What the fuck is everyones moronic obsession with this stupid word?
On xbox live, you join a game, "sup".
How the hell is anyone supposed to respond to that?
Honestly, why do people say this, it's almost impossible to respond to without feeling like an idiot.
Ugh, sorry for the stupid rant but this is really bugging the hell out of me.

...Hey? Hi? Yo!

Seriously, it's a greeting. Greet them back.

It's just the fact that it's a shortend "what's up?" which isn't really a greeting.
No matter what it is though, it just makes me fell hella awkward.

Don't worry, SJ, it's the debased form of English known as "gruntish" or "chavese". Learn to answer it with a simple "meh" or something that sounds like a grunt when you say it out loud.

What's Up = How are things going/Whats happening with you at the minute.

Seems like a nice greeting to me, maybe could use a 'Hi' in front of it, but it seems to do the job.

Its just a casual form of talking. You would probably think they were a total ass if they suddenly came in and said 'Greetings sir, and how are you today?'.

Definately not Chav-ish, all you normally get from them is that horrible nasal 'Awwwe' noise.

"Nothing much."

Really. It's not that difficult to form up a response.

I prefer to ask "Whar's poppin'?" anyways.

Whar? Really?

I usually just got with "Yo." or "y halo thar".

Well, I don't see why. It's a word equivalent to "hi", "hey", "yo". But if it makes you awkward, answer back the same word.

Normally they don't expect you to immediatly reply "NOFN", it's just a free polite greeting, kinda guetto-style.

hm... I thought I was the only person who despised that "greeting"... When someone greets me with "sup" on PSO... I dont know... I feel a strange urge to leave right at that instant... It gets under my skin in ways that it probably shouldn't... Perhaps this is because when the term first surfaced, it put me in one or two awkward middle-school situations... But even when I first heard the word, I thought it to be very ... stupid, unsettling, annoying, imposing... =| How is it that a simple slang greeting can be so offensive? I have no idea... It just is...

knock it off. you aren't "cool"

..."per."

that's the response to "'sup."

just like the response to "shhhh" is "it."

you're welcome.

sup!

I use that.
A lot. Mainly because I am lazy.
I can be lazy if I want to. Not like marks are being taken off or anything.

I hate "sup" as well. In fact, you might say it's my pet peeve.

I don't necessarily hate people who say sup, or even think less of them, but the word itself annoys me to no end for the reasons Rurouni outlined.

But I'd rather hear a hundred sups all going off at once than a single "WHAAAZZAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!" Luckily, that one seems to have died off completely.

I kind of get annoyed at the responses of "Sup?" and "What's up?" rather than the actual questions themselves. When people say "The sky!" or "The ceiling!" it kind of bugs me, I guess it's a pet peeve of mine. But that's what you get when you toy with things that could be taken as literal or figurative, even when people know what you're trying to ask. =P

I can't begin to tell you how much I disdain the usage of such words. Especially these two overused and annoying to see ones- 'teh' and 'pwn'. Those just make me see that modern education has failed us yet again.

You hear "Sup" and you do a short rap dance? http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

Heh, but seriously. Hearing that DOES make you feel like you're in an ok environment. And no harm normally comes from it, so.

I always thought those 'words' were used in an Ironic sense now.

I hope you weren't infering that speaking slang must mean you write slang.

That'd be a http://pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_nono.gif .

Quoted for agreement.

Plus, I fail to see any evidence that using slang implies stupidity or ignorance. And don't forget that slang has always been a part of our language--both spoken and written. Only those who are uninformed in such matters believe that a) slang is a sign of modern linguistic decay and b) our predecessors spoke a "purer" or more "proper" form of English (or any other language).
