Depending on what stage of Super Saiyan you achieve, there might be "electricity" coursing along your body, and your hair may grow out to an incredible length.

Of course, if you still have your tail attached, that would mean that you would go Golden Oozaru, which would make you a giant gold gorilla beast. Going even further than that would return you to your original size, but cover most of your body in hair and bulk you up. This is commonly referred to as Super Saiyan 4, though that's incorrect terminology.

Well, that's pretty much the only logical explanation. Every reference to the original Super Saiyan had him using his Oozaru Mode. Obviously since Saiyans considered their tail their source of power and very few seemed to have lost it, so Golden Oozaru must've been what the original Super Saiyan transformed into. Every other Saiyan that achieves the "Super" status had lost their tail at some previous point in time. However, only in Dragonball GT, where Goku and Vegeta again get their tails does Golden Oozaru show up. And of course, the next transformation after that is Super Saiyan 4, leading me to believe that it is indeed not part of a normal Super Saiyan transformation, but instead along the same path as Oozaru transformation.

I haven't seen GT though, and of course, my friend told me that there are times that Goku will go Super Saiyan 1-3 and still have a tail. So that completely screws up the theory... to which I say, "GT is crap."
