Yes... yes you can.

Oh, and here's how it works.

Fighter = tank
Black Belt = Physical damage dealer, bit of slow growth, but good near the end. Don't equip them with weapons... no armor too, I believe.
Thief = Haven't played this one much, although Ninja does get some Black magic, it probably can't put much of it to good use outside of boosting spells.
Red Mage = All too familiar jack of all trades, master of none. Versatile in the beginning, but levels off. Can use a good number of the hand-me-down equipment from the fighter.
Black Mage = Area damage dealer, and physical character booster. Spells that single kill aren't of much particular use to my knowledge. Masamune + Sabr (Can't remember if that's the abbreviation)
White Mage = Essential member to most parties, healing magic, Nul magic, undead area spell magic. Exit.

For a fairly solid/good party...

Fighter (if you need a tank early on) or Black Belt
Black Belt
Black Mage or Red Mage or Thief (Ninja can use lower boosting spells)
White Mage

Of course, with Dawn of Souls, you can just throw all this out the window, and any group with a Fighter and White Mage will have no trouble clearing the game at all. FF1 in Dawn of Souls is really easy :/

Of course, I don't really see what is accomplished by this "Red Mage War", I mean, oh no, someone used a red mage! Who gives a shit?
