Can you believe this crap? I had to buy a third Dreamcast console today. I've been sitting here for 2 days offline. You wanna know WHY I had to get a new one?
Dreamcast #1: Lasted 2-3 years. Disc-spin motor finally kicked the bucket 2 days ago.
Dreamcast #2: Seems to not even work properly anymore, cuts off video signal as soon as the disc get read. So... it's basically screwed when it can't even stay on for 10 seconds. (I guess leaving it to sit and rot for about half a year didn't help...)
Some other Dreamcast relating things I burnt out...
Keyboard #1: ... I spilt water on it.
Modem #1: I don't know wtf happened it would give screwed up signals and not read correctly. I'm led to believe it was surged by lightning while I was sleeping.
So... Hi all... again.

Were you nice to your Dreamcast? Or were your just abusive?

Heh if DC's are still around and running $50 a pop then you could've bought a GC for the price of three brand new DC's. Thus readying yourself for the GC's PSO if you don't have GC already. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

*Owns ALL next gen systems, so he already had a GC*
No, I never dropped my DCs or anything. But since I use my dreamcast around at least 3 hours a day, EVERY day for the internet, you would expect the thing to stop spinning one of these days, and well... it was that day.

Why would you buy 7 Dreamcasts? After the 2nd one broke I would say screw it.

v2 and its stupid data layout making the laser head going back and forth for every char being loaded sure didn't help.
The more I think about it, the more I'm sure v2 wasn't done by the same staff as v1.

i've got the same dreamcast and i haven't had any problems and my roommate's had his since it came out and no problems. i think we've got a case of emotionally abused dc's. y'know maybe if you'd respond to it, it'd respond to you the next time you put in a disc. don't hate the dc, love the dc.

I'm on my forth and its dying now too.. The drive is starting to break down.. the music stops, sometimes the textures of Forest or Mines were missing, sometimes I battle with everyone else having no skin. Or 10 mins to get just the bootdisc to load.. =
Once I stood in the guild for ages waiting to load while the DC went nuts, then when I was forced to quit (soft reset) it couldn't even load the save screen.
I care for my Dreamcast the same way I care for my computer, and it's been working ever since I got it (Christmas 1999).
For starters, be careful when moving it; bumps, shakes, and jolts can knock something loose if done enough times or hard enough.
Keep it well ventilated. As long as you set the Dreamcast on a hard surface, and in a area that doesn't block any air vents, it should be fine.
Don't move it while it's turned on. That's a no-brainer. Could possibly damage/ware the CD/GD spin mechanisim.
Clean your games regularly. Don't wait for something to happen before deciding they need cleaning. Just take a dry cloth and wipe the data side of the GD-ROM starting from the center, and wiping in one stroke straight out to the edge of it, switch parts of the cloth/cloths and do the same to a different part of the GD. (Okay, that's got nothing to do with Dreamcast maintenance...)
Keep the Dreamcast's lens clean. If that thing gets scratched you can order a replacement or get it repaired by Sega (I think). Your best bet is to keep it clean using a can of compressed air. DO NOT touch the lens with ANY type of object/cloth or cleaning solvent (shouldn't use liquids on electronics anyway), doing so will only make it worse.
The only really different thing between maintaining a Dreamcast and a PC is opening up the PC, after which you would thuroughly remove any dust/dirt/whatnot via compressed air.
Never open a console or computer on your own, kiddies, unless you absolutely know what you're doing or have (experienced) adult supervision. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

For almost three years my DC was intact... until some days ago when the modem was hit by a lightning. Since then I've bee waiting for a new modem, which a friend of mine wanted to give it to me for free. He said he sended it perfectly but it hasn't arrived yet. Damn mail system...
I'm on my 5th. I treat it like my other consoles, which I've never had a problem with. The Dreamcasts however...they simply don't like me.

For all the problems, you may as well buy one at a used/sell/trade video game store...which is where I bought mine..along with all the accessories. I got a used keyboard at the same spot..looked brand new for $15!!!! I really don't buy my video game stuff new anymore. Used stuff is just as good and I have never had problems with them. The only thing that I had bought new was my PS2 games.

Yeh what WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW said. Since my first DC I've treated all mine good. Like I prop them on the cardboard cushion they come with, so its surrounded by air n everything.
Heck my many MegaDrives (I dunno, they breed I think) all work. Game Gears work, Saturn.. the whole lot. But DC's are just fussy little bltches.
Always buy extended warranty http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

Woot it won't be a matter of time before my dreamcast gives me the finger.Once I lose this system it's no more internet for me.But don't tell my mommy,if my dreamcast burns and I tell her she'll cancel my isp account forever! If it burns out before the GC version of pso then im gonna have to stall and not bring up anything about going online.
My dreamcast is already making loading nosies at random(it starts loading for no reason then gets quite...VERY quite)I hope it lasts forever but who am I to tell? This is my 3rd dreamcast!
