At a board I used to go to, we defined a "newbie" as not necessarily someone who is new, but someone who is just a pain in the ass... a nuisance... generally not accepted. There's certain behavior that's an obvious tip-off, but it can vary.

Thus, people can come in, be assimilated, and skip the n00b stage altogether... or they can stay for months and months and STILL be a newbie.

I've been here for quite a while. At first there wasn't any place for me, so I got pushed through the machine, and when I came out I still had to kill afew people to make room, but god damnit, I'm here!
