No. 2-1337 or whatever you want to call it sucks. It is different to conventional 1337. In normal 1337 you just use numbers instead of letters. The only exception is >< for x. However, 1337 has gone too far. When people start spelling n 11 its gone too far. Don't use like three symbols for one letter. Its confusing and annoying. The same way 1337 was at first. Now this. Stop it.

In future, do not use +s for ts
Do not use 9s for gs, i use 6 for G and I'm right because i said so
Do not use 1< for k, just don't http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_nono.gif

Pretty much any character in 1337 can be made with one or two symbols... it definitely is annoying when people use four symbols just to make "M". Then again, common day 1337 is rooted in annoyance anyways, so "mangled" versions don't really make much difference.

I think it's all bad. 1337, that is. I don't care if you're using 1337 "correctly" or not; it's all annoying to me.

The original concept wasn't all too annoying, it's just been skewed and mangled so much that any form of it now is seen as annoying, and it is. But within annoyance are varying levels, and some forms are more extreme than others. At least to a point.

As long as someone is annoyed by it there will be someone there to use it. Positives and negatives. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. In this case for every person who types gramatically correct there is someone who will type in 1337 or whatnot.

It's probably more like a 1-4 ratio. (1=correct, 4=language of the tard)

Using a 4 for an a or a 3 for an e isnt bad. But the 2-1337 is waay more annoying. In the beginning I just liked 1337 cos it was random, funny, and yes, rather stupid. 2-1337 isnt. Its just stupid, it lacks the original charm.

not sure what 2-|33t is, some branch off of leet obviously. As for K, just use /< two symbols. I don't know a way around // & // though. I always use 6 for g anyways.

Not like it really matters, but when I do use 1337 (in a joking manner, of course), I use AA or |v| for "M" and iv or IV for "N".

This is a strange topic indeed... I can't think of much to say about it... but perhaps my mind is just blanking out a lot recently... hmm.

No matter how many symbols people use for letters, leet will always be annoying.

So there is supposed to be a method to the madness??

I must say...that "leet" or whatever it is called is rather annoying, but I had no idea there were actual rules and stuff! http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

BTW...when everyone and their mother says "pwned"...is that related to the "leet" talk....or is it just another way that people have found to aggravate me? http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

the round par of the p is like an o, so in reality it's owned, though o is gernerally 0 in leet.

lol....yeah....I figured that much....it just seems like a typo to me....not formulaic...

I bet thats how that originated...some guy accidently hit the 'p' instead of 'o' and was like..."oops...I meant to do that" http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

Incorrect. Believe it or not, l33t was born out of necessity. IRC services and law enforcement began using monitoring software to find people discussing pirated software and illegal hacks. By replacing letters with numbers, pirates and hackers could go on making deals and chatting about their methods and activities, without the monitoring software taking notice.

There's also another style of l33t that is considerably more difficult to type. I'd give an example, but it makes extensive use of the extended character set, so the majority of it won't show up on PSO World's forums.

EDIT:
Personally, what bothers me, is when people think that abbrieviating a 3 letter word will make them type faster, or even better. The absolute dumbest thing I have ever personally seen was, "n-e". Seriously, what effort is being saved there?
I mean... Even if some retarded 12 year old starts typing in l33t because it is "more cooler" than typing normally, at least he's putting in some damn effort. It's people that can't spell the word "you" that I'm more worried about.

He's right. But then gaming circles adopted it for playing the online all text games. That led to a ton of translations being released. That's why you see it so much today.

Actually, the p is a typo. P and O are right next to eachother on your keyboard. Basically, to be "pwned" is more of an insult than being "owned" because if you're "pwned" then you got owned by someone who's too inept to even type a three-letter word right.

but it's no longer done as a typo, it's on purpose.

I'm well aware that "leet" was first created with intelligence in order to bypass certain word search security measures, etc. I'm talking about current day "leet" as most people know it now. Attempts to be cool by ignoring proper language. By "mangled" versions I mean more of the cycle "leet" has entered. Some people make fun of it, exaggerate it, and then others take it as the norm. Then some make fun of that, exaggerate it, and then more people take THAT as the norm. Thus the cycle of mangled versions.

As for the origins of "pwn", from what I had heard there was a Warcraft scenario that had typoed on the word "own". As clever little gamers do, some decided to adopt it as part of their inside joke along with "All your base" and other "classics".
