View Full Version : What's with the swearing in the lobby?

OK, don't get me wrong, I'm no Polly Pureheart by any means, but last night around 7:30 or 8pm Eastern Time, we got online - we being me playing, my husband, 7 yr old and 8 yr old watching and typing for me - so we could show the kids the Easter eggs and fireworks, and maybe find someone to help me transfer some stuff to my son's character...jump onto our comfy home at Puck 9 - and while checking my Guild Card list, some idiot somehow figured out how to override the swear filter and was typing FUCK.
First off, how did this get through. Second off, ***WHY*** did someone go through all the trouble to figure out HOW to get it through???
Come on folks, 8pm is still 'prime time', and because of the ease of use of video game consoles the audience isn't always us so-called mature adults!!! Please! If our grasp of the English language is so bad that the only way we can express ourselves is through the use of 4 letter words that are known to be offensive then we are in SAD shape. Maybe it gives others a thrill to see that or say that, but it puts me in the position of not being able to play online because of the atmosphere degenerating to this stage, and that just sucks. Go online to show my kids some fun stuff and they get an education in a word they should not know about at their age. Gee thanks.
All I can say is that this made me appreciate and miss the folks from PSO World that I normally run into online, who have always been aware that my kids are watching, have been polite and honorable and even let them join in the fun by "talking" to them....my respect for you guys grows more all the time.

The person in question was pro'ly using a gameshark (yes, they have codes for defeating the filter http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_frown.gif ). They figure out stuff like this simply because they can.
It's just like the people that cheat in games like Counter-strike. How much fun can it be, to be so fast, people can't see you or make every shot you take, a head shot (instant kill). They do it because they can and that's it!
Unfortunatley, there is not much that can be done about it. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_frown.gif Just hope you play with good people and avoid staying in the lobbies for extended periods.
Ps. I had an incident this weekend (see rants section). Very disappointing.

Urgh. Didn't know that bit about the gameshark. Talk about showing your true colors.

I saw that bit - sometimes the pure adolescence - no wrong word, nothing wrong with adolescents in general - the pure immaturity is overwhelming. Like knowing how to swear in an atmosphere that was deliberately set up to avoid that, or creating chat symbols that are knowingly offensive in an atmosphere meant to be a cooperative community, makes you "big". Whatever. We ended up in a passworded game alone last night which is not why we go online. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_frown.gif
Haven't run into you online alot lately, the kids always ask if I'm going to play w/you when we get online. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_smile.gif I think they like saying "Aviend-HA" LOL!!! (They can't say my name, somehow it always comes out as "naive"...talk about a freudian slip! http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_wink.gif)

The stupid thing is just doing it in the first place. What is the point of swearng in the lobby through the filter? Does anyone give a cow's ASS about this?! As far as I am concerned, I don't think I would be getting much respect from defeating a filter. I wish there could be enough mods on the servers to at least control the flow... but such costs a fortune, and gaming companies are too close to their pennies to even consider this solution.
Therefore, to the one who did that Hitler smiley, and the one with the jerk-off smiley, and the thief who stole my Sinow Blades, and the GSer who emptied my inventory, and the idiot who felt like hacking the filter, and the ignorant looking for sex with a HUnewearl... WHY?!!

Mmm. I met some people who had used gamesharks to overcome the filter. This is why I'm moving more and more over to the JP servers, simply because the Japanese folk are friendier, and don't swear as much.
SaitoH... how would you feel about taking a set of Pan arms off my hands? I don't use them much, because I'm not really into knives and such. It may not be a good replacement for the S-beats, but... ^_^
Nynaeve, if you don't mind, how about a game sometime? ^_^ I'm always looking to play with new people from PSO World, so... ^_^
Hmm... you're in the US... I'm in UK... you're 5 or so hours behind, and... hmm... can you and SaitoH get online at 6pm or so your time? This will make it 11pm or 12am my time, which is fine by me (hopefully, I'll be awake ^_^http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_wink.gif.
Heh... who knows... I might have some present or two to give to your son's character, depending on what profession he is... ^_^

If I am online, I am mostly online early, like 5 or 6pm my time, so he can watch before bedtime...last night was late for me. I'd love to hook up sometime, can't tonight, promised the kids we'd see Spy Kids, but we can figure something out. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_smile.gif

Why do people smash things up, vandalise things or spray graffiti? It's a misguided mainly adolescent urge to rebel against society. Unless you manage to come up with a way to bring up kids that several thousand years of civilisation has failed to find, then kids will continue to swear in the lobby. As for adults, well being unable to communicate without swearing just shows a lack of intelligence and ability to communicate effectively.
S.
Sheesh why would they go throurgh all that trouble to swear online? The really isn't any good reason to be swearing online anyways.

