This is a character I designed to try and get a scholarship... Because I am going into Video Game Art/Design, the scholarship thingie wants me to design a game. His name is Nezahualcoyotl (the game's theme is Aztec mythology), but usually he's just called Coyotl. I know he doesn't look Aztec, but that's because the game takes place in an alternate reality. *G* I posted the original sketch of this with my doodles from Cancun.
Coyotl is a Wind God, and he fights demons with throwing blades and daggers. His elemental partner's name is Ehecatl, and she's one of the next on my list to draw concepts for. *laughs* His hair didn't start out that long... When I drew my first sketches of him, he started out with just the short, shaggy part on top, and the braid. But I felt the design was missing something, and added a long ponytail. I thought about giving him purple hair, but I decided against it, since I only have one purple marker (they only make one frickin' shade! *growls*), so I wouldn't have been able to shade his hair if I had.
This was done in .01 Pigma Micron pen (brown and black), and my Prisma Colour markers. And in the original picture, his outfit is tinted purple. Of course, my scanner decided not to bother scanning the purple hue. *growls*
EDIT: I'll post the other character concepts as I finish them. The next one will be the Water Lady, Chicomecohuatl (who is basically a mage... A lot of you *ahem* males out there will like her, because she is dressed in a rather skimpy white priestess outfit...), because I already have her sketch done.

Hope you get the scholarship. I would buy a game that you helped create. Good luck with it.
Edit: maybe I can help "sway" the judges opinions *Walks off with katana in hand*
Edit: *Reads Jade's next post* !!!, that much? Maybe I should try more on the MEAP tests or else I might not be able to go to Digipen *sobs and notices everyone is staring* ...So Ian likes Rati.

Yes, I hope I get it too... Let's put it this way... If it costs me $87,000 to go to that art school (with housing), I can't go unless I get that scholarship (they give away three... Two for half tuition paid, and one that pays all your tuition).
Thank you so much for the positive feedback. Now, let's all hope the scholarship judges like it as much as you! http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

This looks really good, Jade. And listen, I hope that when you go to college, you still keep posting on this site. And the first time you work on a game, be sure to post the name of it here so that we can purchase it.
I say this because I have absolute faith in you. Even if you don't get this scholarship (which I'm sure you will), keep it up. With your potential, your efforts will not go unrewarded.
Best of luck!!!

Really nice. Sorry, but could you maybe detail the project a bit more? Do you have to design the whole game idea, or just character designs and a plotline? Either way, it's really good.
Would you stab me if I said that maybe the costume is a little more basic than I would expect?

You'll have to forgive my ignorance but his clothing does not appear to be very aztec influenced (as far as popular culture depicts anyway).
He reminds me more of a 17th century pirate (think vise from Skies of arcadia).
But that does not make the picture any less good mind you.
I take it that the game is 3rd person action/adventure?

Okay. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif All the positive things that people have said here I second. Now, onto something slightly different.
My problem with this character is he is way too plain on the colours side. Aside from all the belts and stuff, his underneath shirt is plain and really boring. It's white, and it doesn't have anything on it. It doesn't really catch your eye on a first look, which you do want people to, right? http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif
So... I'd love to see you adding some more details to the white shirt/pants underneath, you said it is Aztec right? So maybe a bit of Aztec themed designs on the edge of the collars would be nice?
I also feel that white isn't the best colour for it, so maybe you can consider adding a little more colour to it... I don't know, cream? light green? ..
All suggestions, of course. But I figure you might want a different opinion. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif
edit: Sen sen just said simple may be the way to go. ... Well.. maybe just the colour of the shirt?

