Antidisestablishmentarianism - Opposition to the disestablishment of the Church of England

floccinaucinihilipilification - the estimation of something as worthless.

Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia - Fear of long words

Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis - lung disease caused by the inhalation of very fine silica dust

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysilio gogogoch - a village in Wales

you know those words, including the ones meira posted, aren't so difficult to say if you just break them down into syllables. they're just long words made out of short words.

Yeah, but try to say one of those words as a single word, and without looking at them.

LollipopLolita
Apr 26, 2004, 01:04 PM
easy, the first one is really easy. plus it's an easy word and it makes sense as a word. though i wouldn't think it's specifically about the church of england.

number 3 is funny. knowing root words and origins help.

number 4 is easy if you have medical or chemical knowledge

when you're not a native speaker and learn to break things down by syllables, everything makes a whole lot more sense and it's easier to spell and pronounce.

hell my mother's name is a mouthful by itself. even my brothers names rival the words up there.

the village in wales though, how would that fit on an envelope.

More importantly... How the heck did such a long name come about? I mean look at it! It's all one word! Normally, before the name of a town ever starts getting written down, the name is flung about for decades or longer in conversation-- especially in places that've been inhabited for centuries, like Whales... I mean... People were actually having to SAY that name over and over before it became established as a town!

Still though, they're bound to have some sort of abbreviation for it...

Kinda like... We call it LA, or Los Angeles... But the complete name of the city is El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de los Angeles de Porciuncula.

well you see, those damn people in wales are not the only weirdos around. at least they don't use last names that originates from the name of the town they're from.

we'll just call it llanfair

meira, you and i can have long interesting converations.

Oddly enough, AlbinoBlackSheep. Around November or October of last year there was a thread about long words; there were some that were even longer, but the forums went down sometime in November, and many posts were lost. I recall that the longest word found had nearly 40 syllables in it-- it was the nomenclature for a chemical compound. The absolute LONGEST word we figured out though, was the complete chemical name for DNA, which has several hundred thousand letters. Needless to say, it was not actually written in the thread, but rather, only pointed out.

While I figured it was a Welsh term, I wasn't aware that Welsh was a common language in England... O_o
