Well... To her credit, there was a time when she was getting rather chubby, and the media hit her pretty hard for it. I recall seeing sketches on both Saturday Night Live and MAD TV that incorporated jokes about that. It very well could've been what inspired her to turn to anarexia.

It's a self-esteem issue, really. They get it in their head that there is fat on their body, and they won't be pretty unless they get rid of it. Not eating is known to be one of the fastest methods there is to lose weight (albeit, it's also possibly the unhealthiest method). There's also a similar disorder called Bulimia, that results from similar circumstances, where eating does occur, but the individual promptly induces vomitting afterward; I suppose Bulimia occurs more when social circumstances make it difficult to not eat.

I'll be quite honest about something here. Back when my sister was in High School, she had a friend who my own friends and I found to be rather attractive. Well, it would seem that after she got out of High School, she developed Anorexia. I met her again several years later, and she was just bone-skinny. She's still attractive, BUT when it comes down to it, she was, by far, better looking when she was meatier.

Remember something people: Attractiveness isn't about being skinny or having six pounds of make-up on your face. The key to being attractive is being healthy. The healthier you appear to be, the more attractive you are. Having a firmly-defined view of your ribs does not look healthy. If I shine a spotlight behind you, and I can see the shadow of your spine, that does not look healthy. If a guy can wrap his arms around you, and give you a firm squeeze of a hug without feeling like he's going to crush you, that is healthy.