Coyotl took me a couple hours to sketch out, then ink and colour.
Um... Someone wanted to know more about the scholarship thingie... Basically, I have to get a ton of letters of recommendation, then turn in a game design - plot, settings and characters.
And about Coyotl not looking Aztec... (Those of you who could care less/aren't curious can skip this long explanation...)
The game takes place a loooong time in the future, after the world is destroyed. The whole thing behind that is that the Aztecs/Maya believed that the world has been destroyed over and over again. Every time the world is destroyed and reborn, it's called a Sun. (For the curious, we're in the Fifth Sun now. It COULD end on December 23, 2012.) The storyline takes place two Suns into the future, in the Seventh Sun.
In the world of Seventh Sun (the game concept's title), it was not the white Europeans who conquered the Aztecs, but the other way around. The major powers in this world are the Aztecs and Japanese. The Europeans are a minor power, and are in the ethnic minority, but a lot of people have a bit of European ancestry. Coyotl has an Aztec name, but he is actually nobility from a small European tribe (thus the brown hair, light skin, and not really Aztec clothing).
I'll try and go a bit more into detail on the rest of the characters when I post them, but I'm gonna go ahead and do Chicomecohuatl's description now.
She's a more Aztec looking girl, although her black hair readily accepts dye, and she dyes it blue. She always wears white or blue. Chico is not nobility, but she is from a higher class, so she has a lot of jewelry and such.

Very nice character design though being somewhat a martial artist in a way, all those knives located around his body may hinder his movements (it would be nice to move them to the area where there isn't much flexibility (like in the middle of the upper arm and lower arm). Other than that it looks pretty cool.

I'm not sure whether it would be turn based or real time... There're a lot of characters, so I haven't decided yet whether the player would pick one to play for the entire game, be able to switch through them, or play them all like in Fire Emblem. I'll need to decide that soon. *G*
Chico's picture should be up tonight... I decided she looked to cute in the drawing I had of her, so I did another one, where she looks a bit more mature and seductive.
A brief list of characters (just the "good guys"): Xalaquia, Tulankin, Nezahualcoyotl, Ehecatl, Chicomecohuatl, Cautemoc, Chalchihuitlicue, Centeotl, Xochiyayotl, Xochiquetzal, Ipalnemohuani, Mictlantecutli (woot, lord of hell! Hehe, and he IS a good guy!)...
If anyone actually CARES about the plotline/idea, my sister's writing a novelized version of it.

Couldn't the various users of PSOW that have asked for a drawing be considered employers? Yeah, I know. They couldn't.
Are these judges going to call your teachers/employer because I'm sure Hikara and myself could "act". Yeah, your right. No.
Anyways, about this game: you just have to write out everything right? Um, say its real-time. Unless you actually have to create it then turn-based.

My un-qualified two cents:
Great design (I don't mind the coloring too much, but I see Navi's point), but the knife thing bothers me too. It seems that if he tried to kick, he would bleed to death (and forget jumping... ouch!).
Then again, if he's all herioc, it doesn't matter! Heroes have a way around those kinds of things.
And the girlish-ness (slight) might attract the Final Fantasy crowd.

I may have misunderstood, but it sounds like LadyJade just has to turn in the equivalent of a design document, and doesn't have to actually create the game.

However, everyone seems to be commenting about the kunai that he has... They're placed on belts where they are because that's where he WOULDN'T hurt himself. Obviously you've never had stuff like that strapped to you before. *G* And about his girly-ness... Coyotl is supposed to be a pretty-boy. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif And you guys know me - I draw almost all guys as bishounens. *evil grin* Don't worry though, Mictlantecutli and Cautemoc definitely aren't going to be as girly, and I doubt that I'll draw Tulankin as a bishounen either. Ipalnemohuani on the other hand... *G* The Lord of Heaven just cries out to be a pretty-boy, don'cha think?
And I'm taking advantage of Navi's idea to put some Aztec-y designs around the collar of his shirt... Just because he doesn't have much colour. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif But first, I need to get a book with photos of Aztec art, since I only have a few books on the Maya (with only black and white photos).

coool game art and design... i almost went to college for that but i picked animation in stead... anyway on to the critique... if your using aztec culture you should incorporate more of it into his outfit... maybe give him a vest with cool designs on it and some cool looking aztec tattoos , you should also think about researching the types of weapon styles they created... it might bring a more ethnic look to your characters http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif.... well thats all i got , but as far as the construction goes its top notch as usual. keep it up and you will be making games in no time. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Ah, nice to see someone else whos going into a Games Design course. Im currantly halfway through my first year on Games Design, and im only just starting to move onto actual Games Design and producing a games design. For me, coming up with the Game's idea/plot and stuff is easy, trying to draw out character designs is the hardest part.
I really like your picture, its well designed, well drawn and well coloured. He does seem to be a bit plain though, maybe an Aztec style pattern could be added to his clothes somewhere, that would add a little more colour to him and make him stand out more. If i read your post right you said your were going to do another design for him? I would put both into your design idea, then youve got several different styles to fall back on. If you look at most game concepts they will have several different designs per character and the final one will be decided on closer to production, so a variety of designs is quite handy.
Cant wait to see some more of your designs. Maybe ill post some of my Games Design stuff when im further ahead with it.
Good Luck.

