Chapter 1: A fresh start in PSO world
As soon as I received my PSO game on January 31st, I popped it in my Dreamcast and made a RAmar named Tiger. Then after I put in my serial number and Access Key number I logged online for the first time, little did I know it would be my life, literally, for the next 6 months and many more to come.
I saw all the ships and decided to goto Oberon block 1. There was about 4 people in the lobby and were talking in Japanese gibberish. I then stepped up to the counter and was 2 rooms. One was locked was in Japanese language and the other was also named in Japanese but all people in there were American. One of those people would be my best PSO buddy named Norrin Radd.
We went to forest where we hacked away at the enemies. All the people in the room were nice and cared and shared the items. Meseta was extremely hard to come by. 1,000 meseta was like gold compared to what we had. Our mags were little dinky things and we saw the photon blasts they made and each time it was a dolphin or a ram. Little did I know I would cherish these moments for the rest of my PSO gaming life.
Chapter 2: The Encounter
Norrin and I always shared with each other and stuff like that. We had to fend for ourselves. Then a Japanese player named King came in a room one day when Norrin and I were playing. Well we were out of supplies so we had to go restock up. When we went to pioneer we saw weapons all over the place. It looked like paradise to us. Varista’s, Blade dances were layed all over the place! I was so happy I got some stuff I kept it in my bank and couldn’t wait till I could use it in battle when I had enough level to do it! Then we thanked him and he did a ^ ^ thing and left. I guess that means thanks or something. These were extremely rare for us at the time.
Chapter 3: A gift for a friend
A new thing was arising from rumors and myths. Rumors of a thing called a “double saber” were arising and my friend Norrin Radd was extremely eager to find one. One day while playing PSO Norrin and I saw someone playing with one. It was a Japanese player and we couldn’t speak to him but as we tried, I guess he got annoyed and ran off. Norrin and I were both amazed by this thing called a double saber. He wanted one so badly he would do anything he could to get one.
So one day when he was offline I ventured off to the Japan servers and tried to find a double saber to give to my friend, Norrin. After an hour of venturing I finally found a person who had it. I offered him 200,000 meseta, which was all the money I had for it. I dropped the meseta and he picked it up and dropped the double saber. I was extremely happy then the Japanese player dropped 300,000 meseta on the ground and said “Free of charge >Tiger”. I said “Thank you.”, and left to brag about my finding to the other players. I bragged and bragged and told everyone and showed them it and stuff.
Then Norrin got on and I gave it to him. He was extremely happy and thanked me for the gift. I would like to thank him also for being the best PSO friend a guy could ever have.
Chapter 4: The Unknown
When I was playing with Norrin a friend of Norrin’s came in named Samurai_X. He was Level 82 and came in with a flashy new weapon called a “Nightmare Axe”. The weapon was double bladed and was a long axe. It was a rusty brown and had white photon blades on it. He then let Norrin try it and he heaved it and demolished the enemies in front of him. When Norrin then dropped it to give it back to him, I picked it up and looked at it. It clearly said “Nightmare Axe” and I could not equip it but it did have a description that I could not remember what it said.
I’ve told everyone about this weapon. Some say it’s a hack but I know this was definetly not a hacked weapon. I could see the “Nightmare Axe” clearly and it did have a description. Yet to my avail, most of the people I met don’t believe me, others say it was hacked. But I do know for a fact that was definitely not a hacked weapon of any sort. That was truly a weapon. Others have said that they also have saw this weapon, or have heard about it. But I know for a fact I saw it and I know its out there. After the next two weeks we played and played. We even made a clan called chosen clan which I’m still in. Little did we know that what was about to happen would change the rest of PSO literally, for the rest of time….
Chapter 5: A Change For The Worst
Gameshark…..Codebreaker….Xploder….possibly the worst thing in PSO’s community. These things have brought PSO to its knees. But it didn’t always start out that way. As I could see..it was a turn for the worst.
Two weeks after I saw that nightmare axe, news had broken out, bad news. Code websites had now released codes to get to lvl 100 and have infinite meseta. What would take me a couple of months to do would take a gamesharker, just minutes. Yet I didn’t care, I wanted to be legit all the way. I would see gamesharkers and yell and taunt them and it had no effect whatsoever. Why work for your stuff when you can do it with $40.00 more dollars and an extra 5 minutes of working to put in codes? I’d just think that to myself each day. But yet I knew that somehow it would all payoff. I think someone says it best when they told me this, in an e-mail. He just got online a couple of days ago and after his first experience this is what he said..
