View Full Version : Rent

It had to happen sooner or later but I've had enough and gonna get my own place.
The reason?
My parents and the rent I pay them.

For years I'd been paying 80 quid a month (20 a week roughly) for general keep.
Thing is my sister only payed half of that and spent just as much time at home as me, worked just as much as me, earnt just as much as me and borrowed money off them, never paying it back and generally got away with everything.
But they were constantly on my back for money I owed them despite this, never letting it go when I'd borrowed off them. But still, I kept my mouth shut and bit my lip.

Well recently I got a full time job and my parents actually did my a favour by cutting my monthly rent to 50 quid (This lasted for oh one month. Last month in fact. more on that in a minute.) due to the fact that I'm now barely at home any more, only the occasional evening due to a lot of work and my social life.
Suddenly this evening, my mum anounces to me that the rent has gone up to 100! Why the hell should I have to pay that!? My sisters rent remains pretty much unchanged yet mine has gone up considerably! Double! Why the hell has my rent gone from 50 to 100 in a matter of one month!?
It's gone up 20 quid from when I was home more often.
Hell, I thought they were joking when they they told me.

Now I love my parents and all, but that is seriousely just taking advantage. I'm also in considerable debt (long story) on top of this, working my ass off to pay it off.
Yet my sisters rent remains at now 50. I only really use the house for sleep, that's about it.

So screw it, I'd rather pay just a little more for my own place.

A bit of a pointless rant, but I needed to get it off my chest.

WTF? I live in an expensive area and still only pay £500 ($800) a month for a one bedroom apartment. My parents think that's crazy shit and act like I'm rich. My rent is way more than their mortgage. Last place I lived in was £200 a month. Where the hell are you from, some major upper class suberb? And why are your parents forcing you to pay them at all? I lived with my parents til I was 21 and never paid shit, though my dad beat me at least once a week which was why I moved out. Although I think charging for the keep of your kids is even more unreasonable than what my parents did.

You have my support. GET THE HELL OUT OF THERE! DO NOT CHANGE YOUR MIND, DO IT RIGHT NOW!

GET OUT!!! You have the ability and DO IT BEFORE IT DRIVES YOU CRAZY!

... If I have a job and money I'll move out and don't have to live with this fukking jerk bro. :/

Did you ask them why they are raising your rent and not your sis's? Favouring?

Did you ask your parents why you have to pay more, and also why your sister did'nt get an increase as well?

My brother and I still live at home and pay $20 a week which goes towards grocceries, and we pay for our own bills that we run up in the house(phone, cable, etc). We're just glad to live at home since I doubt either of us could stand living in town or in the local developments, since we're just used to having 12 acres of wooded area of our own to go out and about in. =

Good luck with finding a nice place though, I hope it works out for you.

Do you have a spare room going? http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_lol.gif

As for finding out why my sister pays less, I don't think I'll find out anytime soon.
My parents and I aren't on speaking terms at the moment.

I would discuss this unfair treatment that you are receiving over your sister. Sure, you should be greatful. But that is just bullcrap.

My bro has to pay about $1000 for his rent. His apartment kicks ass though. Nice locale too. I can't say that I've been in your situation though, seeing as I'm still in high school (I wish it would end!).

your parents make you pay to live with them?! I'm sorry, but that just ain't right. If I could, I'de from a mob and be down there in a heartbeat. Now i could understand something like Abdur's situation, but considering you have a sister that does just as much, yet still has to pay less, shows the unfairness in it. If there is one thing i hate in this world is favoritism when it comes to kids. Mostly because my sibling have it, or have had it, I've had it once, and then it went away when my second sister was born. But before that, my first sister was favored by someone else anyways. (I had my step-grandma and she had my step-mom, in no way related)

Just wondering, what is the conversion from a quid to a dollar.

On topic: Before I was to leave for the military I was paying 300$ a month to live in my bedroom. So, how much is that in quid or whatever you called it?

I don't pay anything now that I don't have a job and go to school.

My parents never made me pay rent.. I moved out as soon as I graduated.. I never even looked back.. sure I go home every now and then.. But I have no intention of ever returning..

Now back on the subject.. I dong know how old you are, but this partent house and rent thing just might be a sign that you need to get your own place.. just a thought.. Why are your parents charging you rent??.. I thought about my parents maybe trying something like that when I got older.. Then I asked my self.. "Which would be better, living in my parents house with a small amount of rent, or living on my on with a large amount of rent."

Not sure of the exact conversion, but off the top of my head, I'd say your paying about 180-200 pound! Dude! I thought I had it bad. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

As for people asking how old I am, I'm 20.
It's quite common (In this country at least) for people still at home (and my age) to pay some sort of rent. So I have no real problem with that.
Paying rent is not the real issue, just the fact that it doubled suddnely for no reason and the whole unfairness to it.

Well I've talked to my mother and discussed the whole palarver (Ecspecially about my sister) and my mum has agreed that it was unfair, so I'm now back to paying 50.
Heck, I'd be happy to still be paying 80.

But I'm still going to find my own place. It's about time anyway. I'm old enough.

Oh no, no, no!
It's not university, it's college.
After school I took a year out.
I then went to college for two years but messed up on the second.
Thing is, over here in the Uk, once you hit 19 you have to start paying for college.
So I narrowly missed it. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif Serves me right for being a lazy bastard I guess. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_lol.gif

And seeing as I'm in debt, It's gonna take a year or so to get rid of that fully, and then another year or so to save up for college fees! (Let alone uni...)
But anywho, that's all my own fault and nothing to do with my parents, so I don't expect them (or want them) to help me pay for it all. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Back on topic.

Iy all depends on where you go to get your place. Some of the Housing people were wanting to charge me and my mates 64pounds a week for really rubbish properties. In the end i went to a place called 'Club Easy', part of 'APS' or something. They do really good deals for students, and seieng as i got a house with 6 other people.

Oh, and the Doller to Pound thing, the doller is roughly half of a pound. So 300 Dollers would be 150pounds, roughly. Its not an exact estimate, and may be off by a few, but its the easiest way to do it.

your parents are trying to get you to move out.. period.. they think you have found a nice job now and are starting to cut the embilical cord.. its time to move out and by increasing the rent it sort of makes you realize that.. ull have much more fun in your own apt.. wild and crazy parties with strippers and they can even stay the night!! http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_yes.gif
good luck