Heh... well, that's for Saturday, probably. ^_^ For today, I can play. ^_^ Lyric the FOmarl managed to take down the big nasty Vol Opt all by herself at level 19 (30 minute battle! >_< ), and levelled up to level 20 now... so she's able to play on hard difficulty now. ^_^ Even though she'd be pounded by the monsters in the forest, I welcome a challenge. Magenta, do you have a similar level character that you can use, perhaps, since your main one is level 70+?
On the other hand, if you like, I can use IceBlink instead. ^_^ I can even use tech rules if you like! ^_^ Make the game more challenging. ^_^
Hmm... pm time today... how does 9pm? Too early? Or too late?

I agree. Plus, unfortunately for all decent folk out there, swearing has intergrated itself into the main speaking language now, becoming everyday words. Sad, but true. A lot of kids aren't even taught that swearing is a bad thing either...

LOL! It doesn't get any better, I'm "all grown up" now with kids and a career and my own house and *my* mom STILL gives me a hard time! "I'm trying to call you, and your line is busy, you play that silly game too much!!!!" But she should know better, she started me on my Atari 800 way back when and we've had video games ever since.
We're the "cool" house in the neighborhood, with 3 systems, started with the N64, which we got after our Sega Master System died - the I got a Playstation so I could play Tomb Raider - then I got my husband the Dreamcast for his bday (well, ok, it WAS free cause we signed up w/SegaNet...don't tell him...), and now that is the only thing we touch. All the kids come over and say to my kids how lucky they are that we bought them these...and my kids respond with "They're not OURS, they're my PARENTS!!!" They do have their GameBoys, but that doesn't stop them from fighting over my Palm Pilot. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_smile.gif Needless to say the neighbors think we're a bit off.... http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_wink.gif And just wait till this fall, ah what new system to buy....

Wow. That's a sobering and insightful comment. Alot of my non-gaming family (in-laws mostly) give me a hard time about this - "You LET them watch a game rated "T"? You're corrupting their minds, they're not teens yet!" and on and on...and yes, there are some they WILL not watch ever, like when we rented South Park type games, or Soul Reaver type things, but in general I try them all before I let them watch so no one can accuse me of not being careful in that manner....but this is something I hadn't thought of. By making this a family event and a family game, I guess I never realized we're encouraging the human interaction that they might miss if we let them play alone all the time or if we played alone...(although I do admit to leaving the room when my son pulls out Super Smash Brothers, MAN, what an ANNOYING game... http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_wink.gif)

wow... this thread was a morale booster. it's been a tough couple of weeks for me gamewise. It's starting to look like all the good gamers have been driven away by all the people trying to cheat the system. I've been playing in games with people who either don't talk at all or are extremely rude. I've had people snaking items from me as I'm about to pick them up... it's just been very disheartening. One month ago everyone seemed to be very cool, what the hell happened. Maybe I need to switch ships, I've been playing on Miranda for too long, I guess.

I deeply apologize about that, Nynaeve. Heh, cursing online is done by no "Gameshark". In fact, it's done quite easily. I happened to be following up on a story regarding new quests available in Japanese for Easter (which proved false). When I was online, I decided to throw a swear word out. (I was bored, and wanted to defeat the filter system for a second.) I throw out my obscenity and signed off. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_smile.gif Harmless fun, I'm sorry if your little 7 or 8 year old kid or whatever's emotions were crushed, dragged through the mud, and destroyed. I'll now hold a moment of silence for them . . . Okay, moment of silence up. Anyways, typing curse words while signed online in Japanese doesn't get a filter. Just thought you'd like to know how it's done. Peace out. I believe the character that did the cursing was my FOnewm named "Citan" on Puck 09. (New character, only level 53 now.)

However If they would have put a word block on in the game by CHOICE people wouldn't bother to get around it. I'm no sailor but I think its F'n (hehe) silly how much they blocked, they blocked the word SLAG I never even knew that was a cuss word.
And we should have the right to say screw, damn or maybe comment on how GAY db is for having so many sabers. Now don't get me wrong theres no reason to go around yelling 'F this F that all the live long F'n day' but if that's what I want to do then I should have had the choice.

