Actually, the sign originally meant "Victory." It is indeed, a "V" for "Victory." It's come to be a reference to "Peace" only because traditionally, "Peace" comes after "Victory" has been achieved. So the gesture doesn't actually mean "Peace," it means, "We just kicked your ass, and now we're going to celebrate it."