Well, I for one am impressed. And I like the bishonen look, anyway. ^_- Wish the scanner hadn't eaten the shirt color, but yeah, some designs or something on the clothing would be nice, anyway, something to catch the eye (well...besides the throwing blades. Naked, sharp steel is always an eye-catcher. ^_^).
About the placement of the various blades--while I wouldn't presume to debate what would or wouldn't stick where (being completely incapable of even performing the movements in question without injuring myself--trying it with sharp objects, forget it!), I find it interesting that his hand-to-hand weapons are on the ankles, the least accessible place to reach, while his throwing blades are all within an easy motion to grasp. It immediately makes me presume that the style of fighting (whether action-based or not) is kind of reminiscent of Shinobi III (Genesis)--almost entirely throwing weapons, with the daggers reserved for last-ditch close work. Is that the case?
ladyjaderiver
03-09-2004, 02:03 PM
Yes, you're right. His primary weapons are the throwing blades. I believe he, and his partner Ehecatl, work from horseback, or from a distance. Both use their daggers only as a last resort (a very last resort which they seldom need, as they are both very fast).
*sigh* And nobody seems to have listened much... So...
COYOTL IS NOT AN ACTUAL AZTEC! HE IS NOBILITY FROM A SMALL EUROPEAN TRIBE! THE GAME TAKES PLACE IN AN AZTEC DOMINATED WORLD, BUT THE SMALL TRIBES STILL HOLD ON TO THEIR OWN CULTURES!
However, that didn't stop me from adding a cute little ribbon of geometric swirls around the collar of his shirt. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif I'll scan that tomorrow... Too excited to do anything today...

Mirza and Lindsey are people you don't know
The wigs suck (at least compared to the ones in the show), but we tried our best. Besides, the costumes are four years old, or will be this Halloween.
But the show was absolutely amazing, as always. However, now Mirza and I are trying to figure out why more guys don't go to the show...I mean, we kinda figured guys would want to go see girls dance around in spandex cat suits, but we don't know any guys (except one) that have ever gone or wanted to go. It's a mystery. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

LOL. The girl in the pink skirt is Lindsey, and she has a boyfriend at the moment.
And what do you mean by "suits?" The costumes in the show are unitards made out of this really neat material called milliskin (ours are poly/cotton/spandex blends). The male costumes (to answer the question someone asked) fit looser than the female costumes (in most cases), and have longer arm- and leg-warmers on them.

I'm only a gentlmen in RL. Adults seem to love me but the teens my age are just like "shrug." The only time I'm ever perverted is on this place, and when i'm with my closest friends. I guess it has to do with looseness, cause my friends are my friends no matter how i act or what i do. Though such loyalty comes at a price of making only 5 friends in your life, 3 of which are all brothers (two twins that are my age and one older one.)

Yes, her head does look a bit big, but that's an illusion created by her hairstyle... And because I usually don't draw characters with their hair pulled out of their faces.
And her legs're fine... I drew them out fully before I drew on her skirt. (I almost always do that for characters with robes/skirts.) That, too, is an illusion, created by the way her skirt is "ruffled".
And I don't see what's wrong with her breasts, either, unless you're meaning that she doesn't have huge ones.

part of it is the roundness of the left one compared to the right. Another thing, they look like they're "looking" 90degrees apart. One looks like it's facing the screen, while the other is looking off the side of the paper.

The only think I have a suggestion about is her shoes, may I suggest some sandel type shoes? Reason being she seems very cool in her outfit, and it is a tad odd to see her wearing fully toe-covered shoes. So.. I'd say some toes to match the rest of her outfit.
And, are those just strings on her dress and her wrists? On her wrist for a bit more impact I'd suggest a bit more ... eye catching type of accesaries. Like.. maybe a tad thicker?

no, for that far down south, her skin ought to be darker. And asianic eyes don't bode to well with it either.