Nothing politically correct about understanding that certain words are offensive and being able to express yourself without using them, is there??? It's not like you're "Language Challenged" or anything, as proven by your posts, you can express yourself just fine without.... http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_wink.gif
As for being given the choice, I agree and disagree at the same time - nothing worse than being forced to do things that go against the general idea of freedom...freedom of speech, etc...but unfortunately there are far too many that will abuse this "choice" and make the online world an uncomfortable, hostile one. Because there are those that would rather shock their fellow players than cooperate and build a community, these filters have been put in place - are they too stringent? Yeah, I have said that in this post and others. Should they be removed or made optional? I don't think so personally, not unless there are new servers put up that are "Swearing Allowed" type places, sort of like smoking/non-smoking choices in restaurants. Fine, go ahead and swear, but don't make me or my kids have to "listen" to it.

Thanks for the apology, one comment about the "harmless" bit - it wasn't. It's isn't. It is uncool and immature and FAR from a definition of fun. No, my kids weren't destroyed or crushed but your fun put us in a position of having to explain about yet another word that can "hurt people's feelings"...and explain why someone would say it if that is what it would cause.
Cool that you found some interesting things out about the system, just question where and when you chose to experiment with it.

http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_smile.gif At least those don't look like real words, I guess....they know about alot of the shortcuts we use like "lol" and "ty" and "brb", and probably wouldn't think twice about it. And to be fair, I am more than aware that part of the problem last night was my husband's and my reaction to the word, had we just kept our mouths shut the kids wouldn't have known it was "bad" - but then we risk them saying it out loud at the dinner table on Easter Sunday or something. *grin* "Where did you hear that?" I think people should be able to report when someone swears on-line, and that person should either be banned from the world of PSO, or they should be severly punished.

I think they did the filter thing all wrong. They should have an filter option that filters words coming to your system, not from it. You could turn it on or off, depending on wether or not you (or others watching) are offended by such things. That way people who want to swear can and only the people who want to listen will hear it. That'll cut out the whole alternate spelling thing too, because it won't be needed. I have to admit that I've been annoyed numerous times by the filter when I'm trying to explain that the weapons I'm using are called Hell Rippers.

Hi Nyneave,
Been hoping to get in a game with you for awhile, but due to the time zones, it?s a bit difficult (that and the fact that I don?t have your card/you?re usually in full games). Its good that you play with your kids, because there are worst things that happen on PSO than just swearing, such as ?harassment? (if you?re a female avatar) and the oh so creative (being sarcastic here) use of symbols. This is usually why I never stick around in the lobbies for long. But last night, for once, I had a great time in the lobby w/ my Fomarl. I was arguing (good-natured arguing) with another Fomarl and Fonewearl over the title of cutest (since Ryiko/Neojin left).
Have to say I?m quite impressed by your family. Its pretty rare for a family to play video games together the way yours does (you even had a Sega Master System).
?maybe find someone to help me transfer some stuff to my son's character?
I?m sure there are quite a few PSO Worlders who would be more than willing to help you do this. But a word of caution. Drop only a few at a time, and have the other person immediately pick them up and store it on their character or bank while they wait for you to re-log on. And, if you type and the words take a while to appear, don?t drop anything/pick up anything on the floor asap, as this is a sign that the servers are acting up (or when the servers are screwed up, don?t transfer, just wait another day) and you can be disconnected at anytime. (Happened to me and my friend 2x when he was transferring his stuff).
?His caracter is a HUcast (at least for today, he's made quite a few, but this one we're making him stick to...*grin*) He's SO angry at me that I transferred my RoboChao and some cool stuff to my husband's character instead of his! Ah, family fun at its best....?
Yes, a fellow Hucast. If would ever like to play with a fellow Hucast, let me know.http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_razz.gif
?I think they did the filter thing all wrong. They should have an filter option that filters words coming to your system, not from it. You could turn it on or off, depending on wether or not you (or others watching) are offended by such things. That way people who want to swear can and only the people who want to listen will hear it. That'll cut out the whole alternate spelling thing too, because it won't be needed.?
Everquest has something similar to this I believe. If I remember correctly, some EQ servers allow PK, while others (the care-bear servers) don?t allow this, allowing you to choose which type of server you want to be on. Maybe Sega should implement something like this.

