And Now, A Serious Answer:

Religion is something ppl have cultivated and rallied about and despised since Cro-Magnon man added ceremony to the buring of our dead.

Religion is accepted because it often provides easy answers and a purpose to our existance. Going to our graves is a bit easier when we imagine a Cosmic Parental Figure is tending the light at the end of the tunnel.

Religion is rejected because it often elevates one class or sect of ppl above others. This can be seen in the "holier than thou" attitudes of most (not ALL)churchgoers, Evangilists, Jehovah's Witnesses, Samurai, Congresspersons, Convenience Store Owners and Terrorists.

Personally, I'd rather drink 180 proof Nevada Everclear with an Irish Catholic whose trying to rekindle his/her waning faith than watch endless SUPERBOOK reruns with a bible-thumping, sheet wearing, child-abusing Southern Baptist...

But that's just me ,]

As already said, it's not like religion just became some sort of fad or anything, it's always being discussed, debated, talked about and made into a focal point. It's prolly just standing out to you more now.
