Is caves3 near the surface?

I'm either think about caves 2 or 3, but when I was in a long room I saw skylights. could they be near the surface?

In fact they resemble daylight, but if you notice one of Red Ring Rico's capsules with messages inside, you'll read the following:
"(...) Deep into the caves... I feel I'm being invited" - something like this
And, they were excavating. So it seems that the further you go, the deeper into the ground you descend.