Wow! I'm flattered, to be honest I play online so little that most of the time I feel like an idiot until I get into a game, like "gee, no one knows me, no one wants to play with me" (Amazing the scars high school can leave! LOL!) I plan on being online Sat. afternoon around 4 eastern time - don't know where you are, maybe we can set something up http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_smile.gif
Its good that you play with your kids, because there are worst things that happen on PSO than just swearing, such as ?harassment? (if you?re a female avatar) and the oh so creative (being sarcastic here) use of symbols.
Yeah, been there done that too. Although that seems to have stopped for me. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_smile.gif
Have to say I?m quite impressed by your family. Its pretty rare for a family to play video games together the way yours does (you even had a Sega Master System).
We had the Genesis after that one...and actually still have the Master System under our bed, don't think it works now though. LOL! My husband is the true game freak, this is the only one I have stuck to for so long - usually I start one, then he starts one, and he is so damn good at them that I lose interest, why go through all that to see the same movies I saw watching him.... http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_smile.gif PSO is different for some reason.
I?m sure there are quite a few PSO Worlders who would be more than willing to help you do this. But a word of caution. Drop only a few at a time, and have the other person immediately pick them up and store it on their character or bank while they wait for you to re-log on.
I saw this in action the other night, when another friend helped me give stuff to my husband's char. Scared me at first to see him pick it all up, but I trust this guy completely, and I figured it out quick enough http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_smile.gif

::warning comical swearing ahead::
Not that I swear much or anything, but . . Aragorn, so you think people should be banned for swearing online, eh? That's a bit motherfucking harsh. I mean, shit, that's fucking crazy. Fucking banning someone for just fucking cursing? People fucking curse the fuck wild and nutty all fucking day in the real fucking World. Isn't fucking PSO supposed to fucking be fucking realistic? I mean, fuck . . I fucking don't under-fucking-stand people these-fucking-days. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_smile.gif It's just a game . . shit . . It's not my motherfucking fault that Sega for-fucking-got to censor out curse words when set to a fucking different motherfucking bitch ass language fucking setting. :/
Lucky for me that my son is only 2 and he can't read yet!

Funny, still can?t get the ?quote? thing to work for me. LOL. Anyhow, I usually am on every weeknight (PST) from around 8:30 PM till about 11pm and on weekends, I?m on a lot. I pretty much hang out on Puck 9, but not in open games too much for various reasons, or on the Japanese servers (Europa or Io) from time to time.http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_smile.gifhttp://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_smile.gif

Well, I'll be there Saturday, Nynaeve. I am working but I'm going to bring my DC to work. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_smile.gif . I run a video game store, so I'll just take a couple hours break ta play with ya. I'm sure, my very capable subordinate's, will be able to handle things during my "PSO break". http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_razz.gif
One thing though, I will need an accurate time for which to start at. Can't waste too much time. ^_^

SOMEONE SET US UP THE TIME.
There, done, happy, etc etc. ^_^;
I have a little brother and sister that play and ask me why some of those words are not blanked out. If my dad found out he would go ape shit and not let them play anymore. So you wouldn't want little 9 and 11 year olds to stop playing their video games because of cussing now would you?

IceBlink the HUmar, last I checked, was level 78 or so.
Lyric the FOmarl is level 24.
Anyone have low-level characters around 20-30? Play on hard mode... ^_^

I plan on elaborating on this point in a separate post when I have the time, but I totally feel you guys on this one.
I play PSO to escape the misogyny, racism, bigotry, flat out ignorance, egalitarianism, and myopia of the "real world".
I've seen the swastika guys (there are several of them) and I've met people looking to "cyber".
I'm not going to day I don't swear, but I don't go out of my way to hack servers just so I can insult someone else using words that exhibit a total lack of imagination.
And as for hackers, they're just a bunch of technophelliacs with issues of insecurity and control problems. I speak without fear of contradiction when I say this about EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM. Again, this is a topic that I will address when I have the time (and care enough about) so I expect tons of nonsensical flames and arguments from the PSO hacking community, which is mostly comprised of 15-22 year old males who can't get any.
Anyway, most players out there seem to forget that our fellow players ARE INDEED real human beings, and should show some consideration to each other.
And if you're reading this and saying: "Screw you, I don't know you, will never meet you and I'll do what I want." Well, take comfort in the notion that at least you can log onto PSO and be a dick because you obviously don't have what it takes to cut it in the real world.