“NOW I see why the legits make such a fuss! EVERYONE I met was running round with a Lavis Cannon and a Choa/Nightopian Mag, I narrowly escaped a Pker, and I had my Double Saber stolen! As I've never been online before, I was at level 72, with no really special weapons or mag, and everyone I met was doing 5 billion pts of damage per hit. Ridiculous. It would be OK if they kept their super-powers limited to offline mode, but by introducing all this stuff into the online community, they upset a FRAGILE ECOSYSTEM. I did meet a few nice people, a couple of low-level characters who I gave some Units away to, and one nice character who helped me out who I gave a 4 slot Valiant Armour.”
But lets go back to what I was talking about. The lvl 100 and infinite meseta thing happened at about the end of February. What would happen in March would make the past cheats seem like roach crap….
Chapter 6: Pking
One day while looking at the GameFAQ’s boards I came across a topic named PK. I learned PK stood for “player kill”. Somehow you could do it with resta. At the time everyone thought it was fake and there was no way to do it. So after seeing that topic I went on Oberon and made a game called “PK me for a prize”. So a person came in and pked me. I asked him how the hell he did it and he dropped an item called devil/technique++. So I equipped it and left the room. I then entered another room and used resta. Everyone dropped where they stood. They lay there dead, their meseta and weapon, lay next to them. They all said “WTF WAS THAT!?”. I then revived them all and I did that for about 2 days to people. It was fun at the time but it was wrong. So I took it to the shop and sold it. I regret ever pking anyone. Along with pking came something else. LVL 999 mags. These things were incredible and I thought were legitimate.
Then came the Nei’s Claw, Egg blaster, and Sonic Knuckles. These were thought to be rare, legitimate items. They are PSO cup prizes that were received for winning a downloaded quest in the fastest amount of time. But some person, decided how fun it would be to hack and ruin everyones fun and distribute these items to everyone. But as if that wasn’t enough, things were about to get a lot worser….
Chapter 7: The Death Of A Hero
I entered a Trades room one day looking for a LVL 15 resta disk. A lvl 100 Humar named BraveBen had one. He told me it was free of charge and I could take it. I had a funny feeling about this disk and thought nothing of it and took it. Instantly my character dropped to the ground and my weapon and meseta dropped to the ground. I then went back to the hospital thoughting he had pked me but when I arrived back to the hospital I was dead again. I looked at my HP and it said 0/0. I quickly turned off my dreamcast, and went offline after I turned it back on. Upon entering Pioneer 2 Tiger dropped to the ground again….
After 704 hours of playing time. After 9,000,000 EXP received. After defeating V-hard mode on all stages and beating every quest on that mode, the worst thing possible happened. My beloved lvl 100 RAmar, Tiger, was dead. I sat there, with my mouth open and a tear running down the side of my face. After 4 months of all that hard work, it lay there, just a heap of un-fixable ruins. I prayed there was a way to un-fix this thing called CK that happened to Tiger but it was un-fixable. So I had to make a new character. I told everyone about this and they were all sad and supportive. I thank them a lot for that. Some people say it was stupid of me to take that item. I had no idea, it was a ck item. Others say it was BraveBen’s fault. Which I think is true that he is the suspect. But for some reason, people blame it all on Sega….
Chapter 8: Sega is not at fault…
Why do these people blame Sega for letting this all go out of hand? Sega tried tons of times before the game even came out to stop this from happening. They didn’t just say “Hey I got a great idea. Why don’t we bust our asses for thousands of hours to make this game, then let people cheat and mess it all up?”. Are you out of your mind? And then when people cant wait for ver 2 to come out they complain about pay to play? Japanese players had to pay for Ver1 from the get go and do they have these problems? They get special quests because they PAY. They even had a PSO cup, which was almost ruined by a couple of hackers, yet Sega held it anyway because Japanese players respect the game. Don’t get me wrong tons of American players like myself respect the game and obey the rules.
Then some guy comes around and starts Pking, FSODing, Cking. Oh yeh it sure is real cool alright! Lets take out our anger at being picked on at school on people online! Gosh I’ll be the best hacker ever, jee-golly bob! WRONG! Listen if you wanna go PK and stuff like that, go do it in Unreal Tournament and don’t waste our fun time because you cant have your way.
Chapter 9: The Aftermath
6 months ago 100 meseta was gold at the time. Now that gamesharkers have 999,999 meseta and constantly hand it out, it’s worth absolutely nothing now. I now see level 20 players with their Robochao’s and Spread Needle’s +99 and they literally wipe out a pack of enemies by themselves. Being a LVL 100 which before earned you respect, now leads to fear of you, and not being able to play because they think you may PK them. 6 months ago every room on Oberon ship was open except maybe 3 on each block. Now every block has at least 15 rooms locked and the other rooms are people giving out rares or people having a “PK war”.
At one time I was able to post at GAMEFAQs and everyone were against cheaters. Now people are on there asking for gameshark codes. PSO world has been taking a turn for the worst also. I now retreat to a guild to call my own, and I fear if I was to say the name that place too, would also take a turn for the worst. And just to think it was only 6 months ago….
