View Full Version : Why swear?

Skuda

Why people swear, mostly in frustraion or to sound tough or "Cool". Why not some up with your own phrase or word when your angry. some people say cracker, shoot, ect. Be origonal. Swearing most of the time lowers your people proception of you and can lead to people putting you is bad stereo-types. perhaps most of us are just a clones of the MTV generation.

I swear to empty myself of frusrtation. Let's face it, sayng "aw shoot" doesn't have the same curative effects as "FUCK!"

Without swear words, i would have to resort to smashing things. It is actually quite healthy.

On the internet, I never swear as I like to get flames across without the usage of such words. It can sometimes help you in a debate to make the oposite person look stupid.

Because...um I don't know why either. Evertone at school swears and the teachers don't care. This si most suprising considering I'm in the 7th grade, and they didn't care in 6 th grade either. I've never seen the point to it. It makes you soung arragent and idoitic. Then people don't use the right meanings for the swear words either. Poop should not be called holy. Arse(real word) mean donkey not bum! Why can't you just say bum or butt, or even fanny. Swearing at every little such as an enemy hits you is just stupid, why not say oh well and move on with your life. Wait alot of you crazy folk on pso world have little or no life. you have to play games are harrass children with porn chat symbols.

I went to a magnet school in the city (i'm in suburbs) and all the teachers swore at the students. Even black teachers where calling black student negroe bitches...http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_disapprove.gif

Later on i left that school, then a few months later a stabbing occured. Now this is just rediculous. Here's why:

1. You have to walk through metal detectors.

2. your bookbags are searched

3. Cameras are at every corner

5. the stabbing occured with a metal poket knife durring lunch

Another thing about that school, people later found out a group of kids where bullying others by holding them down in the bathroom and ramming pencils up there butt. Glad i left that place, though it was more because i had to get up at 5:00am in the morning to get ready for a long bus drive, and sometimes didn't get back till 6:00pm.

Why cuss? Because to me it's not cussing. These "Bad" words have been around for so long, in our media, culture, and homes.. that really they're just another form of speach as far as I'm concerned. Alot of times they're used as adjectives. Saying something is "REALLY" big - just doesn't hold the same conveyance of it's actual size as saying "That's fucking huge" Ya know?

I agree that over-using cuss words can get annoying or be degrading to your self-image.. but sometimes you just have to cuss.

I agree. This is very true, and it's why most swear words have sharp, "out of the ordinary" sound structures.

However, swearing needlessly (ex. saying "I found Monomates and shit" instead of "I found Monomates and stuff") is just stupid. Usually, people outgrow the whole 'swearing as a part of everyday conversation' thing as an adult. If an adult is still doing it, they either have a poor vocabulary, low intelligence, or both. It's sad, really.

Not true, I swear all the time. It's part of my dialect. I grew up near Liverpool and well, old habits are hard to break.

I had forgotten about the English prediliction for swearing. It's not even usually a case of swearing to swear, it's simply that what is said at that point in time in the conversation happens to be a swear word.

I am so use to swearing, I don't even think twice about doing it. Infact when talking to higher authority figures I find it really hard no to fuckin swear, oops. Similar to Shimarisu I've grew up in places where people say "fuck" "shit" and "cunt" in every sentence. When people in my area cant think, instead of saying ummmm, they say fucking.

People say swearing is a sign of not being able to express yourself in an "appropriate manor". Maybe thats what it is, I dunno.

Also, swear words are still, I suppose, adjectives and no offence should be took by ANYBODY by someone using them.

Sorry for swearing in my post by the way.(If anyone is so sensitive to take offence)

I knew this girl that would get on people for swearing because "it was against her religion," but she herself had sworn several times.

Now, I'm a hard-core Christian, but I don't get on people for swearing. There's a lot worse things to worry about, like genocide or culturing anthrax to kill off the human race. Besides, I feel worrying about such things as swearing is a bit of a waste of time (mainly because people are going to keep doing it anyways), but, whatever. I DO to get on people's cases when every other word out of their mouths is "fuck", which tends to happen a lot these days, or when they swear a lot with little kids around, but that's just my overbearingly righteous tendencies showing.

And above all, hypocrites like the girl mentioned in the above post piss me off the most >:|

I can only say that there are 3 classes of evilness in swearing (much like drugs)

Class C's - include words like nob, hell and bollocks

Class B's - are your basic crap, shit, piss and the apparently worst word u can say fuck.

Class A's - The instant ban words. Words that u should never say in an offensive manner. Class A's include various illness, racist terms and of coarse the real worst word **** (hint: girls hate this one)

Anyway to form the most abusive sentences involves linking 3-4 class C's with 2-3 class B's around a big class A finish.

i had an interesting discussion with my friend yesterday.

We were standing outside my house, and a skateboarder rolled by. He tried to do something on the curb, but instead fell face first onto the road.

Friend- "Fuck, eh?"
Me- "Fuck" (i nodded, and it was toned like "yeah")

It works that way too, but my main reference was too the fact that people have to use a swear as every other word. I accept swearing in general, but when people only swear because of empowerment issues..........

Hmmm, this is ironic. Don't you generalize also on your past threads. Yet, here you are saying not to do so?!?

Fucking doesn't make sense.

Anyways, saying bad words is as easy as breathing. Just happens. And always will happen. It is not even a conscious effort anymore... almost like a reflex. Cut your finger: "Fuck, this shit hurts". Someone cuts in front of your in traffic: "Fucking moron, what the hell are you doing...". Bored: "God, Im fucking bored out of my mind...". Funny things: "HA HA HA That was fucking hilarious". On and on it goes...

So for example "Fuck" is to us like what "Smurf" was to the Smurfs, part of our language. "This pie is smurfy delicous" us "This pie is fucking great" LOL.

The F-Bomb is such a crude adjective and verb. bloody works just as well and makes you sound a little more intelligent.

Ignaciando

I second that. "Bloody" (or "Sangriento", used primarily in "Sangriento infierno" (bloody hell), when speaking around spanish-speakers, which is a common occurence in Northern Virginia), has become part of my every day speech.

I have my own swear words, words which aren't particularly obscene, but get my message across, and can sometimes even be funny.

*Bangs toe on stair post*

*SHABBAH!!*

Me and my friends also often relate to 'Ken' in conversation - E.g. Instead of saying something's *Shit*, we just say 'dodgy as Ken'. Ken can be used for anything!

*Mate walks into lampost*

*God, you're as thick as Ken!*

I also evidently have no objections to religion-related obscenities, and am one of them people that don't care if other people have objections because they should all be like me http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif
