Maybe it's because people make such a big deal about it.
"*ZOMG*" and "*GASP*", just being examples. If it's just a casual topic and no one makes a big deal about it, it shouldn't be a problem.
But when people actually start that crap, that's when it becomes a problem. When people purposely bring up a person and go, "OMG CAN'T SAY THEIR NAME CAUSE THEY'RE BANNED, I'LL JUST PUT STARS OR SOMETHING STUPID."
