Just letting everyone know that I should be thoroughly back to my previous posting habits as of now. I went to the Anime Expo at the Anaheim Convention Center, in the general LA area, right next to Disneyland. I did, in fact, get a hold of a collection pictures taken by friends, and once I get a couple of rolls of film down to Wal-Mart, I'll have more pictures to share, as well.

And of course... Beware of Man-Faye.

Well... Sen and I got a hold of eachother the first day, but the following couple of days were absurdly busy, running back and forth between the convention hall, the hotel room, and trying to not spend the entire $400 I had set aside for the trip (an attempt that was very much unsuccessful). As a result, we were unable to get a hold of him again to tell him exactly where in the Hilton we were staying, so we never saw him.

Well, the first day of the convention Man-Faye showed up. I nearly bought a t-shirt from him, but chose not to, deciding that I didn't want to get that close to him. I'll try to get some pictures of him, and some of the more pleasent cosplayers, posted tonight.

I also discovered that they sell katanas at booths there for a mere $30 a pop, and you can often acquire DVD boxed-sets of anime directly from the publishers' booths at a good $50 discount. It really makes me wish that I had brought more money.

katanas?wtf?

HUnewearl_Meira
Jul 6, 2004, 11:43 AM
You read that right, Mike. Katanas. Among other varieties of swords and weapons. Albeit, they're not particularly sharpened, but they're sturdy, they're metal, and they're made in China. A lot of cosplayers bought them as additions to their costumes.

It'd be interesting to grab a bunch and sell them on eBay, but it occurs to me that there'd be laws involved that I could get in trouble for.

Then there's the subject of the Anime Music Video contest. I'll be honest here-- Most of the videos kinda sucked. But those that were good were REALLY good, and they REALLY stood out. A couple of the videos seemed to be in entirely the wrong category (two in the Drama category probably should've been in Action, one in the Action category probably should've been in Drama, and at least one in the Comedy category probably would've done better in the AmTV category).

There was a surprisingly good video in the Drama category, consisting of a Celine Dione song and footage from Kingdom Hearts. There was also another one that thoroughly creeped everyone out, though I can't remember what the song was, nor can I remember what the series was; the subject, however, seemed to be a stalking rapist. Those two videos really stood out over the rest.

The comedy category was pretty bad... The first couple of videos just weren't funny. I just couldn't find the joke in them. There was one video made from an obscure series that hasn't come to the US yet, that was pretty good as a video, and took a song that I normally wouldn't enjoy ("Stacy's Mom") and made it enjoyable. It wasn't that funny, though. The whole thing was a single joke, and was kinda confusing. In retrospect, I determined that it probably should've been in the AmTV category because it was entertaining, but not really funny enough to compete in the Comedy category. The AmTV category is supposed to immitate MTV's content.

There was another video in Comedy that stood out to me. I believe it was funnier in concept than in execution, much like my own fanfic written from the point of view of a Goldfish. The song was Pooh's Nightmare (the song about Huffalumps and whathaveyou), and the series was Neon Genesis Evagalion. I applaud the creator for making the connection between the Huffalumps and NGE's Angels. Very clever.

Two more videos from the Comedy category caught my attention, and these were the only real competitors for my vote. The first was Naruto set to a song from the Disney movie, Aladdin. It was the song Aladdin sings near the beginning of the movie about being a thief and living on the streets. Overall it was rather well done and quite clever, though there were a few scenes that I think could've been improved.

The video that got my vote, however, was entitled, "FOOTBALL!" The song was StrongBad's interpretation of System of a Down, and the video itself drew resources from a number of different series, though I think the principle resource was "Magical Shopping Arcade Abeno Bashi." This was the only video that made the entire audience laugh, and most particularly, it was the only one that gave me, personally, more than just a slight chuckle.

In the Action category... Urg... Well... The Action category was just... Bad. There were two videos that REALLY stood out, and between those two, the one that was considerably better really should've been in the Drama category. The other took a fight from Naruto and stringed it along to a catchy techno song rather well, and though it was toward the end of that particular line-up, it was the first video that really stood out as a video that really defined what the Action category should be like. Other videos just took songs that had far too slow a tempo to make an effective action video, or they just didn't stand out as being put together very well. There was another video that featured Animatrix that might've done well, if the guy presenting the videos hadn't screwed up when he burned the DVD.

The AmTV category was... For the most part... Just bad... Most of the videos didn't make any sense whatsoever, and the most interesting of them consisted mostly of what appeared to be character outlines layed over a generic Windows Media Player visualization. It was an interesting video, but it didn't really seem to have much of anything to do with anything in particular. That was the only category that didn't have at least one video that really stood out from the rest.

And that's pretty much how the AMV contest went.

You're not thinking right. The problem is the Katanas, it's where he would be getting them from and how they would feel about him re-selling them.

Kind of like, of I dunno... "Not for Resale?" But with more pissed off businessmen.

Actually, a lot of what you described seemed to fit with the time I went to Sakuracon earlier this year. I'm not sure how they may compare in quality, but there were a lot of similar things (katanas for sale, etc.)... in fact, we ended up getting two swords while we were there, and I got some nice Naruto gashapons. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

Good god, how much of a loser would you have to be to impersonate Man-Faye?

Thankfully, there is only one Man-Faye in this world.

For your disruption amusement, here is a re-enactment (http://man-faye.mooniidx.com/) of a Man-Faye-related event at the Anime Expo, this year. Warning: Link may not be suitable for those who want to avoid seeing Man-Faye.

Yeah, it kinda happened, too. Someone ran into the hotel, and when asked what the problem was, the comment was made that Man-Faye was bugging people. The comment wasn't meant to get Man-Faye in trouble I don't think (it so happened that the maker of the comment was a member of the group I attended the convention with), but the particular individual that the comment was made to determined that Man-Faye was a trouble maker, and after another half-hearted complaint was made, the cops were called, and Man-Faye was escorted off of the premises. He was later re-admitted, and told to wear a jacket at all times, if he was going to wear the costume.

He was seen again, later on, however, in his costume, singing and dancing along to a radio playing, "I Will Survive" and "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun".

I dunno, I think that a bikini wax would kinda lessen the shock value... I mean, some guy was running around dressed as Yuna as seen in Final Fantasy X-2, and he had indeed shaved. It was kind of disturbing, but more in the fact that he actually looked the part, yet you had the knowledge that he's a guy. As opposed to Man-Faye, whose shock value comes from a decidedly unattractive person wearing what was actually a rather detailed Faye Valentine costume. I'm afraid that if he actually looked clean, you wouldn't get the warning that he's coming, of guys periodically screaming, "AUUURGGH!!" as though they'd just been kicked in the gut with a steel-toed boot the size of a small car. The sound is actually a little scarier than a Doomsday siren, really.

Eh, it's more a situation where I'm not willing to go that far out of my way to get styrofoam and fabric.

I mean, I'm willing to hit up the local Salvation Army, but aside from that... I dunno. I'm also quite willing to build things out of cardboard, as the swords and gun I've made for the past few Halloweens have shown.