I can't make her skin darker... I would've, like I did in my coloured pencil piccie of her for AP Drawing, but I only have a few skin tones (mostly light ones), and I can't afford to buy more at the moment. So, Chico has light skin. Her skin would become too red/orange if I tried to make it darker with the skin tones I have.
Asiatic eyes? Just because they're big? That's just my style of drawing, I'm afraid. Besides, ever see Central American carvings? A lot of them look Asiatic, or African, even though the peoples of Central America had no contact with either (although the Asian contact thing is under debate... but nevermind. *G*).

At least you got the realism of the rings on her arms cool. I like how the one on her left arm is on her forearm muscles and not her wrists...that would've thrown gravity off, there.
I just suggest that that line extending her pinky on her left hand shrink a little. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime2.gif We already know it's a palm there and what angle its supposed to be because of the illustration given off from the thumb.

Just remember, when you're making a game design, and you're thinking of making it into a game, don't make a costume that has complicated computer codes. Like if you wanted clothes to realistic (i.e. wrinkles, dirty sometimes etc.), it might be complicated (I'm not exactly an expert http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime2.gif).
Great characters, and I hope you get that scholarship.
The only prob I have is that the names are kinda long. But if they're named after Aztec people, it be fine with me.
Then again, I'm not a judge(I wish).
ladyjaderiver
03-13-2004, 09:38 PM
Yeah, they are named after Aztec/Maya people or Gods... Nezahualcoyotl was an Aztec King, and Chicomecohuatl was a Goddess (I forget what she was Goddess of), and her name means "the Seven Serpents". Most of the names are shortened for praticaly purposes (Xala, Chico, Coyotl, Chalchi, Mictlan, Tulan, etc).

Bleh, need to watch the History channel some more. Any ways, when you say game desing, to you mean how the game is going to look, or the plot line? Seeing as the Maya came before the Aztecatl, the Maya used rubber first. And both of those tribes used cacao beans, but not as food. They used the beans as currency. The extremely wealthy could have it made into a drink similar to hot chocolate (hehe, drinking money - literally!).
And I haven't written the story - yet. I'm working on it, but it's taking a long time. The idea has been running around in my head (along with Teyolia, Ipalnemohuani, Tulankin, Chicomecohuatl, and Cautemoc) for about six years, but I've never written a word of it. I always feel like I'm going to screw it up and ruin it if I write it down.
But that's good for Jade because it means she can use the idea for her game design. Besides, she's one of the people that helped me with it over the years, so she has some right to use it. Hell, she's been drawing the characters for years now.

Some constructive feedback from my part. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif
I don't know what style you are going for, manga, realistic or whatever, so some of this may be irrelevant to you.
This is not to be mean/negative, I personally love your characters, but if you want to improve even more, here are my thoughts.
(This may seem like nitpicking)
Also, if I am mistaken in any of my notes, I apologize.
Nezahualcoyotl:
*As some have pointed out, a bit feminine...but that's just a personal opinion, I guess.
*The legs seem a bit disproportional to me...they're supposed to be half the length of the body, but it seems like they're a bit too long (This goes even more for Chico).
*His neck is a bit too thin?
*His upper body seems small/thin in proportion to the rest of the body (head/right arm)?
*His upper body also seems otherwise angled than the rest of his body.
(His eyebrows' angling gives him a somewhat surprised look)
Chico
*Again, a bit thin neck.
*Her right breast seems to be drooping, while the other is firm. Also, they look weirdly angled in relation to each other/the angle from which we look at them (heh).
*Her right arm is a bit thinner than her left arm.
*Her stomach is very thin, you ask me http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif How could any organs fit in there?
*The "wrinkle" made by her left pinky finger is odd. Probably better if it was removed/shortened.
*Her left leg seems to be slanting inward and forward, but her foot points almost 90 degrees to the end of the paper (Though this is hard to tell with the skirt thingie there)
Well, that be all.
Again, sorry if I in any way offended you or were mistaken, the characters are really amazing nevertheless http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_yes.gif
Good luck on that scholarship!

