View Full Version : here's my own take on cheating.

yeah, cheating can adversely affect a game, and ruin it for others if less scrupulous people abuse it. but the way i see it, everyone, legit, duper, whatever, needs to recall that this is a GAME, specifically, an online game whose playability is finite.

i'll explain by example. the other day i accompanied a friend through mines, on one of the rare times i get on Episode 1 and 2. i was a FOnewearl, and she had a friend who was a FOmar. he insisted on casting most of the support techs. why? because he didn't want his experience to be "tainted" by my duped techs, lol. now, isn't it kind of silly to get so worked up about a game i doubt any of us will be playing 5 years from now? i seriously doubt it'll even be online that long.

to a lot of people, i've learned that PSOW is practically a hobby. i'm about the same way myself. but it's probably best not to get TOO worked up about it, as it won't last forever.

http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif though i think people who use hacks and whatnot to deliberately cheat or bother others need a good smack, but hey, that's just me, lol

that's interesting, but it has nothing to do with the topic.

I hate it when the first person to reply quotes the entire first post. Like I forgot what the topic was or something.

Heyf00l, chill you're getting pestered over posting techniques...

It's surprizing that some people do get so worked up about cheaters, and cheating in general. Some people that went legit admit that they delete their characters saying that they were "Tainted".

Here's my opinion, Rares, stats, the game, it's all just bits of information. just because it's been manipulated doesn't mean it's tainted. If the game does not function normaly anymore, or there are severe, game play crippling, disk read error, problems then it is tainted. If someone uses dupes and code manipulated items, and you don't like it avoid them. Cheaters weren't meant to be this way but they are now an integral part of PSO, all the complaining and petitioning in the world won't get rid of them. Getting mad just because someone has an unfair but achievable advantage is just senseless. As long as they're not intentionally being a bother and messing with you then it's not worth alienating them from the start.

Not all cheaters are jerks who know absolutely nothing about how to play the game. Just because someone cheats in a game does not mean they are Immoral antisocial criminals, or too stupid and helpless to play the game right. Not all legits are perfect saints who have the ultimate skill and devotion. Being legit is nothing special, honor and morals have absolutely nothing to do with how you play an online video game. I never understood the elitests of the game and their views.

Cheating is merely an advance in tactical science, nothing more.

Meh. I don't intend to argue too much in this thread.

here is my view... cheating was not suppose to be in the game but it is... so either deal with it or play offline (or something else if you have a better idea). ST has no desire to fix the gliches and ban the hackers so they will be here to stay.

Hackers period don't get on my nerves, but the hackers who hack then go off and trash talk about how good they are, that gets on my nerves. Also people who steal all the kills with their hacked weapons get on my nerves.

Now Legits can get on my nerves too (even though I'm Legit. I was not Legit at one time) when they rub in that they are Legit a little too much.

another gripe i have about the entire legit/cheating situation and everything is how insane it makes us look. i've told people who don't play PSO about some of the things that go on here, and they've all looked at me like i needed my head checked. it makes me wonder how the most extreme people from both sides act in real life, away from this game that they stress about so much http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif i find that thought kind of scary, actually.

I've played PSO for around 4 years now (god, it's been that long!?), and as such I have played both with dupes (spread needle+99) and legit, as I now play.

My take on cheating varies, depending on exactly what the "cheat" is.

In all truth, I don't have much of a problem with dupes. Sure, seeing 3 of your team members running around each with a TJ Sword with 100% on 3 stats is annoying, but you can usually still get the exp. And if you ask me, that "tainting" stuff is stupid. If you don't want to get "tainted" exp then go to some block in the EU ships with nobody there and play solo. Or better yet, play offline. Or just play with a team of legits.

However, cheats (like FSOD) that are caused by other players ARE something I'm against. As PSO is an online game, I don't mind what you do to your own character, but when somebody else starts to affect my own game as well, they have gone too far. Anyone who plays ep3 may have seen the lobby FSOD that some are capable of, and while it doesn't hurt us now as much as it did, it still serves as an inconvienence, and thus I could never be in favor of it.

So that's my stance. Dupes don't bother me, but cheating that harms others does. Also, cheating to gain an unfair advantage in BA annoys me. A lot. (HP glitch, max stat, etc in BA1)

Thats how I feel but what did the first part of your post have to do with anything?
I'm all for duping and whatnot but the game gets boring, it may not seem like that becasue i have been playing PSO since it was out on DC which is i dont know 3 years? and im still enjoying it.

All i want is to have a legit only ship where we can have fun enjoying the game how it was made...

http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif i think it really says something about the community where all but one line of my post is discarded as irrevelant since it's something different from the usual legit/duper arguments. seriously, there is not one thing in this thread that hasn't been said hundreds of times already. even Rising_Sunset posted a link to a previous argument like this, lol, that's bad.

anyway, my point was that i fail to see why people get so attached to something that won't last all that long anyway. but i think it's best if this topic just dies quietly.

I agree with Ness's view on cheating simply being an advance in tactics, and I have no regrets of my days of being a leet haxor. As a once time cheater gone legit after becoming bored with my duped-out gameplay style, I fully respect others' methods of playing. Rather than playing legitimately to claim moral high ground, I do it for the extra challenge.

Once you conquer the game with cheats, you may find extra time in PSO by playing legit. I recommend playing without cheats not because they're immoral, but because the game is far too easy with them. One could compare using cheats in PSO to spawn killing in games like Unreal Tournament. Sure, it's an easy way to win the match and it's fun when you start, but:
>It gets boring for you after a while
>Your team is missing out on the gameplay because you're killing all the enemies before they have a chance
If you play legitimately (not spawn killing):
>The gameplay is much more diverse and interesting
>Your team has something to do
