View Full Version : FanArt: Finish it or not? You Decide

Ok a lot of my drawings in photoshop take a very long time to do.

That is why you don't see too many of them. Also, I don't usually EVER EVER put up something that's not done. (because if it's not done then no one will think it is good?) But this one has *elements* which are mostly-complete. However, this one has kind of...gotten stalled for a while. Mostly because I feel some of the elements aren't up to par, and I'm not sure how to fix them. Also, it's dragged on for some time, and I got kind of tired of it. So I look to the opinions of the board on whether to press on with it, or just move on to some other pic.

As you can see, it's not finished:
1. Sky just has kind of 'grounding layer' in it
2. There's no splash where the sword picked up water
3. Other leg-bottom is missing
4. Shoreline is eh
5. Distance isn't set w/effect yet (meaning, it doesn't look distant!)
6. Shoreline waves need enhancement
7. Some of the shading is missing

However I have some problems with what is supposed to be finished:
1. Paint-job on Jet kind of flat...
2. Water-splash that DOES exist perhaps plasticy?
3. Sort of mad at Pshp because there is no real 'metal-gritty look' to the LastSurvivor and I can't find a brush that does it so it's shiny.
4. It just looks...un-polished or something I don't know

So, what should I do? Finish it and post it up as a real fan-art, or skip the rest of the work? Vote or comment...I only did this post because I'm feeling stuck. And don't bash it. (rrgh constructive stuff) I don't feel like becoming un-inspired for 1 month like I did the last time I put something up and it got panned.

yes, i think you should finish it if you want to. it is a genuinely good art, and it is definately worth the effort.

Eeep! http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_eek.gif Awesomeness! I say you should finish this, then move on to a pic of K'Tani!! heh

Seriously, as for what needs to be done:

Do finish the sky...the horizon line anyway. No need to add much more to the sky itself tho, that could draw the veiwer's eye away from the focal point, which is Jet.

The water and splashes are awesome, great job!

Do add Jet's other leg, since the right one is visible, the eye expects to see the other one too http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

The Last Survivor is fine, looks just like it does in-game (aside from being short) I'd say leave it alone.

Um, that's it. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

I'd suggest shading him like on a really sunny day - stark shadows (don't forget cast shadows) with a blueish tint (since the sunlight is slightly yellow)...

The water needs some glitter aswell - really white, not blended highlights reflecting the sun.

As a finishing touch, you can make the water reflect onto him from below (you know, that pattern). It would be heavenly!

Nice work so far anyway.

It looks great! a wee bit of cunstructive critacism though, the last survivor ( I hope that's what it is, cuz I'm not wearing my glasses) looks a little small, and the hands look a little...warped?

Finish it! http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif
Despite all the problems you have mentioned above, I'd say finish it. Because ... well, giving up in the middle is BAD!

Go go go!

You must finish it! Or spend the rest of your life waking up and find a large knot on your head and a wooden staff beside your dresser!

Oh, and, at least put in the other leg. Without it, it kind of looks...out of place? (need to update vocab)

Thanks for the responses everyone!

It looks like I'll have to finish it now...;P
As for the LastSurvivor, it looks shorter then normal because it's supposed to be in perspective. Like, it's pointed away from the screen into the picture, and foreshortening is going on. (As you can see, the whole 'bottom' part of the hilt is visible to you) however, if it is coming into question at all, then there's something wrong with the perspective to begin with.

SabZero...unfortunatly, I really like your water-reflection idea. It is unfortunate because I don't think it will be easy to do and carry off looking good at all. It is 'really liked' because it would make it something really cool to see if it DID work. So now I gotta try.

Well, it looks like back to work on it then for me, this poll was very helpful.

You can do the reflection part on a new layer. Dabble some white lines in a pattern (or get a pattern image from the web), and play with modes (maybe strong light'll work) and/or opacity http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif

Hey, it's just the glace on top, you don't have to do it http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif But I reckon you have it in you http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif
