View Full Version : Aeris is dead. The end.

I'm sick of walking around school or surfing the net hearing people say that Aeris isn't really dead and that you can revive her, etc. etc.

Honestly I would be really pissed if she was brought back in a sequel/or Advent Children. It would entirely defeat the purpose of that scene and her sacrifice for everyone.

Here's a movie my brother made to help everyone understand. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

Aeris does not die - if you remember, she returns to the lifestream. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_yes.gif

A significant reason that people play video games (especially RPGs) is so that they can exert some hopeless degree of control within a limited environment. People sometimes feel threatened when their control is jeopardized in such a traumatic manner - i.e. character close to you dies. Or atleast, this is my theory http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

I mean, I didn't even LIKE her, and then all of a sudden Sephiroth comes and goes *splack* and it's all silent and the materia falls out of her hair and then when it hits the floor and starts bouncing, THEN the music starts, and it's all so incredibly fucking sad...

You can bring Aries back. It involves a GameShark though. Also when you get to places with text it freezes...so it's a no no cheat.

You damn right she died! And she better stay dead, that slutty bitch. Anyway, I personally was not a fan of Aeris so unlike everyone and their mother, I was not all boo-hoo about her getting stabbed through the chest by that fine piece of steel. I was more "Meh (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v307/Ezellaur/PSOW/Meh.jpg)" than anything else.

But, like TOH, I would be severely disappointed if they brought her back in any follow-up FF7 plotline. But obviously, for different reasons.

Dude. I cried when freaking Cait Sith was sacrificing himself so Cloud could get the Black Materia.

I mean. Yeah, Cait Sith was a doll, a robot, and even if he died, there could easily be made a replacement, and even THEN, the actual person, his personality would still be there.

But, despite all that...it was heart-renchingly sad. I don't know why exactly. It was probably had something to do with the mini-speech he gave, and how he died. Yeah, it made me tear up pretty proper. >_>

Aeris's death is even SADDER, but I already knew about it when it happened...thusly destroying the emotional feel of the game.

Why didn't you have it with her? XP I had it with Aeris the first time, but the second time I did it with Yuffie, lol. ...I like the Yuffie one. Someday I'll have to go back, though, and do the Barrett one. XD

Ok.
I got a theory on this one. Listen up if you will.

1997. Playstation game Final Fantasy 7.

How old were you when that game came out/was released?

Now think, how old were these idiot kids when it came out?

They were probably WAY too young to be able to fully enjoy the game. It could have very well been their first 45+ hour game, first RPG, first Final Fantasy.

OF COURSE they would have gotten mad at the thought of their ONLY healing character (with like base Cure spells/Curing HP+status Limit breaks, "OMG that does everything!") dying because they were too much of n00bs to have other means of healing.

Go check out their memory cards saves (just for laughs) for their items, materia growth/spells learned on what characters, and general lack of anything needed to OWN that game!

A recent example I witnessed.
(NO underwater breathing materia, but you're trying to take a chance at Emerald Weapon w/ only a 1 time use Bahamut basic-not even close to a almost required knights of the round/mimic/quadra/etc.
Then you ask me if I beat the boss before. YES. How? I don't remember exactly the answer- to what stupid question you're asking me which is irrelevant to beating the boss, it was a long time ago, but I wasn't using crap items like you are right now! Kids!)

They might have EVEN quit after Aeris, their only healing character, died. "OMG Sephiroth is soo cool bcuz his long white/grey hair OMG, but he sucks cuz he killed Aeris, lol, but you can bring her back w/Gameshark...blah blah blah"

When Aeris died it wasn't a big deal to my GAMEPLAY. I was strong enough to OWN everything after that regardless. Picking up Aeris' final LV Limit Break some time later was just an afterthought. It would have been short lived with only a few hours use on her, if I got it before her untimely demise.

It was a sad scene though at the time.
Yuffie date owned.
Tifa was okay.
Hehe Barett? I don't wanna think about that. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

-Off topic.
Fave FF7 memories.
OWNing Gold Saucer battle mode with Cloud equipped with all the items I needed to reduce stat ailments, and hitting all the right jackpot turns to make the most of my run to the end. Then cashing in all the battle points!

