Why is my 56K so horrible?

It connects at 31, 2000 bps. Isnt that horrible? What could be wrong with it?

Hablah, don't feel bad...my 56K connects at a maximum speed of 28K, meaning there is no chance in hell of it ever being faster than that. Aaa, that's just cause the phone lines around here are ancient and don't suppoert data transfer faster than 28K. Hence, my cable service is downstream only. All my upstream uses a 28K modem thingy...

Most likely it's not your modem, it's your phone lines. Older phone lines cannot connect as fast.

fastest I ever connected with my 56k was like 52k. and that was ONCE. 56k is just horrible compared to what is out there now.
