This attitude seems rather misguided. There are dozens of ways to show your love, but let's consider that making it special requires that circumstances be altered, and this generally requires purchasing special decorations, going to special restaraunts, sometimes even going to special places. No matter what your plans are, it's nearly impossible to end up spending more money than you would normally spend, just to make it special. You do this on one day a year for two reasons:

You can't afford to do it every day.
If you did it every day, it wouldn't be special, anymore. It'd be every day.


So what we have here, is a situation in which people are generally wanting to spend more money. Businesses therefore begin advertising more heavily, and offering holiday-oriented sales. More business will be occuring, so they want to bring more attention to themselves. Consumers want the Businesses' services, and and the Businesses want the Consumers' money. This is the basic foundation that Economic Systems are built upon. To rebuke someone for taking advantage of this simple principle is nothing short of chastizing people for contributing to the continued flow of our Economy-- which indeed, it is good for all of us for money to move quickly.

So yes, businesses make money on holidays, but in turn, consumers take advantage of a prompt to do something special. I really don't see that there's anything wrong with that. There is no dishonest exchange occuring, and in truth, many things go on sale during the holidays, and therefore cost less. It seems to be a win-win situation, to me.