Actually, thats another way of showing them. I have seen that way on many other pictures. But it isn't used as much since most people think it doesn't look normal.

*sigh* You can always tell when guys comment on this stuff, because the only thing they care about is the breasts. And, by the way, I stood at that angle and looked in the mirror, so it should be right. *growls* It's all a matter of where the artist chooses to put the line indicating it - similar to drawing the jawbone on a character who is looking up (there are three ways to illustrate that, as there are numerous ways to illustrate breasts).
And obviously no one here has heard of turning out from the hips... That's why her legs look weird. Sorry, but it's a bad habit of mine to draw most people like they're ballet dancers.
Chico looks that thin because of stylization and the angle at which she's standing. Gods pardon me for not doing straight on shots.
*grin* And yes, Coyotl is supposed to be a pretty-boy/bishounen. So he's supposed to kinda look girly.
I was also going for a more mange styled look, because when I work in the style I'm most comfortable with, I like my work better. And if I like it, I'll be more comfortable turning it in for a scholarship. I worked some more on Ehecatl today (and added her horse into her picture), so she should be finished soon.
EDIT: I hope I'm not sounding too mean... What I really would prefer is less a critique of the actual art so much as a review of the design of the characters.

Ahh, sorry about that, then http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif
As for the design, all I can say is that Chico's shoes seem a bit out of place (as opposed to the rest of her free and airy costume).
And seeing as Coyotl is a Wind God (though what you put in that term, I can not know) , I'd think he'd have more extravagant clothing.
That thing he wears looks like a pyjamas http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif
Mehh, I'm not really into aztecs/design.
Anyway, the rest looks good to me.

most early south american culture had lots of color in thier wardrobe... and as a designer the details of the costumes should be more pronounced to reflect the culture... just think if people who never saw anything aztec before played your game... you would want them to get a sense of the cultures style, since that is where you are generating some of your ideas...even if its like you said earlier that the aztecs took over the world there would be a severe aztec influence over the entire world... it would still really show up in the european who where dominated..... most cultures when controlled for long periods of time assimilate the dominant culture as part of thier own....that and seeing some more dynamic poses would be nice http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif
thats all got ..... for now.....

Ah, but Coyotl is not an Aztec. He's from their version of Europe (though his mother is an Aztec). So why should Aztec customs and clothing affect him at all?
This is all rather difficult to explain without going into a lot of detail that probably doesn't make sense, but on Anahuac (their earth), the European tribes never developed into the nations that they did in our reality. They remained pretty much nomadic tribes (although at the point at which the story begins, they do have castles and the beginnings of a feudal system). The Aztecs grew and conquered almost the entirety of both American continents, and the Japanese are powerful in Asia and the Pacific, but that doesn't mean the European tribes have been conquered or should have assimilated into the Aztec or Japanese cultures. They are the equivalent of some African or Amazon tribes today (y'know...they still keep their tribal identity and traditions, despite limited contact with outsiders).
Coyotl is the first member of his tribe to have more than passing contact with outsiders (Oh, and by the way...his tribe has this thing about colors. The lower rank you are, the more color you're expected to wear. The lack of color in his clothing indicates high rank, not that it particularly matters). He is sent to Cem-Anahuac (the Aztec country) to learn about their technology and culture, because his father feels that as the next ruler of his people, he ought to know such things. Turns out he doesn't need to know, because by the time it all stops mattering, his father hasn't died and he hasn't inherited rulership of the tribe.
And what I mean by "the time it all stops mattering" is when he (along with a bunch of other people) gets his physical body turned into a statue, and has his soul sucked into a sacred non-existant place called the Temple. There he finds out that he was never really human, that his human body was just a shell for the spirit of the Wind Knight, and now, as such, he is expected to fight against the Lords of Mictlan to save Anahuac. None of which was particularly unexpected, mind you.
But that's all irrelevant side story for a relatively minor character. Have a nice day.

