I feel depressed since I joined PSOW. I try to help and reason with people but it always leads me into arguements. I don't know what I am doing wrong.

You seem to be caring what The Internet thinks of you, and that's a pretty big problem right there.=/

I guess you're right.

Well...ok, I guess you should care about what others think of you, but if they can't find you to be a nice person, THEN you probably shouldn't care what they think in the first place.

That's the problem, I care about everyone but on the other hand your advice may be correct.

You shouldn't take yourself so seriously online as much as you usually might in real life. First and foremost, on a gaming forum, you will run into a plethora of different age groups. That being said, how often do you see a 25 year-old person arguing with a 13 year-old over why x object is better than y object? Chances are that you answered never. This brings me to a second point: communicating an idea over the phone can be alot more difficult than communicating that same idea face-to-face. When over the phone, you lose the use of visual aids, leaving you only with audio communication. On the internet, you go a step further and use only letters and numbers to communicate. Yes, visual and audio aids are available from time to time, but not very often. Spoting things such as sarcasm becomes a chore. As such, it is much easier to accidentlly offend someone over the internet than it is over the phone or face-to-face.

That brings me to yet another point of discussion. When on the phone, it is much easier to blow a gasket and cuss someone out without such a large fear of retaliation as if you were face-to-face saying the same things (punching someone in the face cannot be done over the phone now can it?). Similarly, you cannot punch someone in the face over the internet when they have offended you. As such, a 100-lb 5-ft high 13 year-old will have little to no hesitation when it comes to talking smack back to a 200-lb 6-ft high 25 year-old.

Couple these few things together. You have intelligence levels ranging from "I dwess myself" to "time to feed my kids again, but only after I cash my paycheck... which reminds me, I need to do my taxes." Something is bound to get lost in the translation. Of special importance is what you get when you couple my second point together with my third point. It's easy to offend someone online, just as it's easy for someone who has been accidently offended to retaliate back with extreme measures. Anger now becomes amazingly common ground. The interweb is an angry, dangerous hell hole. Simple as that.

SO what exactly should one do to protect him or herself? Simple, wear flame-proof clothing while strolling through hell. Don't let what people say on a forum get to you as much as they might have in real life. Cheer up, not all is lost. Some people will come along eventually who actually listen to your advice in an educated manner. That's when you know it's safe to come out play.

EDIT: A quick note. The use of ages in my examples does not imply that a 25 year-old is in anyway smarter than a 13 year-old. Take the ages as more of a measuring device of mind-set, not actual age. It's my belief that most of the fighting on this forum occurs when a 13 year-old kid with an 8 year-old mindset argues against a 17 year-old kid with a matching 17 year-old mindset. Tis all that was meant my the use of ages.

Another thing is that online hardly anybody pretends to give a shit about what you think http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

This applies to everyone.

Dude, seriously, thank you. It's moments like these that remind me why I keep coming back to FKL.

Not sure how much that will help with depression... but if you have fun with it... well then that can't be too bad.
