"Otaku" has a really negative connotation in Japanese. It means something like "obsessed fanatic." You can be a car otaku or a gun otaku, too, but it's most commonly associated with anime.

For some reason (probably because Americans love bastardizing everything desu yo ne nyao ^__^), people in the US proudly proclaim themselves as otaku, even if they've only seen Akira or something.

Also, otaku tend to do things like this (http://www.cosplayhell.com)...

Want me to talk about Otakus? Fine, I hate 'em. Not like X13 hates newbies, I just don't like how die-hard they are. Sure, I like anime, but I'm not some freak who watches Japan only stuff or complain all the time that America "waters down" the content, which the americna censors do somwhat, but at least I can live with it.

Now, when it comes to videogame, I don't care how die-hard people are for Japan stuff. In fact, I wished we had more American consoles to compete. (kinda surprising I didn't get Xbox)
