, 11:24 AM
I too, know how you feel. Boredom sure has quickly set in with this game. You can only kill so many Sharks and Dimenians before you decide enough is enough.
As of last night, I threw my conscience out the window, and started to take dupes.
Big deal! , you may say. But in actuallity, I've been trying my damndest to avoid trading for dupes/getting dupes as gifts.
But after all this time of finding jack squat in all my online games (jack exists! check the waterfall room in Ruins 1! http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_razz.gif ) , I got fed up.
You can only take so many people coming into games with items that they could never find on their own, like Lavis Cannon. Or those damn mags that seem to be soooo fashionable nowadays. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_razz.gif Give me Lucca's Bana anyday..
It's not exactly thrilling to go through the game over and over and over just to get the exact same items again and again.. (Too many INVISIBLE GUARDS and Celestial Shields.. @_@)
I guess the only reasons I still venture online is to find all the elusive material I need to make my characters the best they can be before v.2 hits the shores.
And of course, for the people.
Sure, you can't even take 2 steps anywhere without running into someone who says 'NE1 g0t h3@ven'$ PUni$h3r?'
But there are people who make you come back for more. The friends I've made online, as well as the ones I already knew before PSO make the journey into Ragol much, much sweeter...
If I were to think about how much time I've spent on this game.. I'd probably go into a coma. I can't think of a game where I felt that the majority of my time spent with it, has been time well spent.
Even if they don't read this, I'd like to thank everyone who makes me come back to this game, time and time again. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_smile.gif
Soo.. I hope that one of those cards you still have is mine, Danger... ;_;

I'm one of those fortunate souls who is paid to play video games.Lots of them.Over and over.Level after level.System after system.I play 16 hours a day almost EVERY day.Try MY world. How do I do it?Simple......variety.I'm sure lots of you have another system or game BESIDES pso.Toss in Tokyo Extreme for an afternoon BEFORE you go on line that evening.Play something else.I'll beta test and game review all day then go home and play PSO til the wee hours and have a great time doing it.I dont allow the game to get boring.

Oh yeah you got that right KeyserSoze! There plenty of em out there all right. But there is still some player that are nice to play with. Practically 6 page of my guild card i can only narrow down to 1 page of people i can say is a nice to play with. I still consider myself as a newbie, even though i have 250 (est) hr clocked in (total of all character). Anyway, in reality there is assholes everywhere, why not in a game. So cheer up. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_smile.gif