Learning the steps and timing in the parade of the gun city pier thingy(I have forgotten the name, sorry.) for major Audience TV popularity % when I was Cloud in the soldier outfit, thus getting me nice items handed to me from the guy the group was supposed to be following for sake of the storyline. Good work soldier! or something like that. It took alot of retrying after messing up the % with out of sequence marching, then surreal when I got it down perfect with no mistakes.

Here is how it went for me.

*Aries dies*

Me: Oh shit, now who am I gonna use to cast useless limits ;_;

I didn't cry when bambi's mother died, I didn't cry when shadow was stuck in the mud hole (Homeward Bound), and I sure as hell didn't cry when the most useless member of my team died (excluding barett).

Cait Sith's sacrifice was really emotional...until5 seconds after it happens Cait Sith 2 comes along. I wish they had waited a couple of scenes to do that.

Areis death was sad, and some people probably get wound up about it seeing as for most of the first part of the game she was the love interest. Having the love interest get killed off like that is quite a shock...unless youve seen countless threads like this ruining the surprise. And general Leo dies? Argh, there goes another death that wont have the shock tactic when i finally get to it.

Eesh... I'm sorry, man. I just figured everybody knew about that. Really sorry.

But uh... about Aeris being the healer... what!? No character in Final Fantasy VII and up (Barring FFIX) is any different from any other. I mean, sure, there are some differences, but most of them come in with Limit Breaks or Overdrives or whatever else you wanna call them. Whoever had all your healing materia was the healer, and that was that. I never used Aeris, so it's not like I lost an important character.

I'm really not a fan of the cookie-cutter character concept that was introduced in FFVII. I prefer my characters to have real significant differences between them.

Dont worry about, ive still really got to get back into the game, i just cant seem to find my PSONE Memory cards after moving from halls of residence.

*Update: My memory cards actually got wiped and all my FF6 saves were deleated, nooooooooooooo!*

The healer thing you mention kinda makes sense. I dont think i had any problems healing characters after Aries death. I think i actually gave Tifa most of the healing materia and survived that way.

Yes. KIDS playing FF7 will automatically feel that Aeris is the HEALER. Just due to being new to RPGs and seeing a girl character with rods and healing Limit Breaks.

Why would they bother giving Cloud(or anyone else), their uber l337 character, healing spells from materia?

Thus they level up maybe ONE healing materia on Aeris and get all pissed when she dies.

They do start out with general preferences towards Power/Attack, HP/MP, etc. You learn later this is bull, like you said Outrider, other than Limit break geared specifically towards overkills/max damage per turns.

Outrider, you must have misunderstood my ranting post there. I agree with what you say on this topic, and quite a few others as well. Sorry for any confusion.

well, i guess she is alive again XP. I always wondered how even after being stabbed and shot to death by numerous enemies a simple phoenix down did the trick, but that when the cut scenes come across everyone forgot the phoenix downs at the house. As for Aeris, I must admit it is the only time I was saddened by a video game. FF7 at the time was one of the only games to carry so much emotion, which I think is why it was rated so highly (at least in my eyes)

What made Aeris' death so special is that it was completely unexpected, aside from combining the pretty music to build a tragic, sad but somehow rememberable moment, when playing a RPG like Final Fantasy VII which made you really get in touch with the characters.

People care when Film/TV/Book/Comic characters die, and its the same thing with computer games. People get emotionally attached to characters in a story based game and loosing them can be upsetting at times. Aries was the first love interest of Final Fantasy 7 and seeing her get cut down in a brutal way can invoke an emotional response in a player. People may give the same response when a character in a movie dies. Toejam dying in a level is different as you know that you either have some extra lives spare or you can restart at a different section. Aries died and that was it (unless you used a cheat card, which isnt really bringing the character back but putting the player model back into the game).

Empathy is a strong measure for mankind. It's why we keep animals as pets - controlled emotions in a controlled circumstance. You take feed them, you train them, you shelter them, but do they truly have any substantial effect on your reality? Then why is there good excuse for people to cry or be saddened when their pet dies? Sympathy is envoked for the sake of empathy. It's just one of those things condive to mankind and other seemingly sentient creatures (Koko and her kitten, anyone?).

Stories as involving and contived as FF7's envoke emotions within those who have enough will to empathize. I would say it's more normal for people to be saddened by stories in which such events occur... where does this place you?
