View Full Version : is 4 really the limit for characters per memory card?

system file - 3 blocks
guild card - 7 blocks
network settings - 4 blocks
character file - 11 blocks
character file - 11 blocks
character file - 11 blocks
character file - 11 blocks
now that adds up to 58 blocks
1 less than a memory card 59
what if you have a memory card 251 and there is no preset limit of 4 per card? imagine the possibilities...

I guess it depends on how sega decided to code in the character saving. 4 characters per card could be the hardcoded limit, just like it was 1 on dc no matter how much memory card space you had available.
[edit]
Just read the ign insider article and its 25 blocks total, not 58 as posted above, so i guess its hardcoded. Strange how they managed to fit 4 characters in only 11 blocks tho.

well if you look at it they split them apart:
character used to probly have the system settings include thats why they were big and probly a piece of the network setting with the serial and access built in.
Seeing that from what is heard now that you can save 4 per card thats why they split them.

Change of pace from the DC version where the guild card took up a very large chuck of memory compared to the character data.
Unless they upped the exp given by enemies, I don't see having too many characters. One thing I don't look forward to is being a low level REDRIA HUnewearl...

the way i read it, it sounded like it was 11 blocks per character, not 11 blocks total...

What i was reading they said that the save took up half of the memory card, 25 blocks in total.

If it really is four chars, I already have the four I'm goign to make mapped out.

its a special pso-mem-card then, who cares...
but if the guildcardfile really is only 7 blocks (gcn)... i just think about the v1/v2 where the guildcard was 30 blocks (dc) and the chara itself only 15 (dc) - so i think 4 chars in 11 blocks (gcn) - compressed of couse, seems realistic (just my opinion)...

The character selection screen in the trial only has 4 spaces for your characters, so even if you manage to save more than 4 on a card, they're unlikely to appear on the selection screen, and thus are unlikely to be playable.

Quote from ign insider:
"Characters are stored on the horribly undersized GameCube memory cards, with what seems to be a total of four characters per card. In all, the game requires a total of 25 blocks of memory from your card (yes, that's nearly half!): 3 for the game's system file, 11 for the character file, 7 for your Guild card (a sort of virtual ID card which is used by other players to identify you Online) and 4 for the network settings."

Character File implies a single solitary file of a specific character.

Well if in a memory card 251 the max is still 4 it won't be that bad. Most people will have more than enough with 4 charas and the memory cards are cheap if someone wants some extra charas.

1 GC 'block' (8KB) is 16x the size of 1 DC 'block' (0.5KB)...
GC memcard = 512KB/8 = 64 - 5 (for filesystem) = 59
DC memcard = 128KB/0.5 = 256 - 15 for filesystem = 241 - 41 for no apparent reason = 200

yeah but a memory card 251 could hold 21 (TWENTY ONE!!!) characters if it's 11 blocks per character!!! you'd need 6 cards to hold that much if it was limited to 4 per card...

Mindshare kindly answered this question on Ah Kings forums its 11 blocks for all 4 chars for sure, so total will be 25. he's what he said:
"I have two cards in my GC. One card has 2 character saves on it, and the other card has 1 character save on it. In both cases the PSO main file size is 11 blocks. This seems to suggest that all the characters are stored in the same file."

Whoo thanks for the info love! It looks like I'll have 4 chars on my 59 card. I still have 42 blocks left. I'll probably buy a 251 card when Super Mario Sunshine releases... but don't expect me to create 8 characters. @_@ I'll probably split the total with my sister... 4 each.

Well, I plan on having 4 characters. (It shows in my sig.) I'm gonna use my other card for either additional characters, or placeholder characters used for archiving items.

maybe its like with shenmue (and several other games like... luigis mansion) - you use a fixed file with fixed size for a fixed number of chars - with no option to have more chars on one card, although there would be space for more...