Okay. This is going to sound ugly and bad, but Jade and Red Comet, you guys need to calm down. When you ask for opinion and thoughts, these people has been very nice and supply you with a bucket of them. None of them are pointless criticism, they all have facts bassed and are trying to be helpful. There isn't a need to keep fencing them off for suggesting a few things. Afterall, you guys are the ones who asked for opinion. And when people give you opinion, you get angry. Who will be stupid enough to do this again next time?
If you had a story with your guy hence influencing the way he dress, and you didn't make it clear in the beginning. You really can't blame people for asking questions and making suggestions! And, I think Batou's suggestion og more Aztec research would apply on Chico since you mentioned she is a full-blooded Aztec. Style-wise, of course, it is your picture, you can do whatever style you want. However, when stating this point, no need to get angry.
It boils down to, if you want comment and opinions, don't get angry when they are handed to you. It makes people wary of doing it again in the future. Afterall, they only want to help and hope to see you getting your scholarship. No one wants to offend you or anything.

If LRC and LRJ want to defend their point of view they can do so, just like any else will voice their opinion also. It is a Forum.
On topic: The drawing itself can be understood, why do we need a historical account of the character that is been drawn? We can critique the line work, the shading, the coloring, the presentation, etc etc.
The drawing on a whole is well done. The lines are sharp and clear. The shading is done well also, gives a sense of dimensionality. The coloring in "my" opinion is somewhat not very dynamic. Meaning it's typical, nothing stands out. But if that is what you are going for, simplicity is the best route. Coloring is very difficult in itself. Choosing the earthtones was well used. Makes the character appear to be earthbound. Again LRJ if that is the purpose of the drawing then you have done well.
PS. What were the requirements that this school wants of the drawing? And do think you have met the requirements? And if you have, then your picture is finished and well done.

...I hate people. That sums up my feelings right now. Especially people who give no one any room to be artistic and creative. How many times do I have to explain that this is an ALTERNATE UNIVERSE?! It's in an alternate universe so that I can do what I please with cultures and such. *bangs head on a wall* That's it, after Xalaquia I'm not posting any more of my designs. And I especially HATE shallow people *coughSord* who only see the breasts and sexual connotations of an image. Because of him, I've decided I've had enough and am NEVER posting another female drawing here again (except for the design for Xalaquia, just so Hikara can see her).
Sorry to go off on all of you, but I have to get this off my chest. I hate it when people are so stuck in their damn ways and can't give anyone room for artistic freedom. Gods forgive me for coming up with my own way of doing things.
Thank you to the (relatively) few people who have actually commented on the designs of the characters and not the quality of how I drew them. That's what I was looking for, not "OMG! This is wrong! That is wrong! She's not fucking sexy enough!" Sorry to those of you who said that kind of thing, but I don't degrade myself by doing "fanservice".

Well, when there's five pages (approximately) of people telling me that my female character doesn't have big enough boobs and my male (NOT AZTEC) character doesn't look Aztec enough, despite me posting about six times that he's not, it gets a little ANNOYING. And how many videogame women do you see with large breasts? not many. I think teh whole concept of teh game is very splendid, and I would definatly buy it the second it went on the shelves.
PS. Ladyjade, if you ever make it big as a game producer ect (I've always wanted to be a producer for nintendo but like that will happen. plus i've decided to teach english in japan instead) could I maybe lob you some of my ideas and character designs. I've always wanted to make my ideas come into 3D, or even 16 bit!

<=/ I didn't really read the whole thread of this, but believe me, I know what you're goin' through.
Just like one of those other guys said, those pictures are done. I have big doubts that they aren't up to par with the reccomended requirements for your scholarship.
Don't hit me, but I think you should move to FFXI. They have more detailed character design... I mean, c'mon, it's Square! XD
.....5 pages worth... jeez...
You guys, you've got to consider... That must really hurt. Our artistry is a gift in its own, we all've got our own styles and love the way we piece them together.
For other ppl to "bump" us up for a good long while and suddenly crucify our work can cause big stuff like this.
I don't wanna see LJR leave the forums... especially before 1000 posts. Honestly, I'm not even leaving...
Unlike her, though, I kinda do "fanservice" http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime2.gif;... I'll brief it here and shut my yap..

Hm.
I just want to say one thing. Sord didn't actually comment on breast size. He commented on the breast looking a little odd from the angle it is. He didn't say it has to be bigger. I felt that comment was a bit unfair on him.
... No one kicked DBS anywhere. He got addicted on FFXI and hence he didn't post here much. And no one was being hostile on him, Hikara made a bad joke/comment, he apologized.
Why does everyone always think someone is attacking them? There is no attack here. Just take a deep breath, and well.. treat a comment as a comment, not an attack.

