Everyone here knows my character as Shara right? Ive had it since day 1 of dreamcast pso v1 (import). Well apparently some people take offense when you explain that you had the name first. My character is the one in all caps:

I know how you feel though. I used to have this HUnewearl on v2 named PhantasyR('r' means returns) I got her up to level 28 and sat around any lobbies that weren't n00b infested. In one(don't quite remember which one) lobby, a HUmar joins in his name was simply ThatGuyUNo(now refered to as TGUN to save space). Well, he starts talking with me, I ignore him because he kept saying a/s/l every five messages. But out of nowhere he says 'WOW! You have a cool name!' he dissappears and ten minutes later someone comes in using the name PhantasyR.

I have this strangefully wicked idea that you are just trying to be incompetent for laughs. Just incase you really are as incompetent as you sound, let me point out the fact that if you would READ the entire thing carefully you will find it wasn't a big deal to me. The whole point is to show you just how rude some people can be. If you ask me, a true duplicate name is rare (excluding all of those "XxXxXSSJsephXxXxX types).
Even if someone shares your name, the reasons and backround are almost always different. Take Dragoon for instance: someone could be copying Meira's fic, have an affinity for dragon slayers, or just really love Panzer Dragoon Orta.
It is the mind set that makes you unique.

Folks that claim to be the "real" something often annoy me... Unless they actually have someone pretending to be them... Because that's just creepy.

trying to win an arguement with a dumbass is like trying to push down a brick wall with your bare hands. you could do it, but it takes so long to do so, most will just give up before its done. its good to have an original name, and i can understand how you could get upset by someone stealing it and claiming your a cheat, but this is just a game people. if your going to get this upset by someone taking your name, go play monopoly cause there is only one copy of each piece. if you dont want to quit PSO though, go for something that is ungodly original, something that some little punk would have a hard time coming up with an answer to. for example, ill take my char., almost everyone thinks that ED 209 is just a name with a bunch of numbers at the end of it, but only a true 80's movie fan will get will came from even though i left out some dots and dashes.

Has anybody ever had somebody come up to you and not say that you stole their name, but actually demand that you give them your name? This just happened to me a while ago. The conversation was very short.

Actually that happened to me. A friend of mine, that I had arranged to meet, met a HUcaseal called LadyRedComet online at the arranged time and place (oddly enough, at the pre-arranged time, I was unable to get online). It's really creepy because that isn't a character I have, and somehow he knew things that my friend and I had discussed via pm. Either that or he was just bullshitting my friend.

I eventually ran into the bastard and had a confrontation with him. He said it got the name from seeing it on a different pso website (of which I was not a member. I have since signed up for the username LadyRedComet there...but I don't understand how they could have seen there if no one had that name...)

It was in general an unnerving/creepy experience.

I'd still like to know why he impersonated me...I'm not even popular, much less well-known...

When it is a common name like er, I dunno, John or something, it's hard to accuse who is copying who and such. I suppose if you have a character name mokonokosokooko123425321 and you see someone else with the exact same name you prolly have a good reason to suspect the person is some sort of lame copycat/stalker/imposter/and such.
