In light of recent events (mainly Sord's new more threatening title) we will be holding inoculations for the Sord Sydrome on Saturday morning at 11:37 AM.

You'd die if you were diabetic. I used to have to deal with THESE things--

http://store.minimed.com/images/mmStore/product_images/MMT-324-325_L.gif

Those are inserted into your gut using a needle two or three times as big around as what you see up there, then they'll be left in that spot for up to a week at a time, though normally for only three days-- at which point, they'll be replaced with another just like it, at a separate location on your gut. Attached to it, is a tube with a resevoir on the end of it, containing 3 CCs of insulin when full. That resevoir is held inside of an Insulin Pump, which will allow you extremely strict control of your Diabetes, at the cost of being a totally different kind of pain in the ass. Sometimes the little tube comes out of your gut just slightly, then gets bent when you lay down on it, or try to hold it in, and it will hinder the reception of your insulin, risking the possibility of making you bedridden for days at a time.

There are reasons why I'm taking 4 or 5 shots a day from a little needle, now.

Meira, I thought insulin pumps were a lot better for diabetics because it allowed them to do day to day things without as much to worry about. My friend has been using a pump for several years now, and he never really complains. When he first found out he had diabetes, he was using shots, though. Those he complained about.

I dunno, I also didn't realize how think the needles were. I imagined they would be uncomfortable, being in you all the time, but I seem to remember my friend telling me you get used to it or something along those lines.

And the donut pillows are over there *points to a corner*. It is reccommended that you don't sit wihtout the pillow until a months after your shot.

Some Diabetics swear by them. Some hate them with a passion. I was using mine for six years. It only took me three days to decide that I didn't like it. I only continued to use it because my doctor insisted. Thanks to some bungling on my part, as well as on my doctor's part, my prescription for the infusion sets to use my out-dated pump was never renewed, and with my current income and insurance, I can't afford the supplies, anyway. I am happy, now.

My personal problem with the pump was that I found it to be rather unreliable. The infusion set is prone to begin coming off when you move, stretch, sweat, swim, or lift large, heavy objects. Because it's a long tube with a thing at the end, it's also prone to come off in a slightly more painful manner when it gets caught on door knobs and cabinet handles, or other objects sticking out of walls and furniture. Sometimes you're not aware that it's coming off, or even worse, you may not be in a position to change it promptly because either you're at school or work, or you just used your last one, and your slow-damned pharmacy won't have your stuff until tomorrow. Over the years, I've been in the hospital *once* because I personally did something stupid with needles-- notice that it was my own stupid action that caused the problem. With the pump I was in the hospital two or three times, and there was another time where the pump caused me to be bed-ridden for three days, and I was otherwise unable to do a whole lot for an entire week. All because the pump wasn't delivering insulin, and there were no readily apparent indications. So I don't trust pumps, at this point. When I take my insulin through a pump, I have to check an hour later to make sure it's had an effect, so that I know I recieved the insulin. When I take insulin with a needle, there's no question-- I know I recieved it.

But still, when the pump is working properly, it gives very strict control over your Diabetes, but not without a price. You must now think twice before engaging in physical activities, for one. The adhesive used with those things is readily disolved by human sweat, and it's been a rare occasion in my experience, when water from a swimming pool didn't just plain strip the infusion set from my skin. So most sports are out of the question. The thing comes with a device to keep water out and absorb shock if it falls, or gets hit by a ball, and so that you can swim with the thing on, but quite frankly, it's a silly idea to think that wearing a pump during these activities is practical in any way, shape or form. Even doing sit-ups becomes rather awkward. I can honestly say that the use of the insulin pump is directly responsible for my weight being in excess of 190lbs. Now that I'm back to using needles, my weight has made a sudden drop, largely due to my sudden increase in physical activities, that I would otherwise have been participating in. All of a sudden, I'm swimming, playing DDR, and I'm even conspiring to take up tennis.

So yeah, some Diabetics love pumps, and some Diabetics hate them. I, for one, don't like waking up in the middle of the night with a tube wrapped around my waist. To me, freedom is not having the ability to eat pizza at two in the morning without having to take a shot. To me, freedom is not being restricted from physical activities because of a tube that's been poorly adhered to my gut.