Actually Navi, you're only refferring to one incident. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime2.gif; There's some facts you misssssssed. But who cares about that.
My mind set right now is to find a way to talk with LJR and help change her opinion... I can see you're trying to clear things up, but before you jump anywhere, get full facts first.

I feel bad, because I don't think that some people realized that my rantings and anger weren't directed at any one person, but at a bunch of them. Wow, this thread has turned into a flame-fest.
Everyone: Go easier on LJR, yeah? Artists have easily hurt feelings.
LJR: Go easier on everybody, yeah? Maleness aside, some of the points that have been brought up are somewhat valid. You should be happy it's gotten this much fervor over it, actually. Which is better in the long run for you, as an artist? Mindless platitudes that tell you nothing, or comments on things that actually give you some insight into what the people looking at the image are really thinking? And just because people are blind doesn't necessarily mean they're trying to be mean... Actually, I'd prefer to hear the same thing from several people. One person, it may just be their opinion, but several means something is truly noticable and needs to be worked on. Perhaps you should take the repeat comments in that light? Nobody is out to get you, seriously. Everybody here loves your work. That they're being critical of it is a good sign. You've gotten past the 'wow' stage to the 'wow, but...' stage, where people are comfortable and used to your work and feel like they can really open up with what they think and what they might notice. That can be a valuable tool. So, don't worry, ok?
As for the character designs...
Coyotl:
Nice, standard prettyboy. His costume is somewhat plain and lacks colour, but the reasons for that have been noted, and thus it makes sense. He doesn't particularily catch the eye and stick with you, but since you seem to be indicating that he's a somewhat minor character, that's actually a good thing. You don't want your minor characters to be so flashy and overdone they overwhelm the main ones. If he is a main one and I'm interpreting things wrong, I might suggest a few more flamboyant touches to make him really stick. Think of main characters in RPGs vs. minor/side characters and the way they're usually done, and adjust accordingly.
Chico:
I like her. Not too flashy, but she sticks out at you. Is she a major, but not main character? She has that look to her(In the sense of, say, Lulu in FFX - She's major, but not one of the two -main- main characters). Her hair seems fine. Her costume isn't so complex it would be difficult to render well, and not so plain you lose interest in looking at her. Her shoes do bug me, though. She seems almost like she should be half barefoot, or at least with open-toe sandals of some sort. The laces are a nice touch, but the standard high-heels look of the shoe itself somehow doesn't quite mesh with the rest of it. Her breast -does- slightly bother me, but it's more of an issue of the way the line defining it goes over to the other one. I can't really explain it, but it's not really important anyway, since it has nothing to do with the character design.
On the whole, I like them. They work quite nicely.

oh boy, geez. First of all, i would like to thank Navi for pointing out that i said nothing about the breast size. They just look like they are at 90 degree angles. Another thing, LJR, i asked if you were doing just characters, or landscapes, or anything else your doing, and you never answered. If you want us to give opinoin on "game concepts" we need to know more than just the characters look. The LRC does seem to have a pretty intresting story going. Another thing, i stayed on DBS side the entire time (although as you said LJR, the vent was to several people.) And if i were you, i wouldn't make comments on how I'm perverted. You should know from past posts that i've made, and i know you've read cause you've responded to them, that i don't think that sexual appearance is all that matter. If you wanted us to give something else on the character, how about posting a personality? I don't mean to sound rude, or snotty, though it may come across as that considering this is all type so you can't hear emotion in one's voice. I'de really appreciate it if you would finish this, and if it makes you feel any better, i won't even comment on any more of your art work when it comes to females.

first things first *breaks personality and gives both LJR and LRC a ridiculosly big hug* second off your interpritaion of people for games is a little off and I do agree with your oppinions of the look of people I don't care for mucsel(sp) freaks with no brains or manners because that insults me and for the girl shapes I feel sorry for ones that look like most guys fantisies because then they are remembered for how they look and not what they did in the game it's self and for real life girls that look like that (fantisy comment) I feel sorry for them because they get attention in areas where they don't want it.
third I am incredibly sorry for the loss of your art work on the forms LJR so I will request things from now on simply to have your art work to look at it really is astounding. fourth I would like to say that LRC's story is fasinating and I would love to hear/read the rest of it sometime. fifth I understand your frustration at people I have similar problems (not in the arts but just there being they don't understand different). finaly I would like to take Hikara up on his offer for the game test. I will always miss your art lady jade but it is your decion so I won't question it.

