This applies to fanfiction writers...

I don't write canon fics. It's boring, because all it shows is that you know how to basically copy whatever the original creator wrote. Ho hum, pig's bum. However, should you EVER EVER EVER use a non-canon character and insert into a canon world, then you will become Public Enemy Number 1. Oh, and don't even get me STARTED on Mary Sues and how hated you will become for having one. The worst canon people of all are arguably Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. I have yet to see other examples of canoners who will jump down your throat in an instant should you step out of line.

Can someone please tell me why the fanfiction world is so full of hatred for one another, to the point that one writer is too afraid to post a non-canon story anywhere for fear of having her head bitten off savagely and fed to the dogs? Is there any way I can try to blithely ignore all the backlash against myself for writing non-canon? For me the best way to deal with a problem is to delete the offending story. I never have to think about it again, so it works. I just want to know how come fanfiction is sieged by these people who don't respect real, pure, actual, noncanon creativity.

Pfft... You should've seen the PSDB a couple years ago, back when merely mentioning the name of "Lutz" was enough to spark a heated debate over whether or not he really was Noah; Let alone an entire fanfic about the character.

The Phantasy Star community is rather vividly divided on this issue, and it never really even came to relative peace until someone determined that the Japanese version of the game is a separate, though extremely similar, story altogether. That didn't help much, though. It just made it more difficult to prove one way or the other, requiring strict evidence entirely from the US release of the original series, alone, and even characters specifically refering to Lutz as being the individual travelling with Alis and the others aren't enough to convince some people of Noah's identity.

Yeah.

I don't know why it's like that, but some places it is. You just have to find yourself a place where the webmaster doesn't allow things like that, and then you won't have to worry.

People criticize me in the fandoms I write in because I don't write the characters into the canon universe, and they tend not to like that. I've learned to simply ignore them. The best thing about feedback is that you don't have to listen to what anyone else says if you don't want to. If all they're doing is bitching because you didn't use a canon character or blah, blah, blah, just ignore them. If they have some useful advice, listen to what they have to say.

Not sure if I would be one of these evil people, but here's my two cents:

There's no problem with writing non-canon fiction or whatever. It's a free country. My only problem is when people claim non-canon AS canon. Then it just gets out of hand.

will someone mind telling me what canon is? Cause I think it's considered "a copy," and I have yet to see anyone jump down anyone's throats for putting a non-canon character into a canon world. Or are you just speaking about those idiots at the copyright offices?

Canon the name for the official plot, story, and characters of a given universe. Like, for example, in Star Wars, top Canon is the movies. Anything that happens in a movie, despite sdomething else happening in a book or cartoon or TV show doesnt happen, and is just an alternate universe.

Personally, I'm fine with canon cameos. I refuse to use canon characters and give them anything other than that, since characterizing them is inescapibly giving them something that the creators of that character didnt intend.

Good thing I never ventured out of PSO world with my fanfics.

Scary world indeed.

Rei Ayanami porn isn't canon in the slightest and yet no one complains.

I WONDER how that can be!!! http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif

Cheers, thanks you guys. You really did make me feel a bit better about this whole mess. Sadly this is not the first time it has happened. When I was 13 I wrote a Lord of the Rings-type fic except I inserted a character infused with PARTS of me...like my personality, but not 100% me at all. I posted it up at fanfiction.net and was completely slain for it, people commenting and telling me I'd never read the books (I slogged my way through all of them in seventh grade...I was a pretty bored girl then, and man is Tolkien hard to read), and just begging me not to write again. The second time it was a notoriously non-canon Final Fantasy 7 fic which is quite funny, actually, if anyone wants to read a copy just tell me. Thankfully this time only one out of 34 people disliked it. And this time it was a whole LiveJournal community devoted to roasting Harry Potter RPG communities and pointing out things that are wrong with them, which means I've dealt with the trifecta of worst canon people ever.

See, one of the best parts about PSO fan fiction is that the main characters of the game are known by few, and even if you know all about them, it's very easy to dismiss them. You make your own character, so many people have created stories to go with them. It's very easy to write your story in whatever way you want, and even if canon nuts try to blow up on you, they can't.
