View Full Version : Japan doesn't make you smarter!

Just to let you know.

Although Japanese Culture, both modern and ancient, is interesting to read, just obsessing over it all and thinking that those that do not follow the same path are ingorant is extremely wrong. It's ok to have a hobby, don't get me wrong, but there are many other hobbies out there, let those that have other interests have those interests.

I'm just sick of being looked down upon because my skin is white, I speak one language, and I learn about the visual aspects of humanity (art), not the spoken aspects (language).

That's prejudice, stop it please.

I would suggest learning more than one language, as a writer.

As a half-Korean, I do not suggest learning Japanese (I kid, I kid).

Eh... they'll get what's coming to them eventually. No one culture/society/human being is any better than another.

But you don't speak Korean. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif Shame on your, Sollypoo.

The funnier thing is, most people who think that way also like to take pride of the fact that they speak 4 Japanese words and that makes them better.

Or. All of a sudden, they go worship Japanese people.
Like Asian people used to worship caucasians. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_eek.gif

Indeed.

Japan has a strict school system where students must learn hundreds(up to thousands, I think)of kanji. If you didn't already know, now you do.

Learning Japanese words from video games/anime etc. doesn't make you better than anyone else, or even more Japanese. Take classes if you are THAT interested.

"I'm turning Japanese, I really think so!" Uhm no. http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

I agree with you there, Skorp. Playing PSO, Maple Shitty (Maple Story), And GuninyourButt (Gunbound), you see tons of these idiots that think they know Japanese.

Yup.

I wonder if they're as amused when I butcher their language at them as I am when I run across the ones that butcher mine at me.

Then again, some of them speak English better than native speakers, and spell it better to boot. XP

And I find it amusing how it's cool to hate everything Japanese now. Hey, you hate everything Japanese? Quit fucking playing PSO and coming to this site. No more Final Fantasy for you! Back to EA and Activision and all our favourite loathed American companies that everyone bitches about! ;-P No more sushi lunches, no more karaoke, no more practicing karate, none of that. Oh, and no more DDR either! No more Speed Racer for you! No Katamari Damacy or however the fuck it's spelled. No more Street Fighter or Megaman or King of Fighters! It's Japanese, it's shit, forget it ever existed, right? 9_9

Jumping on the 'Something is popular right now, let's hate it because of that' bandwagon is as fucking lame as the otaku dumbfucks who do nothing but sit in their garage kit-filled rooms bittorrenting Naruto episodes and jerking off to incestuous pedophilic cartoon porn.

If the current rage were Inuit throat singing, it would be cool to hate Inuit throat singing. (And it's really a pity that it isn't, because throat singing is AWESOME.)

Yawn.

Anyway, not as if Korea doesn't get invaded every few milennia. I can forgive the Japanese for this *one* transgression. Besides, Hondas are sexy beasts (except for the new ones... what were they thinking?).

Nah, I've been hating anime fans since '98 or so :3

That was when I first encountered pudgy white girls who pranced around screaming Sailor Moon transformations in Japanese, having memorized the entire things despite not having any fucking clue of what it actually meant.

Though I managed to stop hating anime itself; sometimes it's difficult to separate the thing that people obsess over from the people who obsess over it themselves.

It's still not my cup of tea, but it doesn't immediately make me want to vomit any more. That's progress!

Funny coming from a man that dislikes Fan Fictions.

Fan fics are one step away from true writing, the highest art if-I-do-say-so-myself (gets mauled to death by piccilators).

I'm also pretty sure that the Japanese don't mind the idolatry, as long as they get some sweet cash out of it.

Indeed.
Just think about how much DBZ by itself has made?!
...also factor in how much of that was made after the entire series ended!(and it reached all the 13 year olds in America years later)

I'm not one to talk though. I did know about the series ending back in 1997 ish and followed the cartoon, but still own like 7 DBZ t-shirts, countless toys, etc. I don't wear the shirts much anymore since I'm branded a super n00b/nerd by anyone who sees it. One person who I would never have expected to like the cartoon asked me where I got a shirt from though. That was cool.

I try to keep up with Japanese culture through news reports, (game)magazines, etc. It's not all that hard to do and I might know more than some average n00bie teen, but do not ever throw it in someone's face that I'm better than them for it. How sad is it that some people would?

Since I'm part Japanese, is someone gonna look up to me now?!

No way.

kinda funny, this brings back memories from when I was a kid.

me and my friends would play cowboys and indians a lot, soon it became too baby-ish for us so we moved onto playing Samurai and Ninjas.

That year a Japanese family moved in and the two kids they had were quite nice, though they loved the Cowboys and Indians idea because to them Samurai and Ninjas was too baby-ish http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

Dinosaur Task Force Zyuranger! (http://rovang.org/sentai/zyuranger.htm)

A few summers ago I actually rented some Power Rangers tapes, since I had tons of free rentals. I never noticed when I was younger, but the difference between the Zyuranger footage and the stuff about tacky teenagers learning valuable life lessons is extremely noticable. Even aside from the obvious dubbing, the recording quality takes a sudden dip.

Note that the original storyline was more interesting, involving the selling of souls to Great Satan. And the yellow ranger was initially a guy.

I didn't know what a Power Ranger was when I was like 10 years old, let alone Ultraman which was being played on a US SNES with a Japanese Super Famicom adapter! They had all the colors of power Rangers along with a lot of those Masked Rider bug looking guys...but those were in the youngest kid's room. -_-

Yeah. What was this about again?

It's not just Japanese but Asian culture in general. What irritates me mostly is that this is mostly a fad that has sprouted up in the pop community the last couple of years.

I know the thread starter is referring mostly to the gaming community, but I see this in American society as a whole.

A Nike commercial recently aired with Lebron James glorifying Chinese women and culture even though Lebron doesn't have a hint of Asian blood in him. I just think it's kind of ignorant to have something like that when you have a guy like Yao Ming that just recently came into the league. Especially since the Chinese government banned the commercial in their homeland.

And don't get me started about Kanji or Chinese writing tattoos that many non-Asian individuals are popularizing.

Well further fun can be had when you say:
"I am asian girl, impress me!"

But that may be much more harassment than simple 3 PM's. I don't know from experience though. -_-

Heh. Yeah the power ranger color thing was pretty bad. Regardless the fighting footage was all made with Japanese actors, hence the over-acted arm movements and constant "jumping forward when giant explosions happen" thingy. The colors and American kid things(High School ice cream social anyone?) was spliced in with that footage. Thus the cash cow was born.

What are they on, pray tell, now? Last I dared look: Super Ninja Time Dinosaur Force Rangers is it?