I agree with a lot of what you said, there... But I don't need everyone to practically copy/paste what everyone else said. Hearing some things from more than one person IS very helpful, but hearing it 100 times is a little ... stupid.
And, for those that are wondering, what Ian did is what I was looking for... A good critique, not of the quality, but of the designs themselves. You don't see perfectly proportioned concept art for anything, fashions, games, comics, or anything. It wasn't meant to be perfect at all - I was laying out the colours and such for the characters. (The fact that quite a few people didn't seem to notice this just emphasizes that some people don't bother to read the threads they post in.)
I can see that I my art will be missed. All I have to say about that is, tough crap - I can't deal with the stress right now. None (or at least, not many) of you have been happy with anything I've done for the past few months, and I'm tired of listening to griping. (Another bit of advice is never piss off or argue with a Taurus - I'm as hard headed as a bull and you'll never get me to change my mind.)

Whoa, hey, wait!! I didn't say anything critisizing, so can't I be exempted from this comment? I mean, honestly, you don't know the truth of anyone here, unless you know them in person. You cannot go around calling people things they are not, just because it makes you feel better. Ever think about peoples' feelings?? And, I'm sorry to hear that you've been critiqued so much LJR, but don't let it get to you. Half these people on the boards have no clue what they're saying, they just want to talk so they sound sociable. I don't want to be Cap'n Harshness on this subject, but you guys should really lay off this subject. If you don't like the artwork, go find a less talented artist to flame. The...biggedly-named guy at the beginning was good. Nice and simple, leaving room for improvement in the game.
And the....Chico(?) girl was really good. I actually didn't see any of the "flaws" that were pointed out. That's what a couple of years of biology and physiology do to ya. My only problem with her were the shoes.(Oh, the shoes!) Are women actually expected in society (ours, not the alternate universe) to wear shoes like that? That's terrible, and really makes me want to learn just a little more reflexology (just in case*wink wink*)
But if you really do insist on leaving forever and ever and ever, PM me before you go and i'll get you my email adress. I refuse to miss out on ANY more of your pics. If that means moving to deviantart, I will.

now this is getting ridiculously childish. and i mean this at all of you. seriously, out of fanworks, i would expect a lot more out of all of you. do you guys have no common courtesy and respect for fellow artists? as an artist, i am disappointed at the attitudes and behavior shown here.
now ladyjade, as an artist, you will have to show your work everywhere and get used to crits and whatever people say. and i know it hurts right to the heart because you work is from your heart. but while some of the comments were needlessly agressive, some were helpful and you might have been sensitive to the comments because it's your work. but not posting your art here ever again will hurt you in the long run because you can get some very useful crits and feedback from here, and you'll be missing your chance. trust me, if this hurts, art school will slaughter you. imagine something worse than an instructor taking a big black fat sharpie and marking a big fat x on your work and then throwing it in the garbage bin. i've seen many many people crying in the hallways and as a previous student rep, i've had to deal with them. i would advise you to be brave and toughen up, practice, hone your skills, don't be embarassed and continue to put up your work while at the same time developing your emotions and ability to filter out comments. most of all, learn that you're always going to have to listen to people crit your work. if you can't take a client or your boss trashing your work, you're not cut out to be an artist. you're an concept illustrator/designer, you're not a fine artist, it's not just all about you. you'll always have to listen to people evaluate your work and then you'll have to make changes based on those opinions, some you might not agree with, but it comes with the job. if you fail at this, you will nto be successfull.
i don't want to see anymore of this behavior. i really do expect more from all of you. if you cannot post anything else without resorting to such childish behavior and comments, don't post. and for people who are overly sensitive, learn to develop thicker skins. as i said, it's disappointing to see fellow artists resort to this. i don't want to see anymore temper tantrums from anyone. grow up. seriously.
