Okay...

So I got this new harddrive, a Maxtor DiamondMax 10, 120 GB. I managed to partition it without too much trouble. But then.. I tried to format the disk, in Windows XP, but at about 60% the pc suddenly gets really slow for no reason, and at 65% the mouse doesn't move anymore, and it just sort of... stops.
512 MB Ram, and not really any significant programs running either.

Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong?

Please help VioletSkye. ;___;

grab a copy of dos and use fdisk.

you don't need fdisk with XP since XP has the ability to format and partition the drive built-in. I suggest reinserting the disk and then within XP delete the partition and let WinXP do a clean reformat of the drive. It should then continue with the install without problems.

Windows will ask you if you would like to install Windows XP on an existing partition or remove them and repartition the hard disk. Some prefer to install on existing partition but I prefer to remove them all and repartition (since I do a lot of dual boot systems.) If you choose to install Windows XP on an existing partition, Setup is going to ask you whether you want to leave the partition alone or reformat it. You should choose to reformat the partition. If not, the setup program leaves behind the kind of leftover files you want to get rid of.

I also highly recommend that you format the drive by using the NTFS file system (which is faster and more efficient as well as more secure than fat 32.)
