To set a crooked piece straight you need to hammer on the joint of the two crooked pieces.. look at the demo play, it will show you how to fix them.

i found lady 8 to be surprisingly easy. lady 7 was a bitch, but lady 8, pah, childs play.

so navi, when you finally get past lady 7, you should find lady 8 a breeze (hopefully :S)

oh, and as to the shift + leg thingy:

on the title screen, you'll see a red high heeled shoe; hold shift and click the shoe to select the level you want to start at.