Hehheh, wait till you play with my Hucast. 4PM EST this Saturday, right? Let?s see that would be 1PM PST for me then. Cool, I should be up by that time after playing PSO till the wee hours today. Now which character to bring (most likely my Racaseal if I can level her up enough to use the S-Beat Blades)? http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_razz.gif
Well you must realise that when you play an online game 60% of the people you play with are 16 or under. And its pretty obvious that these kids are too inmature to handle an online game. I find it extremly disturbing that you had to have your kids view such a disgusting act of inmaturity. That is one of the reasons im against using GS for an Online game. It jsut isnt right and takes the fun out of it.

Mind you this is all in my own opion and reflecks on no one..
Ah who am I kidding BAWAHAHA
Anyway I remeber the old days when not so many people had computers and the users were far more limited.. back then you have to have at lest 3/4 a brain to use one..
ok ok 1/2 a brain.. sheesh
but with the fast growing market in anything tech now a days and windows and the internet.. we have here Mr. DUUUUHHH and here Mr. Geek.. Mr. Duh likes to think he/she is smart and makes an ass out of themslefs more often than not. Mr. Geek enjoys things/somtimes if the geeks is not a total snob or jerk/and the DUHH DUDE can be the same way.. but at lest some of us out there in that viod know a little if not more about what we are doing and how to do it..
There are just people out there that are too lazy of stuck up to play by any rules so they break them..
I myself have been guilty of this and found in thepast the game get's really boring if there's no risk or challege.. takes the fun out of the game..
I used to be bad about cussing myself.. it became a habit from being around others and before I knew it I was saying it without thinking.. a friend of mine online got on my case about it and I'm glasd he did,, been thinking before speaking this days,, no one in this world perfect far from it... but if one fails to learn from others and ones' own mistakes then we are truely hopeless and dumb.

speaking of Brain matter you are right 60% of the players in online games have yet to mature enough to have any.. but that's an issues of parenting and information that enters a young mind..

WOW, that's so cool...I prolly never woulda thought of playing the game as a family affair. Geez, I may want to borrow your brain if/when I have kids so I can get used to that sort of 'out of the box' thinking. ^_^
As an old history teacher told me oh so long ago, I swear like a truck driver. If I knew someone's whole family or, indeed, just a single 7- or 8-year old with decent ideals was watching and didn't appreciate my creative methods of getting around the filters, I would stop talking like that (by getting around the filters, I mean typing 'fuq' and 'shiit' and the like.) There is, I believe, a time and a place for swearing. Little children shouldn't be around at those times. I can still speak eloquently enough-I just choose to keep those words in my toolkit for when I might need them. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_biggrin.gif Of course, that also means I'll need to think about what I'm gonna do about that when I eventually HAVE kids... http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_confused.gif
Online, though, with the swearing, the cheating, the 'gangbang the character just 'cause it LOOKS like a girl,' it's all a load of immature stupidity. If you bothered to go buy a GAMING system, and you bought a GAME to play on it, WTF you doing going on and acting like you're head of the local branch of the Crips!?!?!? All this behaviour, along with the 'R U A Girl?' detailed in another topic, just kinda turns you off to trying to find people in the lobbies; this defeats the purpose of the lobbies in the first place... http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_frown.gif
I haven't checked out the PSO World server much, but I probably will in the future. The unofficial Penny Arcade server used to be Miranda 1&2, but I've never found Gabe or Tycho on there, and there have just been more and more in the way of grandstanding baka attacking from every side. I've also noticed that if you go further and further up the server list, the number of people behaving like this goes down, and the number of people you can find who just wanna play and have fun goes up, albeit at a much lower ratio.
Again, WOW. That's a cool family activity. I wouldn't mind playing with the 'PSO Mommy' sometime myself...just, if you could, let people know your kids are watching and give them a chance to realize that for the moment at least life is 'G' rated. I'm sure people will understand, and will either try and find a better word to use, or perhaps you can find some people and go to a different lobby so you won't have to expose them to that for a little longer.

Hopefully Sega will just change the filter to change incoming messages instead of outgoing ones, and make it optional. Also an ignore feature woudn't hurt. That's something I can see myself using.

Well there is no rule on PSO about language so people do what they want when they what. You can say the same thing about the people who steal your stuff but does sega do anything...nope. I didn't know about the gameshark but some people space their words out and vulgarity gets through. I understand about the cussing and all but when you got PSO you should have had some idea what you were getting into. Personally I have no idea what the point is talking like that on a video game and that's why I don't bother talking much when I go. If they want to make comments like that, go ahead. And if they use a gameshark, well it just takes away value from their game. Sure they will still play it but it won't be as cool as if you were playing normal.
